Hmm, he didn't say when they expect to finish installing things.

Well I hope they do. Because it might put some pressure on OTW to keep the HD channels coming. Unfortunately since DirecTV is not an option for the vast majority of Honolulu's viewers we have no choice. Is it still true that Hawaii has the lowest Satellite/highest cable penetration in the entire US? That is what I remember reading a while back. I think Satellite was under 5%?

Is is possible to wire a Condo for Satellite if enough customers could be signed up?

Brad,
In most cases it is possible to get a 'central' dish installed. If you go to oahudish (dot) com and click on satellite news you will see a link to the FCC ruling, click on that and it will take you to the PDF file, the items that will interest you the most are the Q and A items geared towards condos. Weve set up quite a few central dishes in the state. As far as everyone else 'stepping' up their game to compete with DTV's HD line-up this probably will not be possible for quite sometime. At last count its something like OTW 16 to 20 HD channels available and Disnetwork (Hawaii) 20-24 HD (3 dishes).
And DTV Hawaii/Mainland 70+ HD

Other than the physical requirements (viable location for the dish, etc.... nothing to do with the FCC), it's entirely in the hands of the 'Owners Association' and how they vote. Anyone who thinks that -that- isn't a hurdle hasn't tried it.

And to be fair, out of the the latest DirecTV HD channel announcement,

FXHD 248
HGTV 229-1
FSN WEST HD 652
FSN SOUTHWEST 643
Speedhd 607
Fuelhd 612
Fsn Primetickethd 653
Cartoonhd 296

only FX, HGTV and Cartoon have HD content. The rest should really be called 'HD-Ready' since the programming is exactly the same as the SD channel. Speed channel, for instance, has announced they will have HD content in the first quarter 2008. I'm sure there will be occasional HD programming here and there, but nothing like you'd think from the announcement.

Has anyone noticed HCMAX that just came on the OTW lineup? An HD movie channel?

Erika Engle's article the other day about DirecTV mentioned that Oceanic plans to expand to 30 HD channels by the end of the year and up to 50 next year. I guess they started w/ Cinemax.

Agreed,
Very difficult to hammer out an agreement with associations/owners. And very difficult to get an agreement on something such as a right of entry or programming card, or dish placement. But our crack negotiation team has been if anything, consistent there.
Yes havent had time to verify content, however today watched nascar on channel 607, programming not in HD.

The installation of a good high-quality, reliable HD broadcast server is very expensive and complicated. The entire transmission chain for HDtv is complicated beyond your wildest imagination.

Is the only KGMB OTA game (Pats/Dolphins) in SD today?

hm... they just switched to the Baltimore game and that too, is in SD.

Way to go, CBS. Why not show it in B/W while you're at it?

I'd be interested in the equipment used in the satellite downlink segment if it's o.k. to post that, Kawika. I'd also like to know when the new site above Ulupalakua will start broadcasting in HD (?).

Mahalo,

The NE/MIA game on KGMB-HD off DISH Net has been alternating between HD and SD but only SD since the switch to Baltimore (and now TEN/HOU), fwiw.

Being on the West side of the Big Island, I'd also be interested in learning what the plans are for digital broadcasting from the new antennae site on Maui's Ulupalakua ranch. Are there towers up there, yet? Will they start broadcasting DT before 2009?

FYI to everyone, looks like the VOOM programming on 129 popped up early this morning for Hawaii at about 2-3:00a.
official verification has not been given yet. But looks like Dish will be offering this package soon. (Bronze, Silver Gold HD) packages for Hawaii should follow suit

The tower is up and the antenna should be stacked by now. They should be on the air very soon I would think.
Their plans for DT are what we'd both like to know.

I'd appreciate hearing when it -is- 'official'.

Thanks,

is that only the tower for KGMV-DT/CBS or do all major stations (PBS, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) have towers up? When they start broadcasting digitally from Maui I'll see if I can pick up the signal from the Big Island... it should be a good test.

It's been 9 or 10 months since I've been up there, but as I was told, all the stations are going to be on one tower/antenna using a combiner. They were building the massive foundation for the self-supporting 199 ft. tower when I was there...lots of concrete.
Again, I don't know what any of their -DT- plans are, which is why I was hoping Kawika could give us some insight.
If it wasn't an hour of 4W drive and locked gates, I'd run up there and ask them myself.
I've been holding off on putting up the 10 ft. Radio Shack antenna I have thinking I was going to move. Looks like it's time to get it up and see what's -really- going on. I'll also poke around on the FCC's site and see if I can find any Construction Permits.

Well, the FCC search wasn't very fruitful.
The DT 'Construction Permits' are all for ~3000 meters AMSL (Antenna Height Above Mean Sea Level) which is Haleakala. The 'Applications' for ~1400 meters AMSL are all NTSC TV except there is -one DT- for KOGG (KHNL-KFVE).
Not very promising, but who knows what's really going on.

I did a search at the FCC recently for the Maui broadcasters and it's all kind of perplexing. It almost looks like all stations except for KOGG are moving the NTSC (analog) broadcasts to Ulupalakua. It is possible that that is what will happen and then they plan to flash-cut from analog to digital in 2009. Maybe because they have to get out of Haleakala to stop interfering with the telescope. That's one hefty task, though.

Let us know if you pick anything up when you put up your antenna. I don't have a digital TV tuner at the moment. I suspect you'll get nothing, though, because once a station goes on the air, the FCC database says it's "Licensed" and all the Ulupalakua ones are still at "Application" status.

I just got off the phone with Rick Blangiardi, president of KGMB. I had sent a complaint to programming@kgmb9.com, and he actually was the one who responded.

I asked that they make their HD feed available to OTW and he gave the usual excuses about how they want compensation, etc., since OTW is charging extra for the channel. I stressed that OTW doesn't really do that, since they send the local networks "in-the-clear" (do they still? I haven't tried this in a few months) and HD Pak is only for cable channels like espn and hdnet.

Rick does seem like a nice guy and is a big football fan, so maybe they can work something out, but I wouldn't hold my breath people.

He did mention that KGMB-HD will probably be available on the phone company's tv service, when that becomes available, and that it's available on dish network and directv.

Really? Wow. 'Cause they're still not doing all primetime/late night in HD over-the-air. More like one, maybe two shows, if anything. At least those providers will be ready when KGMB is. Like Oceanic and KHON, huh.
