Just as an FYI for OTA viewers:

I managed to get OTA KGMB (5.1) and KHNL (13.1) in Mililani. The channels were not previously available.

Apparently KFVE was taken down yesterday; I thought it was a bad sign, but when I scanned my TV today, I suddenly discovered that I managed to gain that and BOTH KGMB and KHNL back.

I'm glad especially since I haven't had KHNL for months... so yeah, scan your TVs!

Not only do I also see KGMB and KHNL at those OTA Stations, but the Signal Strength is fantastic - With DISH OTA I'm seeing 100% from Central Oahu.

Thanks for the quick heads up!

Yup It's been 10 months I guess, but now I can get KHNL again. Though I guess everyone on that station has since been fired.

It seems possible now that DirecTV's next satellite, D12, will launch at the end of this year. A reference to a launch schedule was posted on dbstalk.com.

From the Oceanic website:

"Within the next 30 days we will add the following HD Channels: MLB, Fox News, ABC Family, Disney XD, Speed, MSNBC, QVC and Weather Channel. Within the next 60 days we will add the following HD Channels: History International, Biography, E!, Style, G4 Tech TV, BBC America and ESPNU."

It looks like those HD channels (MLB, Fox News, ABC Family, Disney XD, Speed, MSNBC, QVC and Weather Channel) were added today. Or maybe it is just a test.

Yea, Got the programming data on the TIVO last night. The channels were not active yet though. Usually the programming data shows up a day before Oceanic flips the switch. I'm expecting it to be on by the time I get home from work today!

Anyword on the new samsung HDVRs?
When I scan my channels the data says it is KGMV 9.1 but it actually is KGMB 5.1 (KFVE 5). Can anyone point me to information on how to fix this? 5.1 does not seem to carry prime time CBS shows.

Thx
Joe

I actually received a call back from the engineering department today. They said at the end of the month KGMB programming will be found on 13.2 here on Maui.

I've using SD tivo for some time and was looking into switch to HD and tivo HD units. Has the problems with TWC cablecards been cleared up?

I just got my dish installed and I couldn't be happier with all of the stations I am getting. However khon and kitv doesn't seem to be in HD. Has anyone else come across this problem? I am getting sd just fine but would much rather watch the programing in HD. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Happy new years!

You may be getting the SD duplicate of your channels. Check you set up menu for display setting and select "hide SD duplicates".

That way only the hd version of a given channel will show on your guide, and when you select that channle you will be tuned to the HD version.

As MauiGuy says, you might have a wrong Setup setting that suppresses HD channels rather than SD channels (since on DirecTV SD and corresponding HD channels have the same channel numbers). For KHON, you might be getting HD and not notice it, because it does not seem to have much programming in widescreen and real HD resolution. But KITV has lots of real HD, so something is wrong with your setup if you're not seeing HD on KITV.

Thanks guys for your quick and informative responses. I just check the setup and it has already been set to filter out the sd and only show hd programing. i just tuned to ellen on KITV and its sd so I guess my signal strength is no up high enough. I think i'll fiddle around some more. Thanks again.

Low signal strength would not explain getting SD in place of HD. If you're set up right to get HD and signal strength is too low for some reason, you just won't get any picture at all. It's reasonable to guess that the system might be intelligent enough to substitute SD if HD is not possible for some reason, but, actually, it's not that intelligent. No HD, no nothing.

Did you get this fixed? I'm also having the same problem...getting audio only for KHON.

Thinking about bringing a laptop and a USB ATSC tuner along on our trip to the Big Island next month. The only thing I'm interested in is the Super Bowl; I want to sit on the lanai with the game on the laptop.

I know where we're staying has a clear view of Haleakala (clouds permitting), where I believe the TV transmitters are. What are my chances of getting the game? We're staying at a resort on the Kohala coast.

Yeah, upgrading the TV's firmware fixed the problem.

Anyone else having a problem with the interactive TV guide? I have a SA 8300HD and I've been trying to schedule recording a program on Tuesday, but when I go to that date it says "No Data Available". It's been saying that since last week. There's no other way to schedule to record is there?

Anybody having issues tuning in KHON Fox HD on 85-3?

I recently got the super basic cable, and I can get all the other local channels with my HD tuner, but I can't find Fox.

I get a digital signal on 117-3, but it's not HD (unless there's some other issue over at KHON today).

Thanks!

--UPDATE--

Ok, found it - 46-3 for me. HD football - yay!
The SA 8300HD sometimes doesn't update its online guide completely. Try rebooting:
simultaneously press Vol+, Vol-, Info on the front of the box.
I have to do this at least weekly. One conjecture is that is may be busy viewing/recording when it meant to do an update. (I have seen a message to the effect that "you have 2 active shows and I can't get program data," when looking at the program guide.)

I have bad news for you, first all of the stations no longer transmit on Haleakala..the state and feds forced them off as part of the DTV switchover. The stations on Maui now transmits from a mountain ridge in Upcountry Maui and severely reduced reception on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island...so much that you will likely need an outdoor aerial antenna to receive the signals. Second and probably more importantly, KGMB the local CBS station switched frequencies with the MyNetwork station KFVE. The effect of this is that CBS on Maui is a analog low power repeater...there are reports that CBS may be available as a sub-channel on either the MyNet station or KHNL the NBC station by the time of the SuperBowl but I wouldn't expect it to be in HD.

There are always sportsbars in Kona to watch a game at.
Thanks DrVeg, that worked! I've never had that problem before.

One other weird thing that does happen all the time though, is that when I turn on the 8300HD and it starts up on an HD channel, there is no sound. I need to change to a SD channel (where the sound works fine), then back to the HD channel. It's starting to get irritating.

Is there a specific problem you're thinking of?

I've been quite happy with my Series 3 with cable cards and tuning adapter. I still have to disconnect/reconnect the TA every so often when it loses the channel map, but otherwise it works like a charm.
