Ken,

DirecTV Customer Retention @ 800-600-8977

Call them and ask them if they will help you with a receiver. Of course, I had not yet signed up for the HD channels, so they took that opportunity to offer me a receiver, install and 3 months free HD.

Give them a try.

Channel 12.1 is down tonight. It figures...the first time I was going to watch NCIS.

Well I got a new HD receiver from D* for 199 with 3 months free HD. Not bad since I was already under a year commitment. Hope its not a Samsung but they couldn't guarantee what brand. Just hope it gets better off air reception than this integrated dtc100.

Way to go, Ken! Maybe you'll get the new RCA! It depends on what the individual installer has on his truck. My guy was a rookie but he had the new box. He said the other installers had been trying to get him to part with it. He totally messed up my rca plugs but he did leave the good RCA.

Good luck. Report back.

PS. I faxed KSLA and asked Engineering to please try to get HD working by the weekend playoff games. (I emailed them too. They would not answer their phones.)

Ken and friends,

I emailed KSLA about their digital signal being down. Ted Small emailed me back that the signal is NOT down.

His reply:

There is not a problem with the digital signal. I would like to make
you aware of a pending issue that all stations in our market are dealing
with and that is the issue of PSIP. What that means is a programming
guide. During the next three weeks we will be testing a guide service
that will provide up to date programming information that was prior to
this time just the same thing. What this will require of you as a DTV
viewer is to rescan your channels occasionally, at least during the next
month if you find that you cannot find us. Your tuner is like a
computer and if it has old steering data then it might appear that we
are not there.

Thanks,

Ted Small
Director of Engineering & Operations
KSLA-TV-DT

Update: I re-scanned all over the place, with 2 different antennas. NO KSLA-DT.

I left a voice mail for Ted Small. Fingers Crossed...

Yeah i tried 2 rescans also on both tuners on 2 different antennas, no KSLA...as a matter of fact when i manually entered 12-1 it locked up my tv and it shut off. So there was something bad going on with their signal, maybe they were working on it....but during prime time?? Not a good idea...experiment during the day when the soaps and oprah are on not during prime time. I will have my new box Saturday if my wife doesn't kill me for getting it...:-)

I have an 811 and I pull ksla in on 17-01. 82% signal.
I am still trying to get ktal to pull in.

I just re-set, rescanned, re-booted, etc. and found KSLA on 17.3 using my Sony digital tuner. I called KSLA and got them to leave a message for Ted. Geez! What a disaster.

I can't get it on my DirecTV box (RCA DTC210) but I can on the Sony GW IV.
After a long conversation with Ted Small this morning, I realized that he thinks everything is rosy with his digital signal. I assured him that a lot of people in S-B can't find 12.1 anymore. He said it was probably their equipment, since he is able to pick it up just fine at the shop on a Samsung ATSC receiver. I assured him that I have re-scanned using 2 different tuners, 2 different antennas, more than once each and no more programming on 12.1. I told him I get some sort of carrier signal at 90% strength, but no programming. He promised to look into it.

Everyone may want to consider callimg KSLA and complaining, especially if you are unable to find them on a re-scan.

Ted Small, Chief Engineer

Good luck.

NFL Playoffs in 25 hours on KSLA...

When i got home tonight i tried for KMSS once more and no luck, then i tried 12-1, tuner went to 12 analog...so i put in 17-1 and it went to 12-1 and pulled KSLA in so something has changed since the other night. If they are doing the PSIP thing they still are not broadcasting any program info. All i get are the call letters. I hope they do get it all working correctly it would be nice to have guide data from ota.
Ken,

Apparently Ted got things sort of back to normal. I'm getting 12.1 like before. I also get 17.3, which is odd, (only on one of two tuners.) I'm glad I called Ted and insisted that he be paged. He thought everything was fine and dandy. In fact, even though I told him about 5 different ways that 12.1 was down, he insisted it was okay. I later called and told him that his signal was at 17.3 and, a couple of hours later, they were back up at 12.1.

Lesson: They aren't paying close enough attention to HD yet. We have to keep them informed. They don't always know when they are off the mark.

Well i guess i just will not get KMSS here, got my new receiver Samsung 360 still no KMSS...KSLA seems to come in a little better now. did the KMSS guy give you an idea where to point your antenna as in degrees like antennaweb gives? I think I need my antenna up higher in the air...25 ft or so now just doesn't seem to be good enough. Also D* cannot activate the receiver due to their server issues this weekend
post #255 of 2886
I went to mapquest, printed out a map of KMSS' address (there will be a star marking the station) and drew lines and estimated angles from where I estimated my house to be. Then I got up into the attic with a toy compass and did fairly well.

Good luck.

Called the control room today and they said they are having problems with the hd feed. I guess no hd football today. On Kmss anyway.
I called several times and heard some discouraging news:

1. Chief Engineer Jerry Wimberly no longer works there
2. James, the acting chief engineer thinks the signal is ok, since it's HD on their monitor (which is apparently looking at the network feed...)

Kevin, the master control supervisor is there and swears it's HD there. I've told him repeatedly that it's not HD. You might call him and confirm my observations.

Sad, sad, sad...
the better get this fixed by the super bowl
post #259 of 2886
I'm NOT optimistic.

have you called them back? James, the acting chief, does not answer his personal phone. Call the control room again and ask them what's being done to correct the problem.
James is on his way to KMSS. It is midway through the 3rd quarter. They may try a reboot of the computer. If so, we will lose digital signal completely for a minute or two.
My friend and I plan to talk to Program Director Doug Ginn on Monday, if possible, and GM Mark Cummings when he gets back to town. This is unacceptable.
I've just made the decision of no HD superbowl at my place.... (question is will shreveport/bossier have it at all??)

For the few of you getting KMSS ota, are any shows/sports showing up HD? maybe a percentage guess?? (the percentage of shows they have in HD of course... 24/football/others?!?! )

Right now I get all locals other then kmss with my current antenna, but if it's as bad as i'm thinking, I can't see a reason for me to try some of the CM antenna's.

I'm sure there are plenty of other "lurkers" who are wanting to hear their responses and reasoning... so please keep us posted.
I would say about 30% of the programming that is supposed to be in hd is actually broadcast in hd. I was actually getting excited about the super bowl until last weekend and they completely blew it with the nfc championship game. Nascar starts next month and they need to get this fixed.
All,

I talked with Program Director Doug Ginn yesterday. He tried to blow some sunshine up my drawers and blame the lack of HD on the weather at the game site. I reminded him that his Master Control Ops both told me they were watching the game in HD in the control room. Ooops...

I explained to him that I would be needing a waiver, since they were no longer able to provide a HD signal.

He replied that waivers were out of the question (some sort of Fox HQ rule...right...) and that, "This will get fixed!"

I called him today to let him know that "24" was not in HD last night. I had just walked in this everning when my friend SC called to tell me that "American Idol" was in HD!!! Sure enough!

I'll call Doug and congratulate him tomorrow. Now...can they maintain HD through the Super Bowl??

Winter: We get HD OTA from KMSS by using a directional UHF antenna and pointing it at KMSS' station tower, not their main tower. The station is over by Independence Stadium, at Greenwood and Jewella.
Is your Fox channel there in HD? (KMSS) If it is, please inform cpanther95 if it is so he can add your dma to the list of dma's that have FOX HD
post #266 of 2886
House,

I can't reply to that particular thread because it asks for Dolby Digital 5.1 information and I don't have DD. Perhaps someone else.
I got it, I will let them know they attempt hd from time to time. When it does show hd it is dd5.1.
I believe because of how they do the splicer system, ALL fox hd stations will be in dd 5.1, but thats not really the point, cpanther95 just wants to know if the station is running in fox hd 720p, if it is, go to the hdtv programing section and find the thread about fox stations going hd thread, I'll tell him that your market I believe is up and runnning.
Houselog,

Tell him that our Fox is up and running, but only low power and low percentage of homes able to rcv.

30% (I understand this is just a guess on your part) but if you notice it to be that bad I'm deffinately not in a hurry.

Is it about par with KTAL? (b/c I don't even bother tivo'ng the HD feed for ktal anymore...)

now that's interesting... hmmm, so antenna web is mostlikely off on this one? Guess I'll get to pull out the trusty maps and plot this out :-P (or the truth... point and try method)
