How do disable live buffering?

Out of curiousity, any particular reason you're doing this?

Remember, it's just television...

To avoid the wear/tear on the harddrive write/read for every live buffer frame.

I would like it to be in this state because I hate to turn on my TV and switch the input to the ReplayTV box and have a live show appear. I strictly use my ReplayTV box for watching previously recorded shows and it is not easy to determine if the show that comes on is being recorded or just a live show. (I know the record light would tell me but it's in another room behind a closed closet door).

Just press Replay Guide when you turn it on, then pick a show...

The only constant is change.

It would be "nice" if Replay automatically dropped you at the menu instead of where you left off, if you were on live TV. I hate turning on the machine only to see the middle of some show that is recording. I was recording a football game and turned on the TV and ALMOST got the score from the third quarter that I hadn't started watching YET! I was able to look away before I saw it, but the look on the coach's face made me think we were loosing, of course, he always looks that way...

I know of two ways to disable live buffering:
1) Set unit in standby mode (essentially power down)
2) Start playing a recorded show, then hit stop. The unit is 'untuned' to a channel so therefore is not doing live buffering.
I like solution #2 however if the unit then records a scheduled show...it is left in a 'channel tuned' state and live buffering occurs. Any way around this?

Live buffering uses a lot of CPU time---it has to do a high-quality record and a high-quality playback simultaneously. This makes the UI extremely slow to respond to keypresses. It can sometimes take a good 30 seconds to bring up the show I really want to watch.

JUMP button will bring you back to the last program watched, be it a Channel or a recorded program.

Change through a few channels (PBS, Discovery, TLC) to ensure that they can't JUMP back.

This could be the dumbest thing I have ever read on the internet, and that says a lot because I have been following the election coverage.

Hard Drives absolutely do wear out from use. They might last a long time, but they will wear down and break eventually. Some sooner than others.

Of course, I can't speak for Kohath, so I'll defend my interpretation of the comment:

If the HDD is on, it's on. Stop mode, buffer mode, pause mode, record mode -- everything but Standby and Electrical Failure Courtesy of the Power Company mode -- the thing is spinning.

I've yet to see a HDD, though, that failed because the heads can't move. It's always been the bearings which wear out first in my experience.

HDDs, plainly, are meant to be used. From PCs to $XXmillion servers use the same type of HDDs. Doesn't really matter if they're SCSI, IDE, MFM, RLL -- they're all the same. But I've had PC IDE HDDs die just as often as Production Server SCSI HDDs.

Most detrimental to a hard drive is heat (other than dropping it 9 storeys). Keep the unit properly ventilated. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Be nice to one another.
