Austin, TX - HDTV - Page 208

I did a rescan last night on my TV and didn't see anything on Channel 17. I am in NW Austin and can see all the towers out of my balcony. Granted, it's LP and I'm using rabbit ears, but I was picking up all the LP Stations in Austin prior to the switchover, now I'm getting two spanish stations and a church station, don't remember the channel #'s though, but I know it wasn't 17.

Which station will own this channel? I saw nothing last night 18 miles from the towers with an attic antenna.
It's owned by a company called Mako Communications, which is a company which basically owns low-power licenses and then leases out all the subchannels. They own a bunch of low-powered stations in Dallas, among other places.

Can't pull in KTBC out here in Bastrop. They must have taken down the big new antenna and gone to backup.
Yep...KTBC is apparently doing tower repairs and that means they've had to severely cut power temporarily. No telling how long, but hopefully this will take care of the issues they've had since the beginning.
getting KTBC at about 50% (normally 75%) here in Georgetown...and stable. Not seeing any breakup in video.
Hopefully, the weather won't delay them too much. Perhaps 10-14 days? FWIW, here in Austin on Steck Avenue they're at 95%, just what they were before.

I just confirmed this with the engineer. They have intentionally reduced the gain in the direction of Tyler to prevent interference with the Tyler broadcast signal.

And now you know why nothing is going to change in that direction.

Up here in Llano, I usually get KTBC around 80-85% on the signal meter. Now it's in the 30s and 40s with some dropouts and freezes.

They are hoping to have the new antenna remounted by the end of the week, weather permitting. The backup antenna is lower power and also located lower down on the tower - a double whammy for those of us further out.

"Weather permitting" is not a particularly promising phrase in this cold/wet/windy/miserable El Nino winter...
Well, the forecast looks ... decent ... so far for the first seven days. A lot of folks down on Brazos are keeping their fingers crossed.

KXAN is still dropping out on 1521 for me. I'm in southwest Austin (Wm. Cannon/Brodie area). I've talked to TWC about it; they gave lots of runaround and rebooted my box twice, to no effect. Basically, they've been zero help. Made trying to watch any Olympics coverage an exercise in frustration, and I've dumped all my NBC shows from the DVR schedule. I'll just have to catch them later on one of the on-demand channels...

Gonna be interesting to see how TWC acts when I let them know I'll be paying short on my cable bill, since they've shorted me the service I pay for. And as luck would have it, my contract with them ended in February!

I've seen no issues via over the air, except for the day their tower caught fire and the station was out completely. Sounds like a TWC problem. I would have them send someone out to your house.

The other morning I woke up to see a channel 17 had been added but of course no signal when I went to it. I'm 20 some miles from the towers in woods and a valley so unlikely an LP would get through. Can't remember the call sign - it was something like KNIC.

Seems like weather conditions were just right and it tuned in KNIC out of San Antonio

Are you using a Vizio TV or a DTVPal DVR? Those are the two brands that I know that automatically add channels.

There was one evening about a year ago, I was able to pick up 6 Houston channels in Round Rock. Perfect storm weather / atmosphere conditions

I was watching RTV on Channel 17 today (KVAT).

How do these low power stations stay in business? Seems like an area of a few thousand viewers wouldn't be worth any advertising dollars.

Can't pick 'em up in SW Austin. Can't pick up KBVO 51 either.
I used to get analog KBVO 51 very clear where I live, and now I don't get them at all. I'm thinking they must have shut down their analog transmitter, or lowered their power a bit. Not even a peep on 51 anymore.

Did you ever get this resolved? I had TWC reinstalled yesterday and cannot get KXAN-HD (1521) or KNVA-HD (1550). All other channels are fine. They are sending a tech out tomorrow.

On another note, the original install was with one of the new Samsung boxes, the H3260. I wanted a DVR, so I had to exchange it today for an old Scientific Atlanta box. I had very little time with it (the installer said they were just starting the rollout, the clerk at the Duval location said they were still supposed to be in testing). I liked it a lot. Seemed more responsive and easier on the eyes than the SA box.

Don't live in Austin city limits so I don't know, but does the city have an office that regulates TimeWarner? If yes you might want to contact them with any ongoing problems and see if they can help. I used that approach in a city I lived in before and surprise, when the local government that may decide to give the franchise to someone else the next times it's up for renewal, I got an ongoing issue resolved quickly,

Wow - I had no idea they were rolling them out. It is likely that they will push out the software the Samsung is running to the SA/Cisco boxes as well - at least that is what they are doing in other areas.

Thanks, that's a good idea. I'll wait and see what the tech says tomorrow. I initially canceled two years ago due to frustration over TWC's tech support and customer service, so this time I won't hesitate to (politely) escalate my issue if it isn't fixed.

If ever you want Time Warner to jump, simply say you're getting satellite. Just be warned that if you live in an apartment complex with "preferred" cable, they may call your bluff.

They were supposed to be out in January, but the software was too glitchy. The only reason they're out now (On new installs only i believe, you cannot get one from a lobby at the moment) is that the distribution center ran out of standard HD boxes. The software has been modified and is running great. Also, as for the SA boxes getting the Mystro software, I believe that at least *some* of them will be getting an update rollout on 4/1. That said, Mystro is running slow on a test SA 8300HD that i've played around with a bit.

Thanks - just a warning to anyone with an 8300HDC and an external eSATA drive - the 'upgrade' to Navigator/Mystro will break your external drive! This is only true of the HDC, not the HD.

Anyone know when Austin is going to get smacked with the new Navigator software? From a few of the above posts it sounds like non-dvr boxes either already have it or are getting it? (Samsung boxes??)
