First of all, thanks to everyone for posting their experiences here. Hearing everyone's luck, I decided to make the call myself.
Unlike most other posters here, I am NOT a long-standing customer, I've only been subscribed for ~7 months, so I wasn't sure what kind of luck I'd have.
I went through the whole spiel, telling them I was considering cable b/c of the cost difference, etc., even though I'd have to back out of my contract with DirecTV to change to cable.
She initially told me that the best she could do was a $100 credit off the price of any receiver I found on my own. She told me that if I had been a customer for 1 year, she could have given me $200 off the $399 deal that this post originally referred to, but since I had not been, there was nothing she could do.
I told her that if she would give me the $199 deal I'd buy today, she told me she couldn't do it w/o permission and put me on hold for about 5 minutes. When she came back, she told me that she would "meet me in the middle." I figured this meant 300 for the full deal, but she went on to tell me she could do it for $199 if I agreed to sign up for a new year of programming at the same level I am currently at (subscription to HD package not required).
So, like several others here, they charge me the full $399 to my CC, then credit my account to make the net effect $200. (plus taxes and shipping). My market does not include the OTA antenna for free, but I figure I can do that myself.
Considering I've been with them less than a year, I find this to be a pretty good deal. I haven't taken the plunge yet, but imagine I will call back to take them up on the offer within a day or two.
Thanks to everyone for the great tips!
PS: If anyone in my situation got a better deal than this please let me know!
