in my area the reason TBS-HD is the only one on 72 is because at least in my area that is where the music choice channels are and where that on demand preview in the upper right when in on demand is

thanks for mapping out the bunchings. It was funny that just flipping through the new stations momentarily, that I was most impressed with TBS. Guess now I know why.

I thought ABC looked kinda off last night, especially with LOST ( I noticed a bunch of distortions and flashing), but looks like that one is still only split two-way, so must have just been a bad night.

I have to assume that Comcast is going to be monitoring and tweaking these channels for quite some time to satisfy the masses.

Well I was hoping for DiscoveryHD since they give away the SD version. For the rest of it of course not, it was just curiosity.

I just spent an hour plus with the new HD channels and I'm not impressed. Battlestar Galactica (recorded last night) was very choppy, both in audio and video. Distracting and hard to understand. I know they use a shakey-cam technique, but this was as if frames were missing, making the picture jerk a bit. And little parts of words missing too, making it hard to understand. Same thing on Animal Planet. However, I noticed the same for the Kentucky Derby, and that shouldn't have been compressed more than usual. So I wonder if something else is going on with the signal.

Anyone else have this experience today?

Whew! Glad you're having problems. I've been in the dumps since Thursday ruing the day I switched from Comcast to Verizon. Too bad about BSG. I have it recorded to watch tonight - in SD.

Hope they straighten out the glitches for you quickly.

Also, the $2.00 for cablecard, is that per card? We've got two tuners in the DVR now and that's something I'd like to keep.

2 dollars if you get 1 multi streaming or 2 per card if you get the regular cards. So I would try and get the multistreaming.

Hello,

I am currently a comcast expanded basic cable customer. I was wondering if it was worth it to upgrade to the Digital Starter package? It looks like it is the same price as I am currently paying. However, it looks like they say I would need to add $6.50 a month to do HD even for local HD. But I currently am getting HD over my current cable, would that mean I would have to pay more to get the same thing(except for on demand of course)? Or does the extra $6.50 give me the HD channels that came out May 1st that I don't get with my current cable like scifi HD and discovery HD? I would probably pay an extra $6.50 for that since I bought a new HDTV.

Are there any other differences between expanded basic and digital starter? Does anyone recommend not upgrading?

Also, one last thing, does the cable box have an HDMI output? I have a new HDTV I would love to use HDMI with. I am not talking about the DVR or HD DVR, I don't want to pay the extra for that.

Thanks for any help, I am glad to get a local perspective for Portland.

So, after 2 weeks of having lost 2-1, 8-1, and 8-2 from Comcast for some unknown reason, I decided to do a rescan. Now, I have the 3 above channels back, but have lost 6-1...

I too have lost 6.1 recently. I've done a couple of rescans with my TV's built-in QAM tuner, but no luck.

Hopefully it gets resolved quickly enough.

I had 6.1 and 49.1 move to 80.1 and 80.2 last week. Maybe they shifted there for you as well?

Having watched a bunch of TV on the new channels and some DVR'd material from the time period since the new channels were added I'd have to say that I haven't noticed a thing. I was fully expecting to see some terrible PQ based on all of the pre-whinging and that's definitely not been the case.

I have an older CRT HDTV, so maybe it's just that my boat anchor is being forgiving, but I'll take that as a data point in the plus column next time I have to move it.

On my Vizio, 6.1 is showing up on 80-3, and 49.1 is showing up on 80-63.

Looks like Comcast is not able to provide the info to have the TV remap these channels like hey are doing with 2.x, 8.x, 10.x, and 12.x

This makes me pnder about the analog switchover coming up in February:
  • the analog channels have specific channel assignments. For example, Channel 2 identifies the 6MHz channel that starts at 54MHz in the VHF frequency band.
  • when the analog channels go away, there is really no longer any meaning for the original 2, 6, 8, 10, 12, 32, and 49 channel assignments as an indication of where they are located in the VHF/UHF spectrum space.
  • the QAM channel assignments are dynamic, so it is important for the cable company to properly decode the broadcast info, so you will have some feedback as to the channel you are actually viewing; so yet another way for the cable company to make you WANT to have a cable box

Thank you! Trying 80-1 was not successful, but putting in 80-3 manually caused the TV to flash a picture quickly and magically 6-1 works again!

Just signed up for HD via Digital cable. I got a updated HD box with HDMI called Motorola dch3200. Picture quality is great!!!

IT EVEN UPCONVERTS 480i to 1080i via setup menu. I am very impressed with the picture quality of the new channels and especially with the new box.

Well, they did it again. No SNL and it was because I show 100% full. I unplugged the DVR and now it says it is 24%. Trying to see if Survivor will record tonight but it will not let me get to the menu yet. The MYDVR will show recordings but will not show the screen that lets you select Series Recordings, etc.

I can think of NOTHING ELSE that I pay for that gives me so much ONGOING trouble!

***UPDATE*** OK, menu is back!

It was for just this type of problem, which kept happening again and again with a few different Comcast Moto DVR models, that I bought an HD TiVo about a year and a half ago. Despite the extra cost, I've never regretted it.

I have been thinking about that. Is the guide correct, especially PBS-HD? It is off on Comcast as they use the wrong feed. Also, can you get 1 multistream cablecard now? Any deals on the TiVo guide subscription? That is my main issue!

I TiVo a number of PBS shows in HD from Comcast. These include: Nova, Frontline, and Motorweek. The guide is correct for these shows. I never have a problem with the wrong program being recorded. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the guide information for any other OPB shows.

Of course, when OPB goes into one of their periodic "grubathons" the schedule may be disrupted. But I haven't seen this happen in a while. So perhaps they leave their HD alone when begging for money.

Edit: I record more shows than I view. So I selected an episode of each of the above PBS shows currently stored on my TiVo and I confirmed that the content matched the title. It did. However, I haven't recorded Charlie Rose on that TiVo in quite a while (so I took that off my list above). Right now he doesn't appear at all in a quick search of the TiVo's program guide for channel 710.

Thank you. I believe a Frontline was one that was not correct. I think the issue is that SD and HD are not the same as they use the East Coast feed for HD. Comcast has had it wrong. I remember it was a pain to record a live play a few weeks ago.

And OPB blames Comcast, and Comcast blames OPB. You'd think OPB would be very motivated to have the guide be correct no matter who's at fault, but they don't seem to care.

I'm sure that the Frontline episode saved on my TiVo HD is correct. It's titled something like "private warriors". When I did a few 30-second skips from the start of the program, that title jumped out at me because it was in HUGE letters that filled the screen.

I wonder if you should perhaps complain to OPB about this. They may know who to speak with at Comcast regarding program guides.

Thanks, I will check. I forgot the two PBS-HD shows that were wrong, but I do know that I mentioned it a few posts back.

Has anyone had trouble with audio from NBCHD lately? It sounds like it is at the end of a tunnel. I show it coming in as 2ch AC3, which should be fine, but it comes out HORRIBLE.
KGW sends DD 5.1 for all programming, even for audio that's encoded for DD 2.0. If you're seeing 2.0 then something is set wrong. If you're only hearing the left and right stereo channels, it will sound something like a tunnel with no center channel.

So, AI, last night was 4:3. I guess that was due to election scrolling. Dancing With the Stars had that too, but when the scroll was done they switched back to HD (16:9). I feel like we are back in the days when Color TV just started!
I was amazed that our wonderful local fox affiliate (sarchastic) did this. They took their number 1 rated show and first off had the election scroller at all and then kept it in 4:3/upscaled SD. This is just amazing to me that they would do this.
KATU received strict orders from ABC not to interfere with any of the actual dancing routines for DWTS, which is why the HD flipped back on for those performances.

I am fairly new to HD. I got a samsung 50A450 on the way now. Currently I have comcast expanded basic with the on demand box. I am wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade to HD on comcast or not. I was also considering switching to dish or direct tv. I am in SE portland so FIOS is not remotely available. I did notice though qwest has run fiber in my area and now are offering fiber internet. Thoughts?
