I'm sure Bob will chime in via either E-Mail or even on this thread, but a lot of times networks get all upset about local stations playing shows out of time slot, or on different channels (even digital channels of their own). I'm guessing that, in CBS' eyes, it may have been OK for WDBJ if they ran "The Amazing Race" on the main channel and ACC basketball on 7-2, for example, but not the other way around.

I know some of the ABC affiliates running ESPN-originated Sunday Night Football (in their home markets for the NFL teams playing) ran into problems trying to run "Desparate Housewives" too early.

I don't see why not. It's a new year, time for a new thread. As long as I give Mr. Moderator the new one for his stickies at the top of the forum, I don't see why there would be any problem.

Besides, I'll be putting up a new reception poll just like the current one so we can see how reception is. As far as I know, you can't just delete polls. (Though I could be wrong)

They said they were going to show The Amazing Race tomorrow at 7pm. Is there some rule that they can't show the programming today if they are going to replay it tomorrow.

I'll have to email Bob in the morning. My parents are here from out of town and are very disappointed. I understand the alternate programming on 7-2 but which will get more viewers - CBS primetime programming or reruns of Becker and Green Acres.

Chris,
We live in a world of compromises. In order to get the ACC package, a certain number of the games must run on the primary channel. Also, we pay a penalty when we run CBS programs out of their live time period. CBS generally will not approve running the delayed program on a secondary channel, nor if it blocks another CBS program's live clearance. That's why preempted network programs run at 7 o'clock or in the overnight hours. I have an in-box full of complaints this morning with respect to not clearing live last night's NCIS. We take the heat on that in order to get what is a very popular ACC sports package.

I just came into this thread because I was going to ask if you guys wanted me to reset the poll since the results are likely out of date. Looks like you guys are a step ahead of me.

I would keep this thread going for historical (search) purposes. We aren't starting new annual or monthly threads any longer - instead, we prefer a permanent thread for the area since these local threads are being referenced more and more outside of AVS. If the thread keeps changing, all those references will be dead links.

As long as Trip in VA keeps the first post up-to-date (like it appears he has been doing), there's no reason to start a new thread. It will also prevent 10 pages of Roanoke info from being basically lost to the archives.

Let me know what options in the poll you want changed, if any. I'll post the current poll results and reset the poll so you'll be able to see any changes in reception.

Thanks Bob for your response. So its pretty much you can run secondary stuff on the -2 channel but CBS won't let you run live CBS programming on -2. So CBS requires their programming on -1 and the ACC package requires a certain number of games on -1 as well.

I understand - rules are rules - just as long as it wasn't something where someone didn't think about it.

I still remember the thread ID of the original thread if you want (277399).

Well, OK. I can see why you'd want to do that. I update the first post whenever there's a change.

And thank you for offering to change the poll. I think we'll wait for WFXR-DT to power up and WDRL-DT to come on the air. That way we'll have a more accurate picture.

But if you don't mind, let's go ahead and reset it now. I think the options we have are alright. Then when WDRL and WFXR do their thing, I'll let you know and we can reset it again.

EDIT: On second thought, is it possible to add "29-1 32 WVIR-DT NBC", or would we have to drop one to do that? If not, I think we can safely drop WMSY for it, just make sure that people know WBRA and WMSY act as one.

I have the Sony 42" that is digital cable ready. I am not using the cable box and I can get the HD for CBS, ABC, and PBS over cable. But I think Cox also had ESPN HD free as well. Anybody know the station it is supposed to be? I cannot find it? Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

I saw you guys already had 10 options, so I replaced WMSY - however, I then noticed that I have the option to add additional options (don't know if that's a new thing, or just a MOD thing) - so if you give me the proper WMSY info, I'll add it back. Any other channels you want to add, list them as well. I'll add as many as I can until I reach the limit.

ESPN HD is 703 on Cox cable
INHD is 711 free
INHD2 is 712 free

I think we have Standard Cable, but the TV picks up the HD stations through cable mentioned earlier as well as 2-79, and some digital stations - ESPN Classic, NBA TV, and a bunch of audio music stations, but none of the stations get out of the 100's. ESPN Classic is highest channel showing up on 114.8.
Anybody have something similar?

I do not know what is going on. I would like to find ESPN HD. I may have to call Cox and ask what we have. (The apartment and cable are furnished through my wife's work, so I don't see the bill.)

Thanks for your help.

Thanks. There's just one problem. Seems I can't vote in it. Is this true of anyone who has voted?

And did you receive my PM? I gave you full info on what we needed for the poll options.

But if you don't mind, I'd like to add up-to-date programming info. Here's the options for the poll:

07-1 18 WDBJ-DT CBS; [2] Ind./News; [3] Weather
10-1 30 WSLS-DT NBC; [2] Vipir Radar
13-1 34 WSET-DT ABC; [2] ABC
15-1/52-1 03/42 WBRA-DT/WMSY-DT PBS; [2] PBS You; [5] PBS-HD
21-1 20 WJPR-DT FOX; [3] WB
24-1 41 WDRL-DT UPN
17-1 17 WFXR-DT FOX; [3] WB
29-1 32 WVIR-DT NBC
38-1 36 WPXR-DT PAX; [2] PAX (W); [3] Worship; [4] PraiseNet
11-1 11 WVPT-DT PBS-HD; [2] PBS; [3] PBS Kids; [4] PBS You

And no, 13 does NOT air ABC News Now. Sadly.

Combining 15 and 52 was logical, since they cover different areas, but I don't think we should combine 21 and 27 since they have almost 100% of people who get 21 also get 27 (analog, should also be true for digital when 27 powers up). This gives a good indication of whether or not 21 could split from 27 (meaning, show WB in HD and leave FOX-HD for 27) without losing viewers.

Thanks for the help.

- Trip

If you can add WMSY back, it would be 52-1 42 WMSY-DT PBS; [2] PBS You; [5] PBS-HD.

Thanks again.

Be patient with the poll - I've updated the info and opened it back up, but it is still registering who voted previously and will not allow them to vote again. There's a PITA solution that I'd like to avoid, but if it's the only option I'll take care of it. Give it 1-3 days.

Just wanted to report that I finally went up in my attic and adjusted my antenna (as I had mentioned before I have been hit or miss with ABC in reception - signal only at about 30%). That wasn't going to do for the Tech game tonight - so I thought it was time to find out how good a signal I could get.

I'm happy to report that from my location (Cottonhill Rd. - Rt. 221 - Roanoke) I can pickup ABC at about 90% strength after adjusting my antenna (Winegard Sensar 2000) without any breakups.

I did loose WSLS in the meantime - I can't believe their lightbulb strength. Ironically though I get Fox off Poor Mountain better than before. Thaxton Fox is great too. I did loose PAX as well - which is strange as they always had a real good signal (but can't say there is any reason to watch it either as it is SD). PBS comes in good too - and of course CBS is great no matter which direction I point my antenna.

The Motorola HD set-top box used by Cox displays their cluster of HD channels in the 700 neighborhood. Evidently the new sets with a built-in QAM cable tuner capture at least some of the HD programming, but where the set maps the channels seems to depend on what brand of set (or maybe who made the tuner chipset). A fellow was telling me the other day that his new Sony set displays WBRA's 15.5 HD service at 3.5, but has WDBJ at 107.1 and WSET at 108.1. So far I haven't heard from anyone who is getting HD on an Adelphia system without a set top box.

OK, ok, ok...now my curiousity is way up after reading your post. Other than readjusting your antenna, what has changed to allow you to receive ABC? Did they increase signal strength...or have you always been able to receive ABC with the proper antenna adjustments?
I never had adjusted my antenna to try to get the best reception from ABC. At the time they came online I had a Samsung box and when they went live I got about a 40% signal but the box held the signal pretty good.

When I went to an LG receiver the signal quality was still about 40% but the box would not keep a lock without having blockiness, drops, distortion every few minutes (once in a while I assume atmospherically it would do better than other days). Actually recent reception had been better but would still break up. Last night it was a blocky mess.

So I went in the attic and actually had my wife downstairs (I'm sure she just loves my dorky projects like this) with a walkie talky telling me if the signal was better or worse.

I was amazed that the signal level went up as high as it did. I was only hoping for like 50-60% signal.

Thanks for that bit of info bob. That is pretty interesting. I am on Cox, but that is exactly the type of info I was looking for. I get 107.1 (a PBS station?) and 108.1 (CBS) even though the TV didn't automatically find them last week on the auto program (Thanks!). I am also getting WBRA on 15.5, WDBJ on 7.1 and WSET on 13.1. I have the SONY 42WF655. What other stations are you guys getting on your Sonys?
I found the answer I was looking for on ESPN HD.
Even though it is free, you have to have the set top box to get it unlike the other free stations. Oh well!
Right now I am using a Samsung SIR-T151 HDTV reciever with a Zenith HDTV antenna to pickup OTA HDTV channels. I also have analog cable with the apartment complex (they have their own cable system using Dish network as a provider of programming) they do not offer any digital programming. Would it still be possible that there is an HDTV signal in there with the local channels so I wont have to use the Antenna to pick up HDTV?
Dish nor DirecTV offer HD locals. The only way to get digital locals is OTA. You will still need your antenna.
I am showing 27-1 on my STB. There is programing showing Fox shows in HD. Is this the new setting for Fox in HD? If so, when does it start?
27-1? Are you able to view this channel? Is the programming in HD?
It is the same as 17-1. As far as HD goes. I work nights (Sun thru Thurs) I have know way of knowing. I'll try on Friday. Funny thing is, it just appeared. I did'nt do a scan or anything.
Is the programming info appearing in your on-screen guide for 27-1?...or is it still not-available like it was before on 17.1?
The programming listings appear on my receiver. I guess we'll find out whether Fox 27 is providing HD tonight at 8 p.m., because The O.C. is listed as HD in the guide.
Wow - this could be good news...
I was just going to pose the question that with the Super Bowl exactly one month away - who thought Fox would be ready!!
Also don't forget tonight is the debut of ESPN 2 in HD on DirecTV - for the sports fans out there!!
Or...if an HD program is not available until 8 tonight, you could tell if they are now HD by viewing the current audio mix for the current programs. If I understand this, if a station is broadcasting HD and Dolby digital 5.1, you will still get Dolby Digital 5.1 even for programs that aren't in HD.
Just got home and did a rescan of OTAs on my receiver. I can now receive 27-1 with program data visible. It doesn't appear to be HD yet because my screen is not being shrunk to a 4:3 screen on my widescreen. Non HD programs on HD channels always shrink to 4:3 with gray or black bars on the right and left side on my widescreen tv. However, seeing the program data is available on WFXR-DT is a good sign and the fact that they have remapped to 27-1 probably means they are really close to going HD.
My Samsung SIRT 165 still will not receive WFXR DT channel 17 even though I get a good signal. I am hoping when they update their signal for HD I will be able to receive it. I hope they have HD for the NFL playoffs Sunday.
Just checked during the O.C., and it's still stretched SD. The one good thing is that I'm not having the dropouts I used to with the signal.

I'm just glad WFXR granted me waivers a few years ago, so the lack of a local Fox HD broadcast is now a nonissue with D*.
