Does the 3000:1 contrast ratio indicate that some of these 2004 LG sets have a black level equivalent/near equivalent to the panasonic's and fujitsu's?

I have not yet seen one of these 3000:1 CR LG sets, but I would not necessarily think that they will be comparable to Panasonic based on the #'s. CR #'s are not measured the same way by all manufacturers, and CR does not directly equate to black level.

I just saw the 42" with the 5000 CR at CC. It looked fantastic. The black bezel is very classy looking as well. I see that there is a 50" model. Anyone seen that yet?

There are 2 42" ED models. One is the RU-42PX11 which is black and silver with integrated speakers. The other is the RU-42PZ71 which is all black and has detatchable speakers (I think this is the only one CC is carrying). The equivalent 42" HD, 50", and 60" models all have a more silver bezel. There is no equivalent 50" to the RU-42PX11.

can you shed light on LG"s thinking on the RU-42PZ61 and putting two NTSC tuners on it and not al least one ATSC, why no digital tuner on a HD panel?

I went to BB last night and noticed how well this unit looked. BB had the RU-42PZ61 next to the ED Panasonic. They were running a loop of DiscoveryHD. The LG looked a little better, but that's because it was HD vs ED. The processor in the LG worked extremely well compared to other displays such as Philips, Sharp(LCD), and Samsung. I thought the LG, Panasonic, and Pioneer 4341 stood out by far in terms of its ability to produce a clean picture. At the same time, this could have been affected on how the feed was being given to each display. In the end, I will have to put LG up there with Pioneer or Panasonic's (new '05 Viera's) as I look to make a purchase. I will just have to wait a compare with new Viera's once out.

I certainly cannot claim to know what they are thinking, but I would guess that it is primarily price driven. I don't think you can find another 42" HD plasma at retail for close to the pricing of the RU-42PZ61. The DU-42PY10X with digital tuner and CableCARD is available for $700 more.

Robert: Thanks for all your work on this FAQ/spec page. Jsut starting look at LG as my local AV guy is getting in some of the high altitude models. I live at 7200 ft and getting to see a model that will work (well) here has been a challenge.

I've been very impressed with the LG plasmas that I've seen. They're the only plasmas that rival Panasonics in terms of black levels. The colors are pretty nice, too.

I do wish, however, that they'd use HDMI instead of DVI, and that the MSRP would be lower.

The models with integrated digital tuners (DU-42PY10X/DU-50PY10/DU-60PY10) do have HDMI instead of DVI. They do not yet have an integrated 42" ED, unfortunately. Regardless of MSRP, the LGs are generally less expensive than Panasonic at retail.

Nice page Robert!

I have a set that isn't on your list: DU-42PX12X

It has a case/stand/speakers that resembles the 42px11/h on your, but it is high resolution like the 42py10h.

Note it is not the same as the 42px12xc that you have listed there. The DU-42PX12X I don't believe is fanless or has the faroudja for example. Also the case on the 42px12xc is all silver in a style that the local store calls "last year's design" On the 42px12x, the 'intermediate' bezel between the glass and the speakers is a matte black, not silver.

I just got a DU-42py10x. I actually got it begrudgingly 'cause the Sony LCD rear proj. I wanted was on backorder. I think the LG set looks fantastic. (my 1st HD set) and was waiting for the Sony (which I was going to do an exchange on).Well the Sony came today and looked awful in comparison. I'm paranoid about plasmas regardless and want to find an extended warranty. The store wants $1000 for a 5 year. Thats ridiculous!! Any suggestions? Does LG offer an in home extended warranty?

Is anybody a user of or have you seen the 37" DU-37LZ30 or the 42" DU-42LZ30 from LG? These seem very pricey at MSRP but there may be discounts available.

I've been seriously considering the LG-RU42PZ71 (EDTV) or the LG-RU42PZ61 (HDTV), but am not quite willing to pull the trigger due to price. I really like the 5000:1 contrast ratio and CC display models look great! I've been monitoring the Vizio-P42HD thread (see threadid 462259) which appears to be a decent 42" HDTV with 3000:1 contrast ratio set at a very, very competitive price at SAM"s and Costco. One of the more recent posts reveals that the Vizio components have "LGE PDP" stamped on the ciruit boards. Could the Vizio unit actually be an LG Plasma display manfactured in China and repackaged under the Vizio name?

Please give me a detailed review on your DU-42py10x. Saw this at BB and has everything I need. HDMI, RGB, IEEE, CC and your normal inputs. Not to mention 8 day EPG. I'm waiting for the 50"

IMO that's WAY too expensive. There have been several threads recently which have discussed warranty prices. In many cases people have been quoted ONE THIRD of that amount. Those threads should turn up in a search. If you can't find any info let me know and I will tell you what I was quoted.

I posted this on another thread but thought it would go better here. I looked very closely at the Panasonic and LG ED sets at CC and Sound Track (UE in Colorado). At CC they were within 6 feet of each other and running the Discovery Channel HD loop. In between was an LG HD, a Sony HD, and a Hitachi HD. About another 4 feet away was a Panasonic HD (all 42"). Above the LG ED was an ESA ED (also 42). My thoughts. THe ESA did not look good to me. The LG and Panasonic ED's looked VERY close to me. I watched carefully for black levels, skin tones etc (I had the saleperson turn down the contrast). I watched for any artifacting etc. To my eye at least the LG held its own against the Panasonic. I viewed from 4-12 feet. I also concur with those who feel that in the 10-12 ft range there is not much difference between HD and ED set. If you want to view the ED sets 4-6 feet, you may be subject to SDE, I was. Bottom line, for $500 less, the LG is still on my list. Now here is the important question. For the life of me I can not understand why the RU-42PZ71 msrp is $800 more than the RU-42PX11/H. I have looked at all the specs and can see no difference other than color. What am I missing???

Hi Guys,
I have been reading these forums for the last month trying to decide between the Panny (ED) or the LG (ED). I saw the Panny and the RU-42PZ71 at CC and the RU-42PX11 at a local HiFi House. I could not see any picture difference between the LG's and IMO they both looked better than the Panny. I ended up pulling the trigger on the RU-42PX11 for just a hare over 22 benjamins. I hope I did the right thing.

Good Question....One difference I noticed that actually favors the lower priced PX11 is that it has built in speakers..I don't think the PZ71 does..
I did see the PZ71 listed online at a place called ABE's of Maine for around the same price as I paid for my PX11..

I've been very pleased with my PX11 that I got about a month ago at BrandSmart in Atlanta for just under $2000.00 + tax..I got their 3yr extended warrenty (which is very comprehensive btw) for an additional $118.00..

I did alot of plasma shopping beforehand, and for the price, this model was just too good to pass up. The PQ and specs compared favorably or even better to just about every other model I looked at in the 42" ED catagory. The one's that seemed a little better were alot more money...for not much difference...

I do wish it had HDMI insead of DVI and 2 ports would be nice also so I can connect more than one device..but I could always get a DVI switcher down the road if I feel I really need it...

Also, My old RCA Pro Scan DVD player didn't look that great on this set...not horrible..but after watching HD progamming..it just didn't do enough for me anymore..

So, I went out and got the Toshiba SD V596 Upconversion DVD player with HDMI ($168.00) to hold me over until the new HD DVD movie format comes out. It makes a world of difference..Still not HD TV.. but much closer...

I also have a Yamaha Reciever and Mirage Speakers for Home theater sound..The LG intergated just fine with all that..

And I have comcast cable using the Motorola Dual Tuner HD DVR box (DCT-6412)...The Analog cable channels look fair to worse than that and the higher band digital channels look better but not superb...However, I'm not so sure that the cable PQ is really a symtom of the LG TV itself..but rather a problem with the weak cable signal trying to display on a high res digital widescreen TV set. Anyone with other comcast experiences please let me know so I can continue to call and bitch out the cable co....

BTW, the Comcast HD programming looks amazing on this set so everything else pales in comparison anyway...I do wish they had more HD channels though..I've never watched so many Discovery Documenteries and IMAX stuff in my life But I find myself just sitting there staring at the screen in amazment from the PQ...

I hope this "mini" review helps anyone looking at LG's....the RU42PX11 in particular... because there isn't alot of feedback on these new sets anywhere right now..

But IMO, this is an unbelivable deal for anyone looking for a good quality low price ED Plasma

Anyone have any overscan problems with the 42" EDTV display? I was following an earlier thread about it and couldn't help but notice the same problem on the TV @ my local BB. There also seems to be a concern regarding black crush and lip sync. Is this common with this set?

I certainly did not see any lip sync problems, and I watched more than a few minutes of people speaking (I think I would have noticed as I have seen this in Samsung DLP's). As for black crush, I'm not sure. I have seen close up shots on this forum of the dreaded black crush, and it did not seem like a real big deal to me. Don't know if there was overscan or not.

Is anyone familiar with the LG MU-42PM12X?

It seems like a great value...I know it does not have an integrated tuner, but that's not a big issue for me.

Anyone seen or have any thoughts on this model?

I saw the consumer version of this model at CC when I looked at all those models noted in post #21 above. To my eyes it looked about the same as the HD Hitachi, Panasonic and Sony. If the consumer model is any indicator, I think you would be pleased with the one you are considering.

Can anyone describe the 4:3 stretch modes LG Plasma's offer?

Do they offer any type of Smart-Stretch where the scaler pulls more on the edges than the center?
