I am currently going for a HTPC home build. I am looking for a software that will play both DVD and Blu-ray. It should also be able to have DVR capabilities and rip discs from my personal collection for use on the home network. I will also be posting this on the HTPC forums.

You aren't going to get an "all in one" solution that will do all that. But you can get close.

Windows Media Center comes free with Windows 7 and is a DVR and Live TV tuner. It will also natively play DVDs.

BluRays are another story and you'll need to buy software for that. TMT or Power DVD are the most popular. Will cost you anywhere from $50 to $100 and there is no way around this due to DRM. Both however have plugins which integrate right into WMC so you can then play Blurays in WMC directly.

Ripping DVDs or Blurays will require other software. DVDs have plenty of free software out there. Blurays of course there is always a cost. Using a solution with AnyDVD will cost you about $100 for the license. I personally use and love MakeMKV which right now is free in beta but will eventually cost $50. It will rip any DVD or Blurays to MKV files which will play in WMC via Media Browser plugin once you install a codec. Easiest way is to use the Shark007 codec pack.

Hope that helps and yes, the HTPC forum will give you great more info.

Wow VHF is so worthless during thunderstorms. Was trying to watch Wood for weather updates and it was breaking up constantly. Turned over to WOTV which was showing the same thing. UHF for the win!

As usual, WOOD went way overboard with their weather, pre-emptying the first 20 minutes of Biggest Loser to cover a storm that had already moved out of their viewing area.

The same thing happened to me last year when the Douglas/Fennville tornado hit. WOOD was useless but luckily I could get the same thing on WOTV.

I still miss WZZM on 39. They were my most reliable digital station on 39. I have yet to receive them now that they are back on 13.

I know all the buzz among station engineers is how VHF high band is the ultimate place to be in this new digital age, but I'm not convinced.

It was all the buzz around transition time, but not anymore!

So what just happened on Charter?? All of a sudden all the local HD channels disappeared and after a rescan, no locals and only 8 SD channels! So far another rescan is showing 7 digitals so I'm guessing it will finish with only the 8 again..... CHARTER, LEAVE IT ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good Morning,

We had a number of issues in your area last night. If you were having trouble last night you will probably want to rescan today. Are you still having issues?

Thanks,

Dylan

Dylan, yes there were issues! LOL I started a couple rescans but had varying results. I started another around 12:40 AM and went home. When I got in at 3:30 pm today the locals were back.

Sorry for the trouble Glad to hear they are back though. Was there anything else we could assist with?

Thanks,

Dylan

Is anyone with Comcast having troubles with On Demand? I get an error message (don't remember the exact message) when trying to play anything on there and was told it was affecting a large number of people so I'm wondering if anyone else is actually having problems or if the guy on the phone was feeding me a line...

I am "trying" to watch the finale of CSI. Getting dropouts left and right. Into commercial break, perfect reception. Picture breaking up again after the break. And you wonder why I am going to a HTPC which will totally bypass the local affiliate and more importantly, advertisers. Thank you WWMT for showing me that I am making the right decision to dump $$$ into a machine which will bypass your source of revenue.

CBS.com in high quality/HD for the win.

And how about last night. Time for Hulu again since the local stations have to take up half the screen telling me it's raining. Gee thanks guys. I'm not even sure how much I watch from the local stations anymore because of all this.

HTPC's are awesome. Been pay TV free for almost a year and a half now and still loving it. I do have OTA for HD from our local stations but it gets harder and harder to watch with quality issues like WWMT or weather alerts telling me the girl scouts in some town 100 miles away aren't selling cookies tomorrow because it's snowing. Uggggggg....I'll get off this rant again.

i'd love to understand how charter requires us to be sports view subscribers in order to gain access to ESPNNEWS HD. we have access to regular espnnews, but not the HD one...i'm not even going to pretend to find this acceptable when i'm paying extra for HD access already.

Good afternoon.

We appreciate your feedback and comments and definitely understand why this would be frustrating. We are reaching out to our marketing contacts for information as to why it was structured this way. We'll forward any details as soon as they are received.

Thank you,

It seems that WWMT is having real problems hitting their marks and coming back from commericals. The other day they must have missed it by at least 30 seconds, the guest for a talk show was already out sitting and having a conversation...

Thank you for your patience! After sending an inquiry about your comments we have been advised that ESPN News HD should be viewable to our Digital View subscribers.

Can you check and make sure you are able to see this channel?

Thank you,
Steve

Unfortunately our contract with ESPN doesn't allow us to make that possible.

We appreciate your comments and feedback about the issue and hope you'll reach out to us in the future if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

As of about 9pm it appears to have been resolved (well after the ballgame, though).

Thanks

Any issues with the channel 13 HD signal? For some reason ever since the storm went through last week I haven't been able to pick up channel 13's HD signal.... all the other channels seem to come in fine.
