how do these boxes store their data? do they receive the stream, convert to mpg and save on drive for replay?

How about HDTV?

The stream is already MPEG, so no conversion is needed.. They store the raw data on the disk, then during playback is sent through an MPEG decoder then out to your TV. HDTV is done the same way.

This is why they have much better quality than standalone units, because there is no MPEG encoding going on.

HDTV is only on Dish right now, and it's about a $1000 for a 921.
