As a point of reference, this needs to be tested in each case. My Pio 4300 (another Costco item) is an HD panel and scales everything to 768p. I thought, as you, it must be better at deinterlacing than the $160 Pio DVD player. However, using a nice digital DVD source like Star Wars II, it was obvious it scales a progressive source far better than interlaced. Watch chapter 9, from about 5 seconds in. As the camera moves in on the "council", look at the robe edging on the figure seated 3rd to Yoda's right. It is a strped pattern. As the camera moves in watch for pixel crawl. On 480i I see the pattern move. On 480p it is stable. In fact, the DVD looked dead until I switched the player to progressive. This would be much different on an ED screen which is just de-interlacing and not scaling.
