I don't know why you would say that, it sounds like the SD version has 80GB, why would the HD version have only 40? I would hope it would have the 160GB hard disk, I guess the way to make it happen is to call and request it.

Hi to everyone thought I'ld add to this discussion. I presently have Adelphia and Dishnetwork. With Dish I have a 921 DVR which will record 25 hrs of HD or 180 hrs of SD. It was quite expensive priced at $999.00. I had to get one on EBAY for $1200 because none could be found in time for the Super Bowl. The hard drive is 250 GB so I would think the Adelphia version would have to be at least 160GB. The 921 was quite buggy at first random reboots but I have received over the air software updates that have made it more stable. If Adelphia would come out with a HD DVR I probably would cancel Dish all together. There customer service has really dropped since I joined 2 years ago and their picture quality except for the HD content is overly compressed heavy artifact in SD. Just thought I give you another point of view I was a strong satellite supporter but with the whole Viacom mess and the expensiveness of owning equipment cable has started to look alot more affordable.

Funny thing today. I get a flyer from Adelphia that advertises it's DVR service. Guess what...under the DVR Q+A section there is a line that says

"Can the DVR record and Playback HD programs?"

The answer is

"YES, if you have the E8000HD version set top, you can record and playback HD programs."

What the hell is up with them? Why advertise what your not offering? Guess I call again tomorrow and see if they do actually have those boxes.

ABC-HD (MUR) has a serious problem tonight. I was watching my bracket go down in flames on CBS, when I decided to flick around. ABC is showing "Tarzan" tonight, and the sound is almost non-existant...it's coming thru as PSC 2/0, but there's no dialogue. Left & right channels are there, but no Center sound whatsoever.

It's strange...when CBSHD was doing the NCAAs yesterday, for the first time I actually got 5.1 sound. Yet, I don't recall ever noticing that I had ever received that before (I wasn't sure if it was just my receiver or not).

I don't know what to think...is it MUR's problem or Adelphia's? Any ideas guys?
Well, sounds like MUR's sound problems carried over into Sunday night. I tried watching Alias in HD and there was no dialog. It was weird... music was playing but when anyone opened their mouth, nothing came out of the speakers! I tried the coaxial digital into my HT receiver and got the same problem so it wasn't just the stereo feed.

Can anyone get Adelphia to respond to this? I've tried contacting them via E-mail to no avail. I would love to see them switch over to Boston's WCVB as an experiment for a few nights to see if the problem goes away. How hard could this be? All the other channels we get in HD are from Boston so what's so special about WMUR?

>>> EDIT >>>>

Well, I heard back from someone at Adelphia thanks to someone on this thread and the word I got was that this was definitely WMUR's problem. Unfortunately, I was also told that they cannot swap WCVB into their HD line-up as a replacement for WMUR. I guess WMUR is actually paying Adelphia for the priviledge to be the ABC-HD channel... which is weird... I would have thought it was the other way around.

Kevin: I just received an email reply from WMUR after I reported the problem to them. Evidently, they just installed a Dolby 5.1 encoder this past Friday, and they're having problems with it (obviously). They've switched back to 2.0 until they can fix the problem. At least they know about it, so hopefully things will improve soon.

As for Adelphia-NH carrying MUR instead of CVB, I'm not sure if MUR is paying them or not (like you, I wouldn't think so), but I'm sure Adelphia would need to pay WCVB (witness: WBZ-DT...how long did that take?!). Besides, I think MUR will get it together. For a smaller-market station, they really do a good job, IMO.

I try to look at it as: we're "early adopters" and the technology and business of HDTV is still catching up. I'm happy that I'm "ahead of the curve" so to speak, and at least being able to get HD programming (albeit with a glitch or five). It does hurt, however, when you can't watch an entire program...
Well, my in-laws were over for a visit the last few days. Tuesday night they were all excited to see this famous "HDTV picture" that I've been raving about. I flip through the channels... PBS gets their attention... but it's a show about pieces of ceramic in dirt (yeah, I know, *archeology*). So I switch to each of the networks. Only ABC-HD is broadcasting in HD (My Wife and Kids). Sure enough, the audio is out of sync! They were laughing... "sure, it has a great picture but you can't watch it". It was pretty disappointing.

So, Adelphia, you aren't going to be getting that extra $8 per month for HDTV programming from another household. This is the second batch of friends and/or relatives who've been turned off by this audio problem on WMUR. I mean really, when you come right down to it, all it takes is a teeny-tiny little negative and people say "why pay more for that?" It's a shame that HDTV is getting a bad rap because of WMUR.

Actually, I think it's a shame that Adelphia is charging $8 more per month for something that is mandated by law -- they have to do it eventually anyway. They're just doing a quick money grab on the folks that want to stay on the cutting edge.

I don't understand how Adelphia works. I'm just across the border from you guys in Amesbury, MA and we get WCVB on HD. We finally got CBS WBZ about 3 weeks after NH did and we still don't have FOX. Does each office negotiate their own deals?

Oh, you've got to be kidding me! Amesbury is about 10 minutes from my house in Atkinson. I swear that the people running Adelphia are just clueless. If you can figure how they manage these things, please let us know... I haven't been able to.

How is the audio on WCVB-HD?? Is it synchronized with the video. Please tell me it's off so I don't get more frustrated with this whole thing.

BTW, the stupidest thing about the response I got from Adelphia about WCVB-HD is that my standard def broadcast channels include both MUR and CVB! Give me both in HD and I'll be happy.

Oh yeah, and another thing... you aren't missing much with FOX-HD. It's broadcast in "enhanced definition" 420P, not HD. Not too impressive. It's not much better than plain Jane digital cable. In fact, when I zoom it to fill my 4:3 screen, it looks worse than the standard def analog braodcast. FOX 25 is one of the best looking channels in my analog lineup.

Adelphia has reportedly just signed a deal for ESPN-HD. We should have it early next week!

The schedule of live HD events can be found here:
http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tvl...s/espnhd/index

At present, none of their other programming is HD, rather 480i SD stretched to 16:9...not pretty; however, they are building a brand new HD studio to open June 7, so Sportscenter, etc. will be in HD.

Just in time for Sunday Night Baseball & NHL Playoffs...thanks, Adelphia...keep 'em comin'!

ESPN HD is OK when they broadcast in HD. I have it through Dishnetwork. Pretty painful when they up convert. I'm excited because the manager of adelphia sent me an email saying that NESN should be up by opening day. I would love to watch the sox home games in HD!!

Can't wait for NESN either...Bruins home playoff games & Sox all summer!

Looks like the line-ups going to grow even more:

ESPN-HD: Ch. # 772
NESN-HD: Ch. # 773
INHD: Ch. #774 (coming soon!)
INHD2: Ch. #775 (coming soon!)

This on top of HDNet & HDNetMovies coming soon as well!

Things are lookin' up, boys!!!

Bruins playoffs in HD??!?!? Woo-hoo!

When? When?

Hey, at least with sports, I don't have to worry about the audio synch!

Kevin
He said NESN should be up in time for Sox home opener, which I believe is 4/9. However, Bruins playoff games will take precedence on NESN (which they should!!) and the Sox games would be moved to Channel 16 in SD. I can't wait to see how NESN does HD hockey...I've heard it's great! Hopefuly our Bruins can have a nice long run in the playoffs for a change!!

ESPN-HD will also have some playoff games as well, and he said they should be on around the same time, if not sooner.

From what I've seen, live sporting events are really what HD is meant for!! BTW, Kevin, what did you think of the NCAA basketball games last week?

Perrycom, is the ESPN HD story a "sure thing". I have no reason to question your credibility but your story was awfully close to April fools day and I haven't seen any other reports about it. I don't want to get all excited if it isn't true as this is the channel I wanted all along. Have you heard anything else?
No, it wasn't an April Fool's ploy! That is the information the Adelphia general manager from Londonderry emailed to me...just passing it on.
Wow! The Final Four in HD was awesome. So much depth to the picture.

Luckily, I had some friends over and they saw this good side of HD.

Unfortunately, the only other HD broadcast (other than PBS) was ABC's showing of Disney's "The Emperor's New Groove" and, of course, it was waaaay out of sync. Great picture though.

It's official...just announced today:

Adelphia, Disney Ink Deals: Adelphia Communications said Monday it has struck two agreements with The Walt Disney Co.'s cable operations, extending its carriage pact with ABC Cable Networks while expanding the channel offering of ESPN's networks.

As part of the agreement with ABC Cable Networks, Adelphia extended its multiyear affiliation agreement with the four channels making up ABC Cable -- ABC Family, Disney Channel, SoapNet and Toon Disney. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Meanwhile, Adelphia also expanded its carriage agreement with ESPN to include ESPN Broadband, a Web-based service that offers customized on-demand sports video highlights; ESPN Deportes, the Spanish-language network; and ESPN HD, the high-definition television national sports service. Further details and financial terms were not disclosed.

Well, my wife finally started complaining about our HDTV last night. I clicked over to ABC for "I'm With Her" and as usual, the audio and video did not line up. She got all upset and told me to cancel the HD service and bring the box back. They are charging me $7.95 per month for this service and do not seem willing to fix their problems so I can see her point. However, I love the picture I get and I really want the Bruins in HD.

Later,
Kevin

EDIT>>
I just got off the phone with a tech at WMUR. What a nice guy! Nothing like the last time I spoke with them... maybe last time I caught them at a bad time? Anyway, he watched "I'm With Her" using his OTA antenna last night and there was no problem. However, he is very aware of audio sync problems with ABC feeds and said that there may be some frame alignment issues during the conversion onto Adelphia's channel #709.

Apparently, MUR just had a meeting with Sony earlier this week about this exact problem. It turns out that MUR has all kinds of delay adjustments on their end and he can tweek this signal a lot. He will call Adelphia today to see if he can get this fixed. He does not want me making a stink to get WCVB out of Boston... he wants me to watch his station.

I hope this news is as good as it sounds.
Any word on a date when ESPN-HD will be turned on?
Kevin: That does sound like good news...at least they're trying to fix it!

BillN96 - I'm trying to find that out (as well as NESN - Bruins start tonight!)...will post here as soon as I hear anything.
All right guys...here's the deal:
NESN has been signed (about 30 minutes ago!), and will be on shortly on Ch. 773. Here's the message I received from the GM:
Quote:
"The data center has the paper work. A certain code needs to be built and added to all HD boxes. They are trying to do it. I know that my headend tech is working with them now. I cannot say for sure though if all of the pieces will fit tonight. We here in Londonderry are trying though.

Go Bruins!"

As for ESPN, they are awaiting some equipment in Londonderry to enable them to get it online. Should be very soon.

Hey guys - NESN is ON! (ch.#773)
Bruins/Sox home games....yeah, baby!!!!
Doubt Friday's Sox 3pm opener will be on though, since we're in Boston DMA and will likely get blacked out in favor of UPN38. Really stinks since we don't have it in HD. But, at least Fri. nite's home Bruins game will be!!!

Note: You may get an "unauthorized" message (I did). Call CS and have them send an update to the box. BTW, the rep didn't know it had been added...surprised?!

I've haven't seen any new channels either here in Hudson. Seriously thinking of switching to Direct TV, same payment and will get everything I receive now plus a huge sports package and full line-up of local channels. HD box will also receive OTA signals and every channel 100% digital. Can also upgrade to the HD DT TIVO when officially released. Adelphia will always be behind the curve due to their money issues. I don't like that they skimp on even general services such as sending email status of pending deals, letting us know ahead of a channel update and a scheduled launch date. Why do we need to chase them or scour a message board for basic info? We rely on Perry to keep us updated, thanks Perry, lucky thing you found one employee at Adelphia willing to share some info with their subscribers. I pay a huge cable bill, upward toward $140 monthly, I like my toys . Getting tired of run around, mis-information and BS like the last minute turn on for the super bowl (IMO, a ploy to deflect angry customers).

I agree adelphia has gotten better, but it does seem we pay rising cable bills to a company that ALWAYS is behind the others in CS and technology. Maybe I expect more from my service than others, but when my girlfriend started bitching about the lip sync issues with HD and the usual complaints about the power link, I've started looking into DSL and DTV. Besides it will give me more to play with . Both new services allow for 30 days to try and return if not happy, can hurt to do a side by side trial.

Not usually impulsive, but with the prices of both cable and DTV almost identical (other than equipment cost for HD). It's worth a look and some research.

Has anyone already gone this route or examined the pros and cons of both services?

DJ, from the research I was able to do on OTA reception of HDTV, I don't think this would have been a viable alternative for me. Atkinson, NH is just far enough away from Boston that I'd need a large amplified UHF array antenna. I had the antenna and LNA all picked out. I went back and forth but decided that even with the right antenna and amp, there was a strong possibility that it would suffer dropouts, especially during bad weather... and everyone knows we never get bad weather in southern NH.

I think for now, I'm stuck with Adelphia.

If things keep going the way they are, this might not be too bad. I would've liked the Super Bowl myself. I was extremely disappointed that I couldn't get that.

BTW, I have my doubts that I'd even be able to get DirecTV at my house! My southern exposure is forest. Even if I mounted the dish on my chimney, I think I'd get leaf interference which I hear gets bad during rainstorms.

Kevin
