Hey all, just wanted to report in on a few findings here, this is actually about OTA rather than comcast but don't think we have a Southern NH OTA thread.
I tested my Tivo's antenna input with a over priced but rather impressive radio shack antenna. Surprisingly from I was able to pull in about 10-15 channels in my basement.. I returned it and seeing that I had some success I decided to put something up in the attic. Knowing that my house sits at 500 feet plus an additional 25 would put the antenna up at 525 feet above sea level and the fact that I could pull in stations in a basement that is 1/2 concrete walls gave me a good indication that I'm in a good spot.
On Tuesday I had an electrician run a boat load of Cat6 to a few rooms in the house so we could distribute our Tivo S3/HD to other rooms w/out paying Comcast for more cable cards or another box. [The HDMI over dual Cat6 is working incredibly well; if you want more info on this let me know, its cost effective and provides a perfect picture!]
Anyway, I got a channel master 4228 HD antenna for $50 from solidsignal.com and hung it on a $2.00 pvc pole with two wood screws into the rafters... I hooked up the Tivo and low and behold the channels poured in. Easily 30 channels (of course some SD simulcasts, duplicates, or channels I have no interest in). But it is nice to get all the sub-channels of the PBS stations; stuff Comcast doesn't send to us. I was curious if I could pull in a Providence station; turns out that one is a stretch; I get a signal but its very weak. If I rotate the antenna to the north east I can pull in ABC and NBC from Maine, nearly 90 miles away.
I don't need the stations from Maine but this antenna is doing its job; even with out a preamp. Despite it being pointed to the south east for boston stations it pulls in WMUR and WENH just fine. Ironically, the station I bought the antenna for (WGBH HD) has gone dark on 2-1, rumor has it they moved to 19-3 but I think Tivo is all kinds of confused.
So just a few notes from my latest project here; hopefully someone will benefit from my situation. Agreed I'm up on a hill and your situation my be different, but there are a few channels out there that Comcast doesn't deliver to us and some of you may want to give the old rabbit ears a try..
