New Orleans, LA - HDTV - Page 11

I finally heard that WGNO (ABC) was back online with an OTA HD signal coming from the westbank. I have a Samsung DTV HD receiver with a Terk indoor antenna (not the best, but works with some spinnging hehe). I scanned last night hoping to watch LOST in HD...even though it was a repeat and I DID pick up 26.1, but it was NOT the same programming as 26.

When I switched back and forth on my DTV HD Samsung receiver, I noticed that 26.1 had an "i" logo instead of the ABC logo in the bottom right of the picture. Can anyone shed any light on this?

From what I can tell, it has something to do with mapping of scanned channels and previous posts mentioned Samsung receivers, but can someone please spell it out for me. I'm using a 4 year old 43" Rear Projection TV, and not widescreen, but the HD is awesome picture OTA with the Terk Antenna.

I'd really like to get ABC going so I can finally see an episode of LOST in HD...anyone help me out?

I do LOVE watching 24 in HD and look forward to watching the rest of Prison Break and The Soprano's in HD!!!!

Thanks for the help,

'm trying to locate a LG-LST 3410A (now discontinued). The problem is that LG will not allow "mail order" sales of any of their products. Circuit City's web site advertises them for $419.99, but you have to purchase "in store only". Of course, no store in our area has any, nor does Baton Rouge, Houston, Atlanta, New York City, etc. There is a Electronics group in Nashville, that has them in-stock, for $499, but again, "in store purchase only".
e-bay has them from time to time, and I wouldn't mind buying a refurbished unit if I could find one in the $500 price range.

Any help will be deeply appreciated.

Get the Sony DHG-HDD250 tuner/DVR. It has twice the recording capacity. 30 hours HD

The DHG-HDD500 has 60 hours HD

Both are close to your price range. Google it.

I'm currently using a cheapo rabbit ears indoor antenna to receive local OTA HD channels. I've been able to tune into 4.1, 8.1, and several others (including the local UPN affiliate) for a while with very strong signals.

Just tonight I discovered I'm able to tune into ABC 26.1 and the local WB channel 38.1. 38.1 comes in though at only 480i, not a true HD format at all. I'm figuring maybe the station is slowly getting their HD capabilities back up post-Katrina. And I guess WGNO finally got their HD broadcast back up recently.

I still can't get WDSU or WYES HD OTA, and I'm chalking it up to the cheap antenna, but now I'm wondering if these channels just don't have their HD broadcasting back up yet. My main question is, is it worth it for me to buy a better antenna, or are these channels just not coming in due to the stations?

I live on the Westbank in Marrero off Lafitte Larose Hwy. BTW.

I live in Slidell just off Airport Road and noticed that PAX stations have increased their power in the past few days. I used to get them at 66% but are now receiving at 85%. ABC 26.1 and WB 38.1 are using PAX subchannels. That is why WB is only 480i. Thank goodness that they are putting 26.1 on 720p. It may be a while before we see them on their regular frequencies.

Here is what I get inside with a small Terk 55 antenna:
WWL 4.1 (94%)
WDSU ... I WISH!!! not on the air yet
WVUE 8.1 (85%)
WYES 12.1 (85%)
WLOX 13.1, 13.2, 13.3 (65 - 70%)
WHNO 20.1 (80%)
WGNO 26.1 (85%)
WNOL 38.1 (85%)
WPXL 49.1, 49.4 (85%)
WUPL 54.1 (88%)

I can't figure out why I can't receive WXXV 25.1 (RF 48) out of Biloxi. Anyone else in Slidell picking this up? It should be in the same direction as WLOX. I know it is half the power of WLOX but I was able to pick up WHAM 19.1 on the same day and that is only 150KW and in the same direction of WXXV. Is WXXV up and running?

Yes it is. I'm in Long Beach, MS and I even have had trouble picking it up at times. I find myself watching more of Fox8 than Fox 25 because the signal is better and I like Bob Breck anyway.

Thanks Rich! So I guess I won't be catching Smallville tonight in HD
I've read here that some people can catch stations from Baton Rouge with larger antennas, so I might go that route and try setting one up in my attic.

You might not get WYES-HD cuz your antenna isn't pointing in the right direction. You mentioned you were using indoor rabbit ears...I get the same problem and it is fixed by pointing in the right direction. Check out antennaweb.org for the correct direction to point your antenna.

cheers.

I sent a message to the station manager today. Here's his reply:

Good Morning,
Is there any tentative date when you may resume broadcasting your digital
signal?

Thank you,
Ben Hardy

"No, I'm afraid not. Certainly won't be before the end of the year.
Appreciate your interest. "

So, get out those CM 4228s and point them to Baton Rouge 33.1, if you want to see ANY NBC HD this year!

Which begs the question - Why so long?

Every other station in New Orleans has managed to either come back online with their digital signal or work out some deal with the other local stations to transmit their digital signal (ala ABC / WB sharing bandwidth with independent 49).

Which also begs the question why no damn waivers? Jerks!

Agreed.

I know there are probably many legitimate reasons as to why they are not back on the air but I can't help but feel that the only reason they were on the air to begin with was because the FCC forced them to do so and now they are using Katrina as the excuse not to resume anytime soon.

No olympics in HD on NBC, etc.

In other words, they don't really care about their HD viewers. The result for me is that I don't watch anything on NBC anymore.

I have to agree with your reasoning. And I don't watch WDSU either. For the exact same reason. No primetime HD = I don't watch it.

And they Continuously deny my waiver requests. I'll be adding another antenna so I can get NBC From Baton Rouge.

Anyone else getting a blank screen on WGNO via OTA? Sound but no picture on the Saturday night movie "The Sixth Sense".

Any idea why I am picking up 49 on 26.1 (OTA) in Gretna?

Yeah, I haven't really tried getting up from my lazy butt and fooling with the antenna, but I have Cox which carries WYES-HD, so not being able to catch it OTA is a non-issue w/ me.

Do you have a Direct-TV HD reciever? I was watching TV when they re-mapped 49 to 26.1. I was getting the correct station until they did this. It is Direct-Tv screwing with the signal. My new Direct TV HD receiver will only show 49 on channel 26. However my Samsung receiver still shows channel ABC HD on channel 26.1. I'm going to call Direct-TV and ask the what are they doing and complain.
So am I the only one getting a blank screen on WGNO 26.1?

Audio is fine. but no picture. Great signal strength on all my recievers. started last night when they were showing "The Sixth Sense" and now on "Desperate Hosewives"

(that's not a typo. Hosewives was a neat show that's now completely stupid)

So... anyway... it can't be a problem on my end. It's happening on four different recievers in my house

three dish network recievers With OTA tuners

One Samsung Sir t151 OTA

and my HDTV wonder card in my HTPC (OTA)

All with sound but no picture when the show is HD. THe Commercials all come in fine and the SD shows all work, but no picture in HD.

I called WGNO and they said they would look into it... and that I was the only one who called.

I have a question about the NCAA tournament on WWL. When several games started over the weekend the network advertised that the game is in HD. Yet no HD picture. But during the first half the picture flashed and game was now in HD. Is this the local station not doing something when game starts or is this a network issue? Also, my Directv receiver gets channel 49.1 on 26.1 instead of WGNO. Sure would like to get this fixed. Thanks.

Same thing happening here, even on their feed to Cox. Just tuned in to watch Grey's Anatomy, and am getting no picture, only audio. Must be a problem with WGNO. Since it's been happening since last night, I won't be holding my breath to watch Grey's in HD tonight.

I noticed at Sears today that the OTA WWL they had tuned in on some of their floor HDTVs wasn't showing a true HD broadcast of the NCAA tournament. I fiddled with the remotes on one of the sets thinking they just didn't have it setup right, but I couldn't get a Sony model to display a true HD pic. So I guess there really was an issue, and not just a problem on your end.

It seems like ABC is ALWAYS having some issues with their HD feeds, as both OTA and through Cox it's the same shite you all have noticed...sound without a picture.

I dvr'd DH (for my fiance) but I guess she won't get the chance to watch it.

On a related issue...is it me or does the Cox NBC feed no longer broadcast the Tonight show in HD? It's about the only show that I occaisonally watch and now I don't even watch it that often. Guess I'm pretty much done watching anything through NBC...thank the HD kings that 24 isn't on NBC!!

I did notice also the few times I tried to watch Leno in HD, that it wasn't. There's not much on NBC that I watch, but I did catch SNL a couple of weekends ago and it was in HD. It's too bad Leno isn't on in HD, as Letterman in HD over on WWL is gorgeous!

Let's all complain to WGNO about their HD feeds and back up NOHDjunkie! There are going to be more and more people trying to catch them in HD as people start rebuilding their homes, and the only new TVs you can buy nowadays are HDTVs, so they better get their act together!
What I'm confused about is that during the Olympics, Leno WAS being broadcast in HD. I'm not quite sure what has changed since then.
OK so since WDSU is out of the picture for OTA.... Is anyone on the northshore getting WVLA DT 34 (NBC) out of Baton Rouge reliably? If so, what are you using for an antenna and preamp.

I'm in lacombe and have only been able to get a lock once @ 60% I'm at about 80 miles from the BR transmitters so this is gonna be a tough one I assume.

Figures...WDSU got on the HD boat to coincide w/ Cox's ad campaign to watch the Olympics in HD with their HD service. I got Cox's HD service just in time to watch the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics, and it was indeed in HD. I'll check Leno again tonight, but the last time I watched it (over a week now), it was SD. I tuned in just now, and Medium is on in HD, so we'll see.

The FAQ at http://www.antennasdirect.com explains that it's difficult to get signals past 70 miles due to the curvature of the Earth.

Yeah, I guess they're still having issues. Now instead of no picture, we get an SD picture. I emailed them yesterday at the address on their website, but haven't gotten a reply. I won't be holding my breath.

If I were to grade the stations based on signal strength, signal quality, content, I feel the New Orleans stations would get the following grades. BTW - I am in Slidell.

WWL 4.1 -
Signal Strength - A+
Picture Quality (1080i) - A+
Content and comments - Great HD programming from CBS - A+ (except for Monday night when four HD CBS sitcoms were replaced with WWL showing 1976 baseball movie in this market only - I haven't figured out programming decision)

WVUE 8.1 -
Signal Strength - A+
Picture Quality (720p) - A+
Content and comments - Great HD programming from FOX - A- They get an A- because I don't like the grey bars on the local SD. I think it is distracting and I am not sure that it is good for my plasma. I am glad it isn't bright grey.

WGNO 26.1 -
Signal Strength - B (they are stronger recently)
Picture Quality (720p) - B
Content and comments - Great HD programming from ABC - C I can only give them a C on content do to the problems they were having with their HD feed or lack of it recently. They also had that color shifting problem in the past which affected their PQ but at least they are trying!

WYES 12.1 -
Signal Strength - A
Picture Quality (1080i) - A+
Content and comments - Great HD programming from PBS-HD - A+ Even though they are not showing the same programming as analog 12, it is a fantastic picture. This is the station I flip to when I want to show the TV to friends when there is no other HD programming on.

WDSU 6.1
Signal Strength - F (off the air)
Picture Quality - F
Content and comments - F - I think it is amazing that a network affiliate in a 42 share market cannot get a DTV signal on the air until 2007 (if what we are hearing is correct). The local PBS has a digital signal on the air and they are public funded!!! NBC should throw them a bone because they are losing HD viewers!

WNOL 38.1 -
Signal Strength - B (they are stronger recently)
Picture Quality (480i) - C
Content and comments - No HD programming coming through from WB with only a 480i signal - C They probably will not do anything more until they find out what is going to happen with CW (combination of WB and UPN) but again at least they are trying!

WUPL 54.1 -
Signal Strength - B (they are stronger recently)
Picture Quality (1080i) - D
Content and comments - HD programming available on UPN but programs are not broadcast in HD even though they are sending out 1080i signal, the PQ is washed - D Also sound is not balanced (left channel higher than right channel). Like WB38, They probably will not do anything more until they find out what is going to happen with CW.

Skipping over 20.1, 49.1 and 49.4 - going on too long already on don't really watch them..

Final comments:
I guess I am going to have to get Carter cable but that won't help me with NBC or ABC problems. I would love to put up a large antenna and shoot for BR but everything I read, 90 miles from WVLA is a long shot!

Would love to know how many people are attempting to get signals OTA in New Orleans. With more and more people coming back and purchasing HD TVs maybe more people will complain at the short comings of DTV in a large TV Market.

I guess this is what it was like the when the first color TVs came out and techie people like us had to wait until the color programming caught up with the technology. MTS stereo in the 80's was the same situation. Eventually HD programming with catch up with the technology we have.

Any comments?
