Thanks, Louis for finally chiming in to the HD local news debate. That dude from out of town was dissin' your newscast!!
On a totally different topic:
Even though they were scheduled to do it on Dec. 15
, it would appear that DirecTV switched from the analog channel to a center-cut version of the digital channel for their SD carriage of FOX8 yesterday. They probably did that for all the locals at the same time, but the only one that caught my attention was FOX8.
How do I know?
I do not have the SD channels "hidden" in the guides on my DirecTV receivers, so you see both the SD and HD versions in the guide.
My wife tends to sometimes select the SD version from the guide, and she doesn't really care that it's not in HD.
Anyway, I get home from work yesterday, my wife was out for the moment, and I notice that the TV is showing (apparently) 8-2, the FOX8 Newschannel. Not particularly surprising, since the OTA tuners in my HR20's are set up to receive the OTA stuff, including 8-2.
I flip to the guide, to see what else is on, and I see that the HR20 is actually tuned to the SD version of FOX8 via DirecTV.
I checked the HD version - "Jeopardy", as it should have been at a couple of minutes past 6.
The SD version (via DirecTV) - FOX8 Newschannel.
The "real" Newschannel, (8-2 from OTA) was also, of course the Newschannel.
That was wierd...
I jump in my car to go bowling (Thursday night league).
A TV in the bowling alley is showing FOX8 Newschannel. ("Sort of an odd choice", I think, still not getting what's going on...)
A few minutes later, the video and audio from FOX8 Newschannel is replaced with the DirecTV "We are aware that this channel is currently out, no need to call us" graphic.
About 15 minutes after that, the graphic was replaced with the correct signal, the ballgame.
So, apparently DirecTV converted their SD reception equipment to receive the digital rather than the analog signal. And, their tech made a small mistake vis-a-vis FOX8!
So, they had to call their local tech back and tell him, "Tune that one to 8-1, dummy, NOT 8-2!!
