There's no Fox HD feed on the Jackson locals but I can get that OTA. So the SD issue isn't a problem.

I don't watch my own locals newscasts much less Jackson's, so it doesn't bother me

On a side note, it looks like New Orleans might be on the Dish HD locals plan soon with the new satellite going to 129, maybe even Baton Rouge too. But would I move back to BR? Nope.

Yep same here. once the B'ham locals went live on 61.5 my 622's got confused and would only lock onto the 119 feed sporadically. So off the Jackson I went.... so to speak.

I hope you are right about the no hd locals, especially on 129. Would be nice to be able to record 2 hd locals at once.
Plus i have a feeling come jan 1st, dish will only have cbs sd baton rouge on locals, due to dish fighting with abc(off of locals for almost a year) and now fox 44,nbc33,cw21 saying if dish doesnt pay more come 12-31-08 they will be off of dish also. There goes my br ota guide info

I record 3 HD locals at one time on a couple of evenings.

From the research I've done on this forum and others, it has to do with a flexicoder setting. I have tried emailing the station to have this corrected, but have not gotten back a response. WWL is fantastic as a station due to the no multicasting, but this blur issue is very annoying when watching sports. The issue is not there when I watch CBS NFL Sunday Ticket games in the 700's on Directv. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get it touch with the station engineer, please let me know. Thanks

bump as I still haven't been able to get this issue resolved. I got a response back from someone at WWL saying they think the processing that causes these blurs is turned off yet I continue to see it everytime I watch sports. I'm seeing it right now watching Army-Navy and would love to not have to deal with this during the Alabama-Florida game. I've also sent WWL-TV a PM but have not gotten back a response.

What brand of LCD do you have? There is a certain amount of motion blur associated with even HD sports but in many cases, the display technology/quality can make it unbearable or acceptable.

Sony SXRD, KDS-60XBR2. Love the tv and I know it's not the problem because when I watch CBS games on Sundays on Directv's Sunday Ticket channels, the blur is nowhere to be found.

I've seen the blur bigzeto is referring to. It's a WWL issue. It happens even in static shots on occasion.

I was just trying to watch the Dallas / Pittsburgh game on Fox 8 and it was a virtual "glitch fest". I turned it off because it is so annoying.

I do not watch Fox that much. Is this what happens on every program on Fox, or do they just save it for football on Sunday?
I watch the Saints game and it was glitch free as much as I could tell, but the Dallas game was awful, especially in the 4th quarter, and the audio went out around 5 minutes left in the game, but it did come back, just wonder how much the cold weather played into the program quality, the problems were not enough to make me quit watching

No cold weather problems. Watched Cowboys on KRIV Houston and there were no issues. My gripe is the Saints game didn't go further west than the Beaumont FOX station. I'm thankful for my slingbox in Lafayette

The first half of the Saints game was OK. There were a few bugs in the second half. The second game was riddled with glitches and had a huge audio crashing sound in the third quarter as well.

The glitches during a program are seeming limited to Football on Sunday. However, there is a glitch every night at exactly 6PM and 7PM on WVUE. You'd think that the problem would have been identified and fixed by now.

There's one at precisely 9:00 PM too.

Just as the 9:00 PM news starts, picture and sound goes out for about 5 seconds. It has all the characteristics of a total reset/reboot of some piece of equipment in their STL chain.

There was an identical 5 second outage yesterday as they transitioned between the first and second game of yesterday's NFL double header.

As for the Saints game, I noticed a few audio "gurgles", sometimes accompanied with relatively minor macroblocking of the picture, that could have been reception issues at DirecTV's receive center (I was watching via DirecTV), but nothing more serious than that.

Just a silly little note:

Our friend in this forum, Louis (tvengineer), was on the 9:00 PM FOX8 news last night, demonstrating how to hook up a digital converter box.

How long does the engeneering team working on the Analog transmitter think it will take to convert it to digital after the analog signoff next monday?

Thanks.

So WVUE is going dark on analog VHF 8 and staying on UHF29 (digital) till you get the Analog transmitter switched to digital... then you're shutting down UHF29... correct?

Fingers crossed my CM4228 will pull in VHF 8. It gets WYES on 11 @ 100% signal strength.

That is correct...
Not sure if it was the smartest way to go.. but the decisions were made by our prior owners and they can't be changed now. So for better or worse we will be transmitting DIGITAL on CH.8 after the change.

WYES and WVUE actually share a tower site.

So, the signal you get on channel 8, when they switch their digital to 8, should be similar to what you get on WYES (VHF Digital channel 11). (I get in the high 90's to pegged at 100 on WYES-DT depending on the weather so I suspect I'm good.)

I get WVUE's main channel from DirecTV, but we watch 8-2, the 24 hour news channel, a lot, and my wife is such a fan of the Beverly Hillbillies, she's actually set a series link ("Season Pass" in TiVo parlance) to record it from 8-2 on the HR20 DVR!

It's highly unlikely DirecTV will ever add 8-2.

Right, but my antenna is a CM 4228 which is a UHF antenna... although it picks up high VHF pretty well VHF 8 will be wait and see.

Hey Guys, I'm coming in late here so now I'm a tad bit confused.

So when fox goes digital-only early...I'll need to rescan as the digital fox will be on a different spot on my atsc tuner? And which Monday is this happening?

According to Louis' posts above:
  • Monday Dec. 15. FOX8 Analog shuts off. If you're receiving FOX8 DT on your digital (ATSC) TV currently, you're not affected yet.
  • Monday Dec. 22. The pre-transition FOX8 DT, on channel 29 shuts down and FOX8 DT on channel 8 kicks in. When this happens, you'll have to do a rescan to pick up the new channel.

The reason the "Dec. 15" date has the heavy emphasis on the air is because that's the date that the analog goes dark, and the folks with the analog TV's with rabbit ears will lose FOX8, as they know it, on that date, if they haven't bought a converter box yet.
Thanks for the clarity. I'll be ready for a rescan on Dec 22nd then.

Besides it moving to be moving in a location they want it in, will there be any other benefits? Better picture quality due to more bandwidth or anything?

Well that means starting on dec 15th, we will constantly see
"starting dec22 you need to rescan your tv's ,converter boxes etc."
As much as they harp the 15th shutoff, they better do this also or on the 22nd they will get nonstop phonecalls saying "my channel 8 is gone".

No difference in picture quality or bandwidth...
Lower electric bills ( a LOT LOWER) for the station, and better propagation over water are the best reasons for VHF over UHF.

Louis, will all of these changes affect anything thru Directv?

For my HR20 DVR, I tune "off-air" channels via a database populated by Directv. So do you think Directv will fix this change in digital channel on 22 Dec automatically? [based on my experience with them, I think not]

Cheers,
John

P.S. just saw you on the 5:00 news nice to put a face to the name...
