Connecting PC headphones output to modulator L&R audio inputs  

I have a spare laptop I would like to use as avi file player for the house. Can I just connect (using the proper cable) the headphones output of the laptop to the Left & Right RCA audio inputs in the modulator?.

I have always had doubts about the differences between what I get thru the red+black connectors for a speaker and what I get thru a RCA audio out connector of a VHS or TV (that is also just 2 cables transmitting audio information for either the left or right channels).
