Maybe you guys could sell the used exciter to channel 4 or 12 at a discount to get them a head start on their 4 year long upgrade to HD.
Though I'm sure whom ever you borrowed it from will be wanting it back.
OK, the truth is that we replaced a module in our exciter rather than shipping it off for repair. Not only was this cheaper for us, it also allowed us to be back on the air in less than the 1 to 2 week repair time. I figured that this group would not be happy with me if I left us off the air for that long a time. Normally, they loan us an exciter, but they didn't have one available this time.
The reason 4 and 12 can't "do HDTV" has nothing to do with the transmitter. They are using a "480i only" capable encoder at the studio location. They would need to purchase an HD capable digital encoder AND their network would need to send them an HD capable satellite receiver.
The CBS network gave me the needed receiver when I got my transmitter and encoder installed. I have heard that one of the other networks (I forget which one, if not both) require the local stations to purchase the receivers if they want to broadcast HD. I don't know if this is true, however.
CBS even loaned me an extra receiver for March madness so I could have 3 different games on the air at once. I think I like CBS.
