A sample of 1960 aural/visual ERP ratio for KFDM-6
http://www.qsl.net/wa5iyx/images/kfdm-60.jpg
As long as you had enough vid carrier for the receiver to get a 4.5-MHz beat for the sound there were lots of "audio only" idents made back then

Hey thanks for clearing that up. I always wondered why it would happen. You may be talking about the same tower KAGN-LP is on. So basically, any time I catch XET-6, KRVS audio is gonna come in. Any way of knowing what radius it would take to get out of the KRVS signal? Just a guestimate. And also does this mean XET-6 isnt a franken FM after all, just overload in my area?

Yep, XET isnt a Franken...You COULD install a trap filter inline to get rid of KRVS overload....do you run a preamp at the antenna? If so, you'll likely need the filter there before the preamp (the CM7777 has one built in but it kills the entire FM band; there are tunable notch types that would just kill RVS and adj FM channels( and MAYBE one more at the TV for good measure.

Signed by the original W5KWA himself (who built KFDM and hired Richard...who is only the 2nd CE at KFDM...that speaks volumes)

Just a note in case you care (and even if you don't):

When I started here back in '69, the aural power was restricted to 10% of visual for all TV stations. Except for channel 6 stations which were allowed 20% to fight the FM radio interference problem.

Yes I do run the CM 7777 preamp.

Did you leave the FM Trap ON (inline) or off (out of line)?
IF you dont use the TV antenna for FM reception, then put the trap inline..and see how that works.

Just a sidenote..A letter was sent to Clear Channel requesting the 103.3 translator in BMT be turned off...it is no longer needed since KKMY is at its new site and height...so with 103.3 turned off, we can hear JACK FM out of Lake Charles in Beaumont!..IF CC doesnt respond in a favorable sense, I will post the email address so you can send a msg to requesting they turn off the 103.3 translator (Under 47CFR Part 74.1203 which basically says if a translator causes ANY interference to ANY broadcast station, then licensee takes corrective measures..up to and including termination of operation..which is what is needed here!)

I was never quite sure why they thought they needed it in the first place... I never had, not that I listened to 104.5 that much anyway, any problem receiving 104.5 anywhere in the coverage area of the translator to begin with. Didn't seem like the translator was never really needed...

The first xltor in this town appeared in Nov 1983 - 95.3 (downtown) for 100.3, who claimed that they were at a disadvantage as 101.9, 102.7, and 104.5 were on the HemisFair tower there. Hardly ever was it even mentioned in their idents - and a few times when their primary was off it would be retransmitting the 100.3 from Houston!
KPTY has filed a Minor Mod app to move to a tower a little more north and a little more west of where their CP had them. There is no contour coverage map generated, so I am not sure exactly they will be. Could be the tower where 88.1 is maybe?

UPDATE: It's not the 88.1 tower... I went to the tower registration site, and it shows to be the tower closer to higway 73, just east of Big Hill Rd. The other tower shows to be maybe about a mile south.

103.3 was originally put on by Patrick Parks, then chief engineer for KHYS 98.5 and was retransmitting an out of town station on it here...Pat left for El Paso and sold the station to Gulf Star (Steve Hicks...and brother Tom who was Evergreen; their dad John owned KLVI, WTAW, and a Lufkin combo for almost 3 decades before Steve took them over, and then both Steve and Tom, who owns the Dallas Stars, merged to AMFM then sold to Clear Channel..got all that?)

104.5 on the old Hwy62 tower did not have decent bldg penetration in Beaumont of its signal so the 103.3 was mated to be a "fill-in" which is a xlator NOT meant to extend the signal but IMPROVE it in a spot where the main signal SHOULD but doesnt cover well...IE: Inside its city or service grade contour.

NOW, with KKMY moved WEST and higher on the 800ft KBTV #2 shorty tower, it has LOTS of signal into Beaumont (almost as good as sister 106.1 KIOC)...so the 103.3 signal is NOT needed..

BTW, if you wish to file a request to have 103.3 turned off, you can send an email to SteveDavis at Clearchannel dot com and request the K277AG translator on 103.3 in Beaumont be terminated as it interferes with your attempting to OR actual listening (depending on where you are) to 103.3 KBIU, Lake Charles, which is a Jack FM format station

(Richard, you would love it...I think you were the role model for the format; it has a IDGAS response to a lot! and I love JACK FM as well..listen to the original 96.9 CKLW on its web page via the stream; 103.3 is sat fed from Dial Global sat services; only station in the top50 markets can program live...under that, they carry the sat feed..all under contract by the JACK licensee, Sparknet Comm of Canada!)

I was just curious... Wouldn't mind having a translator for KTBZ 94.5 "The Buzz" though...

I got the Channel Master DVR set up at the cabin today. Pretty impressive machine, although the tuner is not as sensitive as I would have liked. Where the Zenith converter box can and will lock on to KPLC, the CM could not, nor could it see channels 27 or 36, but it did find 4, 6, 12, 29, 34, and 43. Good enough for out there. (After the rain this afternoon, I did get some of the Houston stations.) So, with the addition of the CM DVR, we are now restored with HD on all of the channels that broadcast HD. If you remember, the POS Sanyo will not keep multiples of the same PSIP in the channel memory such as 12.1 and 12.2 along with 12.3 and 12.4 from RF 36 and 12.3 and 12.4 from RF 43. It would only retain one set of 12s, the last one it encountered dropping the previous ones.

The CM does come with a manual tuner also much like the one in the Zenith. That is very much appreciated.

I have not recorded with it, but it supposed to be capable of pausing live TV as well as have the ability to record one program while watching another, and while not so relevant now, it does have an analog pass through...

Well dont want it on 103.3.....and to get a NEW translator in operation, you would have to wait for an application window to open and then file for one..THEN hopefully win the auction bidding on the channel in question and then build it...
The 94.7 fill in for 90.5 is another example of WASTE of spectrum by translators just causing more interference...in fact, I think we should file to have the 94.7 signal go off the air (its reach is LESS than its main station and is NOT a fill in in any regards as 90.5 covers anywhere 94.7 does)..hmmmm maybe get 94.7 and 104.9 to swap sites and freqs...then put The Buzz on 104.9...THAT could work...all we gotta do is (OH there goes those infamous 5 words again !) is buy the 94.7 signal (it is licensed to Groves as COL) and then do a swap with KHCB on its 104.9 signal...which actually would be best for them (more separation from the translator and their main signal on 105.7!) AND it would be best for 94.7 AND adj 95.1 as it would put MORE distance between the two (ehhh CC would complain it would cause interference to 95.1 in N BMT...NOT!!!) Hey Im game!!! BUT it would put another Clear Channel signal in the area....NAW, forget it!!!)

I wouldn't want it on 103.3 either. I was coming home from work in LC on Friday and was listening to Jack FM and got major interference from the LPFM in Beaumont as I crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Interrupted a good song too. ..
I just discovered something on my Vizio... While the Vizio will retain the same PSIP from different RF channels (12.3 and 12.4 from RF 36 and RF 43) it WILL NOT retain different PSIPs from the same RF channel... Virtual channel 67 in Houston broadcasts on RF channel 36 as does K36ID (virtual 12.3 and 12.4). Channel 67 was locked in on the TV, but I rolled the antenna back around from pointing at Houston to pointing at our locals. When I flipped down the dial to channel "67", the PSIP immediately reset to "12.3 MYTX" and "67" was gone. Interesting.

OT, but...
Allegiant Airlines has announced twice weekly nonstop roundtrips between Lafayette and Las Vegas. This may be a cheaper, and quicker, route for those attending CES or the NAB conventions.

Not yet, but I will. Too many irons in the fire this week...

We need to file complaints with the FCC on the non-existant yet licensed LP stations around here too. 6, 39, and 49 off the top of my head. And we need to confirm whether or not 4 is on the air also. I show to be within the contour out at the cabin, yet I have never even caught a whif of it...

Ive never seen RF4 from Devers either...and Bob Stroupe, CE of Clear Channel-Houston, who owns the tower, says its news to him!!!!!

Old Gallagher joke about DC10s from one of his earliest Showtime specials filmed in Lake Tahoe....................but I wont repeat it here..I could but I am tired and my hands are hurting...DAMN I hope its not my Blood Pressure going high!)

HHHhhhhmmmm, interesting... KSFX in Springfield, Mo., according to Broadcasting and Cable magazine is going independant, dropping its affiliation with FOX Broadcasting. KSFX is owned by Nexstar, and is one of many that are joining others in the Nexstar family to drop FOX according to the article.

Makes you wonder what lies in store for KBTV doesn't it? With the addition of Bounce TV next month, it makes you wonder if they are posturing to go independant as well...
Is anyone else having reception problems with KFDM? I am getting momentary breakups, minor pixlation, and intermittent garbled audio.

It could be adjacent channel interference... Or co-channel perchance?

UPDATE: By the end of Greg's forecast, it seemed to have cleared up...

I watched Flashpoint and had no issues... I was on the phone for most of CSI, and have just now started watching KFDM again, and I still see no issues any more. Not since the weather... but it was bad at that time. Curious.
