Green tint and audio volume issues seem to have been fixed on PUNCH TV on KAOBs channel 27.4...

Roger Mills, owner of low power channel 6, K06PM-LD, the station that has a License To Cover issued by the FCC, but to my knowledge has never been on the air, has filed a minor change application for a bump up in ERP, going from 300 watts to 500 watts. I am surprised that he did not apply for the fully authorized 3000 watts... But anyway, rumor has it that the station may be actually on its way to getting on the air... There is no indication as to what kind of programming it will carry, however, I heard it might be Spanish language...

If and when it does get on the air, I suppose it will have to identify itself as "channel 66", its former analog channel number because, as we all know, KFDM IDs as "channel 6". Virtual channels are insane...

You will be missed.
There are never enough station engineers on these threads.

Richard, there may be something you want to do before you go... On 9-18-12, the FCC sent out a notice for proposed Construction Permits for new, low power stations. Included in that list was a proposed CP for a low power staion in Beaumont on channel 40. Uh, that's where KBTV sits... So, you might want to get with your buddies at Deerfield Broadcasting to let them know so they can put the kabash on this before it goes any farther... I am not quite sure how it went this far to begin with.

FCC plans are to repack so they don't seem to be paying much attention. Stations moving from Woodville to downtown Houston gives a clue....
Its all procedure anyway...The FCC will accept the proposal and then deny it (gotta get that filing fee wink.gif IF the upper channels go away, repacking as it stands now, would affect 4.1 (40) and 12.3/4 (43) and possibly RF36...just dont see how it gonna happen though...the major markets are packed already...but the FCC doesnt seem to care anymore. It will lead to the death of OTA free TV...next will be radio.

I agree, but am puzzled by very little response by radio.

Clear Channel (Bain group) and Cumulus own most of OTA radio now (leaving CBS/Viacom as the only major original "network" still left as an owner since ABC Radio went to Citadel and now Cumulus)...recently 103.7 and 97.5 were sold after Cumulus has spent millions on both (103.7 was bought from Ben Amato, who still owns 99.7, in Conroe for $32million...then Cumulus spent $5+million on the 2000ft tower NW of Winnie for it). Both were sold for about $5.5 million each. Terrible ROI and the stockholders should be screaming...but they don't. All they care about is short term gains and dividends. Go figure.

Since deregulation, OTA radio and now TV are suffering. Radio stations sell at 20-30x their real value.....and then when they cannot make up the money in ads, they drive it into the ground, file bankruptcy, come out of it still owning the property and it starts all over again. A friend of mine in California predicted the same would start happening to TV stations as well now that the FCC allows duopolys. We will be seeing that here with KBTV and KFDM. I wonder what plans Sinclair has...I have heard mixed stories so I cannot say for sure. I saw the Chief Engineer's posting on a lot of job sites has been removed for KFDM so I guess Sinclair has a replacement for Richard when he retires (and he was only the second Chief there..of course TV has a better track record than radio)

My replacement at KFDM is Jim Hobbs, and his first day on the job will be 10/22/2012.

"Him" Hobbs??? Seems to me that I got publicly chastised for making a typo one time... Unless, of course, his name really is "Him"... wink.gif

I do hope he will frequent these pages as often as you have Richard...

I don't see where you got "Him" Hobbs; it says Jim!!

I really need to find a way to hide the "edited by..." line; or find a way to change the time stamp.

I didn't chastise you; I just pointed out an error! I was chasitsing your keyboard. smile.gif

Well, your "Him" Hobbs is forever etched in my post with your quote... And I am wondering now if I should be "chasitising" your keyboard???

It just keeps getting worse, doesn't it? tongue.gif

My keyboard is just fine, thank you. I believe that the letter switch in Jim's name was caused by a P.I.C.N.I.C. error at the station. Or it might have been and I.D. 10 T error. I will investigate further.

It will get better real soon now. Like next Friday!!!!

Those of you near the Lake Charles area who have been in broadcasting probably knew Jerry Goos, who worked for KPLC, Cumulus, and then Apex Broadcasting.

Just wanted to let you know that he passed away on Sunday, and will be missed.

His obituary is here:

My best to you in your long deserved retirement, Richard. It's been a pleasure.

I second that Richard! It's almost over... May you sleep blissfully through thunderstorms hereafter. Thanks for all your updates and all your help in the early days of the transition, the opportunity to turn off the analog transmitter for the last time, and the tour of the station. Likewise, please don't be a stranger, and if you can, encourage Jim to intrduce himself here on the forum. Thank you, Richard.

Thank you. I will not be a stranger here. Well, I won't be any stranger than I was before I retired.

I look forward to sleeping peacefully with almost no chance of a wakeup call to fix something. I would have to change my home phone number to remove all possibility. smile.gif

I noticed a few changes right away.

(1) I turned in my cell phone since it belonged to KFDM. Later in the day, I tried to call my wife; no phone. I wanted to check the date and time; again no phone. I just might have to get me a cell phone after all.

(2) My keyring is much lighter and I can't find my house key by feel anymore; I have to look for the correct key.

K50LH-D, a low power digital, filed for a license to cover today with the FCC. The tower site is the same as the LD 6 station off East Lucas, however this channel 50 is licensed at 56 watts and 30 meters! Pattern coverage via the FCC web site shows barely making it to College St and I 10..

I saw that too in the Daily Digest and wondered if indeed they really were on the air... I would bet not. Their License To Cover is filed under an ammended app which was originally granted a construction permit for a 15 KW ERP signal. Now it's 56 watts at about 97 feet or so? Really??? 15 KW... 56 watts... Whatever. I am ready for somebody serious about broadcasting TV programming to put something on the air.

KUIL through London broadcasting does a great job. Dowen has the little station that could with KAOB channel 27, and Gershon is supposed to be broadcasting a digital signal for channel 22 which is still analog, but at least carries the RTV network and there's.always channel 9... Other than these, nobody seems interested in broadcasting. Thet get them granted, file for a license to cover, then they sit silent...
3AB has filed an app to move from their flea powered CP (I think it was 30 watts) on channel 34 to channel 13 with an ERP of 2.25 KW. I don't think that can happen though, as the signal will overlap KTRKs signal by several miles. What are these people thinking when they file an app like that???

There still has been nothing done about the new 15 KW CP for channeil 40... HELLO! KBTV?! Anybody awake over there? HELLO?!
