Birmingham, AL - HDTV - Page 5

Couldn't agree more. Whatever it takes - more power? I happened to be home yesterday between 11 and 1pm and the pixelization was pretty constant on APT. Interfered with a very colorful show on glass blowing.

Dow Jones Business News
Charter Communications To Unveil New TiVo-Like Boxes
Wednesday January 7, 3:42 pm ET
By Ellen Sheng, Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Charter Communications is preparing to launch a new digital video recorder in the next two months.
The St. Louis-based cable operator has been working with Digeo Inc., a media software and interactive TV provider started by Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - News) co- founder Paul Allen. Charter, which is also controlled by Allen, will be deploying Digeo's Moxi platform.

The TiVo-like boxes, which allow viewers to record programs, pause and replay live TV, are currently being tested in Rochester, Mich.

Tom Cullen, senior vice president of advanced services and business development who spoke at a Smith Barney Citigroup conference earlier Wednesday, projected the new DVR boxes will be launched in 12 systems this year.

Charter's cable systems are evenly split between technology offered by Scientific-Atlanta and Motorola (NYSE:MOT - News) . Systems running Scientific-Atlanta's technology can't work with Motorola and vice versa. For its Scientific-Atlanta systems, Charter launched the popular Explorer 8000 DVR box in four California systems late last year. Cullen said the Explorer box will be launched in four more markets before the end of the month, and 14 systems during the year. Cullen declined to list what markets, citing competitive reasons.

"We are big believers in personal video recorders," he said.

That's good info..... It jives with info I have received as well. The one I was told is that Charter here will roll out with non-HD DVR's first, with HD ones to follow. I wasn't given a time frame for the HD DVR's, but after a little guessing game, I got the indication that it would be 6 months or less. I never asked when the non-HD DVR's were rolling out.

It is doubtful they will get it done, but they are looking into the possibility of getting ESPN HD launched by March 10, when ESPN begins carrying the Big East and Big Ten Conference Tournaments. My guess is they will launch 3 or 4 days after the games are aired, with Charter missing 12 games broadcast in HD in 5 days.

bearmur: can we get a 33/40 xmitter update?
My email to APT:

Is there anything you can do to cut down on the pixelization? More power?

As info, I live in Pelham, maybe 12 miles from the tower and am picking
you up with a CM 4228 in the attic (no amp) hooked into a Sony KDP-65WS550.

Their reply:
Can't up the power. We will try to give you more bits. wlw

BTW, APT looked much better last night. Watched tribute to George Harrison as much as I could.

With bad weather tower crew is working when they can. They have most of the hangers up for the xmission line. They are working on reinforcement for the antenna now.

bearmur...

Got my CM 2001 VHF in so I am curious to test this VHF signal. Keep up the good work!
...And I'm curious to see how your CM2001 works -- got an attic waiting for an antenna to go in it.

Thanks for the updates. You know you have all of us hanging on your replies now.

I'm getting nothing from 53-1 or 53-2. Is it the time of day or do youse think they are having trouble?

I usually get PBS with few if any dropouts with my indoor antenna ( cheapo uhf/vhf $15 RCA ant1020 from Best Buy).

Seeking opinions:

(see the above message)
With this cheap indoor antenna, I get pretty good signals, but in some weather and at some times of the day, WVTM (nbc) has dropouts. What do you think would happen with an in-line signal amp with this antenna? I know it would help a lot to install an attic or rooftop antenna, but that would involve significantly more effort.

Plus, when these folks increase their power, I'm sure I won't need the more elaborate setups.

bearmur, do you have info about negotiations between 33/40 and Charter? Do they even exist? Anything on the horizon?

Thanks in advance.
Corporate does those negotiations. You know what happens when lawyers get involved.
bearmur.....

Do you have an update on when you think you'll be able to beam a test signal for 5.1?

I wish the moderator would stop deleting my invitation messages to the people of this thread to come and join the new HDTV website I created for Huntsville and Birmingham HDTV viewers. Apparently this person does not want people to leave this thread because he will lose his power of the discussions. They also deleted a message from the engineer of a local CBS station here in Huntsville that was also inviting the people to join because he said he knew all of the other engineer at stations in Birmingham and could get them to post updates and stuff on the new website. To whomever id the moderator of this thread: Please stop deleting my messages and if you wish to become a moderator at the new site for the birmingham discussions, i will consider it, but only if the members agree that they want you to continue.

Hey all Birmingham HDTV Users, I have created a new site for the HDTV viewers of Huntsville and Birmingham. Stop posting to this single thread and come join a site that will have several different topics and thread decdicated to HDTv in Birmingham. We also have Home theater picture galleries, with more stuff coming soon. We started out as a thread on AVS, but got tired of posting to one thread, so we created a entire website. Go to www.tennesseevalleyhd.net and sign up!

Thanks

Ricky, I'm not sure exactly why the moderator deletes your invitations to your website, but I expect that it's because your site seems to compete with AVS Forum for the Alabama readers.

With each of your posts they read like an ad. They can easily be construed as using AVS Forum for advertising purposes. You've obviously been a member of this forum for longer than I, and we certainly appreciate you devoting effort to promoting HDTV in Birmingham/Huntsville. However, I'm not sure if this is the proper place for your announcement.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...
It has to do with it is on page 6 of this thread then they posted it again and it got deleted.
Please don't take it the wrong way. We used this forum for a number of years. The number of differant topics/conversations taking place in a single thread took its toll on us and we decided we need our own forum so we could separate our topics in the same community. I certanly embrace the avsforum its where we started but we out grew it. We are just being a good neighbor and extending the friendship stick since some of our viewers overlap with the Birmingham market. We recently redid our website to accomodate you guys if you want. Our last avsforum thread can be found here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...ght=huntsville
post #138 of 4653
I am sorry, what is on page 6? There is nothing there from me. I admit i posted it twice, but i didn't want to be buried in the thread! But now both of my posts are gone. Also, Brian the CBS engineer also posted an reply that was different from mine, and his post got deleted too. I am trying to help you guys, I want us to all get together and talk about HDTV at our own site! I can pickup WIAT from my house here in FLorence, and I plan on trying to get 33/40 when it come online. Alot of people in Huntsville can get birmingham stations. That is why we are is inviting the birmingham "gang" to our website. That is all I want.

A PM to the moderator to ask if you can post a link etc. goes a very long way. Maybe ask the mod. if you could start another thread about Huntsville locals and short link to the other site. As that would cover more "in depth" info.

Since there are SOOO many members they just don't care for links all over the place.

A mention of Huntsille and link to the AVS thread is fine to me but we have "Birmingham" in the title. Kind of helps cut down on the number of posts the I have ti read but don't care much about.

Don't get me wrong, please post as we are all in this for better quality and to learn from others.

Tower crew said 3 weeks. I will post when we go live. I have my amp & antenna ready to put up too.
3 weeks from today?
No way to be that exact. But I was told 3 weeks from yesterday. If only the tower company had shipped reenforcement for a 10' tower face instead of a 8'. New steel will come next week. A lot of pitfalls can pop up before then.

thanks for your quick reply

ESPNHD is on the Charter program guide as channel 773. Since I don't subscribe to the HD package I can't confirm there is anything there. Can someone take a look?

NBC (OTA) appears to be down again. No picture; no sound.

I don't think i am making myself clear. We had a huntsville thread here at avs, we outgrew it, wanted more topics, etc. So i created a place so that huntsville had their own forum, not just a thread. Everyone came, we had over 170 users. We had general managers, engineers, local ISF guys. Now I have updated the website and with the additional bandwith and storage I have, I have created a forum for Birmingham users as well, I am just offering you guys the chance to have your own forum, with your own set of topics and more like picture galleries and chat. I love avs, i come here all the time to read about hdtv programming on a national scale, but one thread is hard to navigate for all of the local stuff that is happening. That is why i created the board for huntsville users, and that is why I am trying to create a board for you guys here in birmigham.

Yes, ESPNHD is on Charter under channel 773. It must have just come up late this evening. Damn, good work boys. This is just in time for Duke vs. North Carolina Saturday night.

Thanks for thinking of us in Birmingham! I am very happy here at AVS and I like the people here. I can only speak for myself but I think we are doing ok with info from this thread.

The person to thank is Bham Slugger. It is amazing what happens when you call the right people!

Slugger - looks like my playbook was decent, huh?
