That's really good news. I assume that means that we should be getting a signal sometime next week. Please let us know when ya'll intend to lite the candle. Thanks again for keeping us up to speed during this process.

Thanks again for all the updates and putting up with my 33/40 rants. I am glad that you participate here and you are an HD nut like the rest of us. If I am able to pull in the VHF 5 signal - I will not have a lot to complain about - and I am looking forward to that!

I think I found a more incompetant support group, Nextel! Off topic but at least Charter isn't at the top of the list anymore.

Signals have been good in Montevallo for some time except for Fox which must have reduced their signal strength. I never saw anyone post anything to the questions about Fox's signal.

Thx bearmur for the update.

I got my antenna up today. I put a cm 4228 UHF with a Radio Shack 15-2158 into a cm7777 preamp on a 50 foot tower. I am ready for Harris.

I recently picked up a Samsung tuner in Birmingham... Any suggestions for an antenna (indoor) for apartments?

I was thinking about the Phillips PM-HDTV1. It looks exactly like the Zenith ZHD-TV1. I can get the Phillips much cheaper mail order and was thinking about getting the ZEN-AA1 amplifier too. Then again, you folks might know something that could be better for the Hoover area.

Thanks in advance.
Cheers....

I guess we are going live soon. Big B finally did the antenna install! ABC HD this week? awesome!

BTW - are any NBA games HDTV?
I can't recall if this has already been covered, but as I understand it, the ABC HD broadcast will be VHF. Is there a VHF antenna model stocked at Home Depot or Radio Shack that is recommended for reception in the Valleydale and 280 area? What is the likelihood of my existing CM 4228 pulling it in? I'm guessing slim to none not only due to VHF but also the direction but thought I'd check.

Does anyone know what the power output will be for the new digital ABC channel 5 when it become live!

Thanks

This is from the FCC web site. Bearmur, please correct this if changes have been made.

Effective Radiated Power (ERP): 9.50 kW ERP
Ant. Height Above Average Terrain (HAAT): 625.4 meters HAAT

That is correct, but the computer models show 110% of the full power UHF. The antenna pattern is toward B'ham. A vhf antenna will be required. It will work better outside.
Is there any chance of 5 going live tomm?
Heck, I'll just take this week!
Anyone catch the article in the Sunday's Bham news? It mentions several new stations planning to go live this year. Pretty good summation of HD especially in Bham.
Hey, sledford, how about PM'ing me? I have some questions about your OTA. I think we live in the same area. Thanks.

Anybody got a good recommendation for a long range vhf antenna. I am located in killen, close to florence in northern alabama and I thought I might give it a shot to pick up ABC out of birmingham.

Thanks

The 2158 (btw, is that 150-2158), what is the cost of that, and how do you combine that with the 4228 (I have the same) Thanks
post #258 of 4653
No. It is an old vhf antenna. Nearest antenna now is 15-2156. It is UHF/VHF. I used the cm 7777 preamp to combine. The xmitter high voltage [50v] power supplies failed {smoked}. They will be repaired tomorrow. We are checking about program authority. I will post when power is going into the air.

Does anyone know if we in the Birmingham area will be able to watch Thursday and Friday coverage of the Masters in HD? TitanTV says no, but they are not always correct. Can't find any mention of it on WIAT website.
I put a call into WIAT so we'll see.

What is program authority?
I got a call back from WIAT and they will be carrying full coverage of the Masters on thurs and friday in HDTV.
Thanks Brad! I will be watching.
Brad:

I was wondering about the program authority question as well. Do you think the local ABC would have to get authority from the network to carry the digital signal?

Tom
From FCC.
Bearmur:

You've mentioned that dealing with the FCC has been quite a pain thus far in transition to digital. Is getting program authority an ordeal or is it a fairly efficient process?

bearmur...

So is the tower now ready? What is the timeframe for flipping the switch?

As always - thanks for the info!
Fairly efficient. I will post when I know more. We are ready to go on when we get the OK.
Channel 5 will go on Monday.

Bearmur:

That's great. Thanks for keeping us in the loop. My antenna is up and ready for reception.
