You might find this
to be a good resource. While BH should have the tuning adaptor by now, I doubt they do. They seem to be extremely behind the curve. The TA is used for any channels that are SDV. Last spring they followed an approach taken in Tampa of just not giving cc customers the new HD channels so they wouldn't have to take them away when they went SDV. Classy. I was told by an engineer there they went SDV, but found out later I was lied to. The tech I knew at the time said they were planning to go to SDV, but that it would be a ways off.
Everyone there hates cablecards and will give you some guff. There was one tech there that knew what he was doing named 'Donny', you can try to request him if he still works there. He is the only person I ever talked to that had a clue. When every other tech hit a dead end with a cablecard they would always call him. Some of the common things you might need to request to get things working are 'rehitting' the cards and 'balancing' the cards. I had to have those done multiple times to resolve issues. Honestly, most of the time it has very little to do with the tech you've got and everything to do with the person they call on the head end. If the head end is clueless, you are stuck. Donny was good b/c he knew who to talk to on the head end (and how to get them what they should if needed) and used due diligence to eliminate potential problems.
I went to analog just b/c I didn't want to give up my Tivo, but at the same time I needed BH to have the minimal amount of responsibility possible as they never ceased to lower the bar for customer service and competence. I realize this won't work for you, but just wanted to impart that you could be in for some work to get things working properly.
Where is the potential retirement home? There are several Tivo HD users here with Charter who seem to be happy. If it's in their area, you are probably in for a much easier transition...
Thanks very much! Update: Another tech, of course not the promised "expert," was there today. So another's coming out in the morning. Today's tech said Reginald is an expert, but they aren't promising him. We will ask whoever it is to check with Donny.
Good news is that BH has had the equipment, even they don't know it. They said they didn't have "any" M-cards, but brought one on first install. They didn't know about tuning adapters last week, but brought one today. (However, the tech neglected to install the USB cable. He swore it wasn't needed, even when talking to the head end for about an hour trying to resolve the problems. The head end also insisted he did NOT need to see the missing-&-needed TiVo screen that indicates the tuning adapter is mapping the channels; they said that screen wasn't necessary "with a TiVo." When he put me on the phone to tell them the TiVo website said the install was no good if it didn't appear, he got into trouble. So someone else is coming out in the morning. I went ahead & added the USB after he left, & the "mapping" screen finally appeared.)
With today's tuning adapter install, we now (for now, anyway) have formerly missing chs. 672 & 673 (Bravo & CNBC) in HD. A few minor channels are missing, as are all of the music channels. The tech said that no one with TiVo is getting the music ones.
Some of the May 26 & June 2 channel reassigns mentioned on BH's site have not gone through. Fox News, Travel, AMC & a few others are involved in HD adds, deletes, & new-to-SDV as of this week, but a few are blank & a few are still on their former numbers. Once the reassigns are done, we may know what we have.
We haven't had time to compare post-tuning-adapter audio drop-outs on digital versus analog.
Besides asking for Donny, we'll ask about "rehitting" & "balancing" the cards. Yes, who the techs talk to is critical. Our techs have been very diligent, apologetic & hard-working, while being misinformed by the head end.
We'll also ask if BH supplies for free their Smart Box (digital tuner adapter) for a 2nd room to TiVo customers who don't get paid-for channels. We'd like to have the music channels, even if they're not up to the great DirecTV/Sirius/XM ones.
Good to hear that Charter with TiVo HD may work well! We were under the impression that Charter in general was not much/any better than Brighthouse. One retirement community is in Irondale (& has Charter now) but another is in B'ham (which means BH?).
Anyone know of a site with customer satisfaction results for the various cable companies, locally or nationally?
