San Francisco, CA - OTA - Page 14

I noticed one thread back a few months ago asking for advice on any "pro" installers in the San Francisco area, but didn't see any replies. I live in the West Portal area about 3 miles from Sutro. Unfortunately there are several very large hills between the tower and our house and we actually do not have a view of the tower. I tried a basic indoor antenna (Terk, yeah I know but couldn't find the Silver Sensor at a B&M) and received only one channel on my LG LST3510 (PAX, woo hoo!). So it looks like maybe a roof install is necessary. Would a clip on to my D* dish fit the bill? Most channels indicate red from antennaweb.org. My problem is, no ladder and no real desire to climb up there anyway.

So, does anyone have a recommendation for an installer in or around SF? I'd love to have something up on the roof by New Years to watch the NFL playoffs in HD!

Thanks,
Dave

Has anyone tried the walmart US Digital HDTV tuner in San Jose area ? The model is DB-2010. I see there are plenty on ebay for under $100. I already have LG LST 4200a for my HDTV. I was thinking to get another HDTV tuner for my old 27" TV so kids can watch digital quality Yugioh :-)

Thanks

Finally got my CM4228 installed and I've got a lot better reception on many stations, but I've got 0 signal for 44-1 today. I previously had a directional yagi and got 44-1 fine, so I'm hoping the reason I'm getting 0 signal is that KBHK is not broadcasting for some reason today (Sun, 12/12/04).

Oddly, I've lost 48-1,48-2 (not that I watch them). The CM4228 is supposed to be less directional than the yagi I replaced, but that antenna pointed at 305 deg, got 48-1, 48-2 fine. Antenna web says that transmitter is at 350 degrees from my house, so I guess I could try aiming off of 305 towards 350 to see if I can get a signal.

It sounds like the 4228 is a bit more directional than what you had. More gain=more directional. Most of the SFs will come in to the west of Mt. Allison (where you're aimed for 14, 36 and 48). You might want to invest in a rotator.

Carl

Anyone have thoughts on whether off-aiming might help my other signals from Sutro? Maybe help with multipath or something? I think my next step will be to add the CM7775 pre-amp and see if that helps the 2-1/4-1 signal quality.

This is correct. CBS currently has DD 5.1 stream during selected sporting or live events only. Their prime time programming is 2.0. Depending on your receiver, you can get both of those streams to produce a Dolby Pro Logic output to utilize all your speakers.

Got an update. CSI: Miami TONITE will be the first CBS show with 5.1,

I seriously doubt the gain pattern on the CM4228 is MORE directional than the yagi it replaced, but who knows. A rotor doesn't help me, since I record many HD shows when I'm not around and the HDTV Tivo can't control a rotor.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Does ABC (7-1) broadcasts in DD 5.1 and CBS (5-1) broadcasts in DD2.0 ?
I'm feeding my receiver the optical output from the LG LST 4200A HDTV tuner. When I listen to ABC, I see a dolby digital 5.1 stream. And I can only select either dolby digital or dolby virtual in my receiver (Sherwood 6108). And thats what it states in the manual that only these two modes are available in DD5.1 input.

But when I watch CBS, I have option to chose Dolby Prologic and Prologic II (and II's various formats, such as Matrix, Music, Movie, Custom, etc). As per the receiver manual, when the input is dolby digital 2 channels, these schemes can be selected.

Now I'm confused. I thought the HD programs were all in Dolby Digital 5.1 ? I'm talking about CBS's CSI:NY vs. ABC's Lost, both are in HD. All HD shows of CBS are in DD2.0 and all HD ABC shows are in DD 5.1.

Is it right assumption or am I missing something completely (may be need to select something on my tuner) ?

Thanks

Mudit

Last night, CBS showed CSI Miami for the first time with 5.1 surround sound. Awesome! I don't know about other CBS shows, but my guess is that they will soon be with 5.1, if not already.

Carl,

Yes I saw that too ! CSI Miami was in DD 5.1 ! And I'm thinking, someone must be reading our forums :-)

Thanks to whomever who made it possible for us to listen it in DD 5.1 !

Are these shows recorded in DD5.1 ? Or just the station chose to broadcast it either in DD2.0 or DD5.1 ?

Thanks

See the thread link I posted above, CSI:Miami is the first and only so far, but Bob Ross indicated that more are on the way..

Tonight I couldn't get Channel 7-1 or 7-2 (ABC) anymore. I"m freaking out - must have Lost (and Alias in Jan) in HD. Then after surfing I find ABC on Channel 24-1 and 24-2. What gives with this? Is this a permanent change?
Also can't get UPN44-1 tonight.
In San Jose, 7-1 and 7-2 are fine. LG LST 4200A and CM 4228.
44-1 has been down since 2-3 days. Search for tvgeek5 posts.

The guide data for the HDTV Tivo has been wrong for 7-1 & 7-2 since Friday. Does your receiver show the correct info for 7-1 (i.e. Lost, etc.)? My receiver' guide info shows ABC network shows on 7-2, but they are actually being shown on 7-1.

I live in Richmond in the East Bay. I receive my HD OTA with my ancient rabbit ears (have a clear view of Sutro tower). Last night ABC appeared on either Channel 24-1and 24-2 or it may have been 24-2 and 24-3. One of these was the HD channel and the other the ABC news channel. Channel 7-1 and 7-2 were gone.

According to the antennaweb site, ABC in the bay area transmits on channel 24. If the station isn't transmiting its PSIP, then your receiver might just use the actual frequency the signal was received on (i.e. 24).

In response to Channel 7/24:

The following was posted on the SF HDTV Yahoo Group yesterday ( groups.yahoo.com/group/HDTV-in-SFbay/ )

Expect to have to re-boot your receivers and/or do a new channel scan
as broadcasters reconfigure their DTV Encoders in coming weeks to
comply with the following requirement:

January 1, 2005 Effective Date for Implementation of Updated ATSC
Standard

In 2002, a change to ATSC standard A/53 was adopted which prohibits
the use of MPEG-2 Packet Identifiers (PID) in the range below 0x0030
effective January 1, 2005. As of that date using these values will be
prohibited by the FCC rules (since compliance with A/53C is now
required by the Rules) and broadcasters must not use PID values below
0x0030. Be advised that field experience with some receivers
indicates that changes in PID values and/or program numbers
can "confuse" some DTV sets, resulting in consumer calls. Don't
forget to insure that all equipment (e.g., video encoders,
multiplexers and PSIP generator) is using the same values for each
component when you make the change. Broadcasters can make this change
any time before January 1, 2005.

Ok, what's going on with KGO(ABC)? I don't get HD on 7-1, 7-2, 24-1, 24-2.
I saw Lost on 7-1 last night (LG LST 4200A).
I have been having the same problem, good signal strength on the signal strength meter, no actual broadcast, I tried deleting the channels and re-aquiriing them but it didn't work. When I punched in 24-1 and 24-2 it took me to 7=1 and 7-2 but no signal. I called abc but got some recordings and I have an Hitachi brand tv and wonder if this is a tuner issue or what?
Both 7-1 & 7-2 come up as KGO SD in the channel guide and both show the same show. Normally KGO 7-1 shows up as KGO HD. I have a 1st generation Toshiba DST-3000 receiver that has always worked great in the past. I need to contact the engineer at KGO and ask what they've done recently to screw things up. I have the number at home but I'm at work. Can someone post the contact number? Thanks in advance!

I'm in the same boat and called the station and left a message with a tech mail box but haven't been called back yet,
Called Hitachi and they said they would send me a flash card upgrade but I don't think that's the problem. ABC has always been flawless in the past so let's keep posting here and feel free to e:mail me if you wish. I was thinking of trying an outboard receiver and bypass the built in Hitachi unit.
My previous post was wrong about which channels ABC now appears on. They are 24-3 and 24-4. I hope I got it right this time.

Keith, I've been receiving ABC in HD for years and this is the first time I've had this problem. It seems to have started on Tuesday(12/14) because I remember watching MNF. I only get ABC on 7-1 & 7-2 and the program is the same for both channels, the nationwide news. I also called and left a message yesterday but I have not yet heard back from them. It's very frustrating to say the least.
I would also suggest that if anyone posts in response to this issue, please tell us what receiver model/brand you are using. Thanks again!

I have a Hitachi 51S700 Ultravision that is 11 months old with a built in tuner. Nobody is calling back. I remember getting Monday night football as well, so we have the same time frame, different tv's and tuners and the same problem. Obviously ABC has changed something in their broadcasting framework. I've called abc as well with no response.
I've LG LST4200A tuner. 7-1 and 7-2 are fine and still coming at the same place. So, I don't think every tuner is facing same problem. Unless the LG is smart enough to an internal mapping ?
I have a new Panny plasma with a built in tuner. It found ABC on 24-3(HD) and 24-4 (ABC News channel)as I posted previously after 7-1 and 7-2 disappeared.
I have two tuners -- an RCA DLP, and an Elgato EyeTV 500. The TV continues to work with 7-1; the Elgato stopped receiving it entirely. They told me to re-run "Auto Tune," which I did. At that point, it showed up as ch. 66 (and their news subchannel as 67). Looking at the auto-tune log, I see that the KGO entries are:

04:04:19.276 66 533000000 LCN:0/0 BID:0x0000 Pri:0xFFFFFFFF 'kgo hdtv'
04:04:19.276 67 533000000 LCN:0/0 BID:0x0000 Pri:0xFFFFFFFF 'kgo news ch'

The "LCN:0/0" I assume means "Logical Channel Number" or somesuch -- and KGO is the only one that has 0/0 there. All the others have what I would expect (e.g., 11/1 for KNTV).

I assume that is the problem.
