New York, NY - RCN - Page 15

We in NYC/RCN/Manhattan/Digital Rebuild can get about 50 (listed in this thread, #401) "clear and free" QAM channels, but there's no guarantee that RCN will continue to provide them, other than the FCC mandated 4 networks...and we'll see if they abide by that anyway.

Another bonus is that there's at least 10 HD channels, some in 1080i.

I called up 800-RING-RCN and asked for "customer retention." Then they'll transfer you to "Local Care." It must be M-F, 8-5. I managed to squeeze a free box, pay only $1.50 for the lousy Cable Card I needed for my TiVo, and reduce my bill 30% from the huge retail increases that have been place just in the last few months.

Let me know how you fare!

If anyone from RCN monitors this forum HBO Zone HD on 704 and HBO Comedy HD on 705 are being transmitted in SD. Also the Islanders game on MSG Plus 2 which was supposed to be broadcast on the MSG Plus overflow channel 31 last night was not.

did they just remove National Geographic HD? It used to be on 37-3... Any one else still able to get it?

Is it available on SD? (480)?

I am also missing it with my digital cable card tuner.
Yes, it's gone for me, too. and unless someone hunts methodically through, I don't think we'll see the SD version thru QAM. I never found an SD version my first run-thru.

I had an RCN tech come by my place (Southern Manhattan) on Saturday to install me on a new Tivo HD. I'm a TWC refugee and this is my first cable card experience. I told him that he should probably be using only one MCC, but he went ahead and installed 2. I can't access most of my HD and many of my digital channels. In the diagnostics menu, neither of my CCs were validated. I called the RCN 800 number and their techs said everything was fine on their end and that I contact Tivo. I'm scheduled to have another RCN tech to come by and reinstall on Saturday.

What should I insist that he do, so that he doesn't screw up this install as well?

National Geo HD is back on the original channel... whew!

Here at 99 John (Fin. Dist.) we are converted.
Our building finally went all digital yesterday with analog crush.
However it was impossible for me to find the new channel lineup with tivo.

I tried numerous other nearby zip codes but none of them were showing the "RCN Digital Rebuild Extended Basic" lineup.
After reading on various posts on the tivocommunity forum someone said that once you are at the Cable Provider Screen select "RCN Digital" then at the bottom of the screen it says "press Enter for Advanced settings" do this and you will see the Rebuild options.

I hope this helps someone looking for their new channel lineups!

How long ago did it happen? Hopefully, that means they'll get to 200 Water soon.

I just switched from TWC, but it's been at least a month that we were switched.
Noticed yesterday, maybe earlier, they added some of the channels listed earlier as "to come": SCFIHD, USAHD, BravoHD(?), perhaps others, here at midtown eastside. All appeared on my guide but only SCIFIHD was viewable; others had that familiar temp not in service message. Added RCN to my 31-HD channel TWC lineup in mid-October. Guess I'll drop one or the other after seeing what TWC delivers finally, then add an extra DVR. -- John
post #435 of 592
I've also noticed the addition of SciFi HD, USA HD, Bravo HD, and CNBC HD for the past week...but USA HD and Bravo HD have not been activated yet as it keeps showing the 'temporarily off air' message...SciFi HD and CNBC HD work fine
post #436 of 592
Finally called C.S. yesterday about Bravo and USA HDs still showing "temp off air" messages for ~1 week. After some tinkering they confirmed those two still weren't available here. Wish they'd just leave the guide blank for these instead of showing non-available programming. -- John
post #437 of 592
Did anybody else notice that a grainy picture during the Jets/Dolphins game (Channel 602 CBSHD)? I previously had TWC and I remember seeing a much crisper picture.
^^^Only caught snippets of the game, but it looked okay here (midtown, east). Seemed dull looking, perhaps mostly from the overcast sky. Getting both TWC and RCN currently and can't say they're significantly different in HD PQ, including CBS, (to a 9"-gun 64" CRT RPTV @8'). -- John

USA HD and Bravo HD are now active and working!!...yipee!!...not only that but RCN has also added MLB HD on channel 695 (with the standard def MLB on channel 391)...RCN is really doing a nice of job of adding HD channels now!
They are adding channels at a nice clip, but they aren't updating TMS (the US TV listings) with the changes. I've been submitting tickets to TMS and TiVo to add the channels as they come online, but only one (Universal HD) has been accepted. RCN is telling TMS that WGN HD, Sci Fi HD and all the other recents are "N/A".

Anyone know the qAM channel for USA HD and the HBO Channel? I receive digital cable without the rcn box and have signed up for the free 3 months of HBO but cannot find it.

You need a cable box or a cable card for both USA HD and HBO.
QAM digital, OTA (over-the-air) digital, and RCN digital are all different. Currently, RCN is not providing USA-HD through QAM. And there are no premium, scrambled channels through RCN's QAM delivery.

However, USA-SD is 56-3 for RCN-NYC.

P.S. Better keep tabs on that HBO billing...you cannot receive HBO w/o a cable card or set-top box!

I don't think that's exactly correct. OTA digital is definitely different from QAM (OTA reception uses your TV's ATSC tuner, not its QAM tuner). But all RCN digital service is QAM.

The distinction isn't between QAM digital and RCN digital. It's between so-called "clear" QAM and encrypted or scrambled QAM.

Your TV's built-in QAM tuner can only receive the unencrypted "clear" QAM channels. The scrambled channels (including all the "pay" movie channels like HBO and Showtime and the HD versions of many "basic cable" channels) are sent over the wire using the QAM technology, too, but you'll need a set top box (STB) or cable card device (some TVs actually have cable card slots built in, as do Tivo brand DVRs) to descramble the signal so it can be displayed on your TV.

At least that's how I understand it. I'm sure somebody will correct me in turn if I'm wrong, too.

Is anyone else's WWORDT (709) not working?
RCN just called to tell me I need a converter box because I am paying for service I'm not receiving. I explained that my TV has a digital tuner and continues to work fine post analog crush (which happened in October in my building) with enough channels to make me happy. I'd only accept a box if they'd send it for free because I don't want to pay more for cable than I do now. She said we were going to be shut off after January if we didn't pay for a box. I told her I'd think about it and call back later.

It wasn't clear when she said we'd be "shut off" if she meant that they'd shut off our account because they aren't going to keep open accounts that don't have cable boxes, or if she meant they were altogether doing away with clear QAM programming on their feed.

Anybody else get a call like this? I'm inclined to just do nothing and see if our service actually changes. If it does, I think I may just cancel it.
LOL they're idiots. If they don't provide QAM clear, I'm going to switch to FIOS where I won't have to "rent" the damn box.

So I take it SciFi-HD is going to be for pay box folks only? I'm still really pissed they got rid of SciFi channel in SD on their basic cable. Now I have to watch Battlestar Galactica one day after it airs online...

I'd like to hear more about FiOS's quality, e.g. compression of HD channels and reports of dropouts, blockiness, and sound problems. I have heard that FiOS uses aggressive compression for some "low-demand" channels, such as Discovery, etc. in order to save bandwidth to make some sporting events, etc. "better" HD.

Any popcorn gallery comments from those with HDTVs?

THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS CUSTOMER SERVICE!

They cannot require you to have a box as long as you pay for whatever tier of service you decided upon. However, if you talk to "Local Care" (you must specify you will only talk to "Local Care"), they will likely send you a box for FREE.

I negotiated my old box for free when I got a TiVo with cable card, and refused to pay an extra $5.95 for a the box I had if I was going to pay $1.50 for the card. They said fine. Again, only Local Care can make these decisions.

You need to approach it from an "I'm going to switch" perspective, and it's amazing how receptive they become. Be nice and firm!

Also, you already realize that you will be paying for some scrambled channels not received via free-and-clear QAM, and some of the free-and-clear channels will change or get removed. But it's a pretty hefty list right now.

Unfortunately, FIOS penetration in the NYC area is very limited. And the FIOS channel selection widely varies from locality to locality. So it is very hard to determine what the NYC picture quality and bit rates are.

That said, I've seen FIOS in Virginia. The PQ was excellent. There wasn't blockiness, but there were occasional complete losses of picture. Was that Verizon's fault or the network's fault? Don't know.
