Return to "live"??

How do I exit the Replay Guide, the Channel Guide, the main Menu, or Zones to go back to Live TV? None of the buttons on the remote seem to do it, short of going to the channel guide and selecting the current channel. The "Exit" button just doesn't do it, though it works to "Exit" other areas.

The problem with returning to live via the Channel guide is that it causes a channel-change on my Dish Network box (even though I'm going to the same channel I'm already on) and THAT causes the buffer to clear. I can't rewind back past the point of when I selected the channel.

I know I'm probably missing something REALLY basic here, but it's frustrated me enough times to finally write and ask because I haven't figured it out by myself!

The "Return to Live" button generally gives me the message "This is a recorded show. Cannot return to live."

The circumstances for this usually happens when I've been watching a recorded show and it ends. I'll either delete the show, or return to the Channel guide, where I can hear the current "live" audio in the background. Sometimes I want to drop to live so I can rewind and watch what should be in the buffer. I understand I can't capture the buffer like I can with my Tivo (yes, I have both)....but what good is this huge-mongous buffer if I can't get back to live TV without clearing the buffer??

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!

I think if you press the same button again it will revert. For example, while in the channel guide, press "channel guide" and it should leave.

Nope...no go. For example, right now I'm looking a the frozen last frame of a show that has finished playing. Pressing the Channel guide button let me go to the guide without answering the "Delete Show" or "Play another recorded show" dialog. Pressing Channel guide again took me back to the frozen last frame, complete with the square "stop" icon in the bottom right corner.

How do I drop back to "live" from this point without making a Channel Guide selection and causing a channel change?? That's the 64$ question!

You are clearly missing something. If it is a recorded show ...NO you can't return to live, press Channel Guide and pick a channel.

In ANYTHING press the same button to toggle OFF. Or Exit Or another button ...Say you are in Replay Guide, and you press Channel Guide ....it will go to Channel Guide.

As far as ZONES ...... switching is the same, but I never found a use for it, so I think I will start a new thread just for that.

i forgot other issues you asked about, so I will reply again if needed.... for now, My closed caption is screwed again ...so I got to go to that thread

If you are on a buffered show ....... just press channel guide again to turn it off

If you just got this, it will take geting used to, you'll figure it out.

Exit SHOULD work ...if not call Malasia or wherever. LOL

If you select the SAME channel ...buffer should keep ...at least on Showstopper ... the wose that can happen is it returns to live, and SHOULD be able to rewind to the first time you went to that channel.

ReplayTV only buffers live TV when you're watching live TV, it doesn't do it while you're watching a recorded show.

Ah, there's the answer. I wasn't missing anything...it just can't be done. That's a shame too, I'm really disappointed because it's something that I use quite a bit on my old series 1 Tivo.

It really is interesting owning both Tivo and Replay. Each has it's own unique features and solutions!

Actually, someone found this trick, and I've been meaning to add it to the support site, because it was the first time I heard of it.

To return to live, hit 0 and then press select. It always tunes to livetv. So, if you're at the end of a recorded show, or you want to check out livetv and you just finished watching a recorded show, it's a quick way to jump to livetv.

My sister in law is in town. She's a Tivo-ite. She complained about the very same thing.

She hasn't complained about Commercial Skip yet. ;) She was also impressed with the "unlimited" buffering of live TV. I think Tivos are limited to 30 minutes.

This does not work on my ShowStopper nor my ReplayTV 3060.

However, you can just hit Channel-Up or Channel-Down and it will go to live TV on the last live TV channel, at least on the ShowStopper and ReplayTV 3K.

This works on my 4508, but only because '0' is not a valid channel on my digital cable box, and so it then goes back to the previously selected cable channel, regardless of whatever the last tuned channel was.

What works better for me is, at the end of show "Show Stopped" dialog, is simply to press [Recall]. That takes me back to the previous "show", whether that was live or recorded. Of course it has not been recording in the background, so you can't rewind to catch live stuff you've missed.

I have never understood why the "return to live" button doesn't take you to live TV no matter what you are watching. Wouldn't this be logical?

AMEN TO THAT! I've poked that button a hundred times on my remote and all I get is a stoopid message saying "This is a recorded show. Can't return to live."

The "0" select doesn't work on my 5040 either...

It's particularly confusing to someone that learned Tivo first, and then got a Replay like myself. With Tivo you can press a button a drop back to live at any time, and you can rewind back to the limit of the 30 minute buffer. That's VERY handy at times, especially when you drop to live and discover something interesting is on that you want to see the start of.

Replay definitely has it's plusses. I really like the ethernet interface...and the IVS show sharing has saved me several times on shows that got missed for various reasons! Plus, when you add the ease of pulling shows to your computer via DVArchive it really gives a whole new dimension to the practicality of a DVR. Yeah, I could delve into geekdom and do the stuff to make my S1 Tivo do the same, but it's so much easier with Replay. I view the Replay as my "versatile toy" whereas the Tivo is my "faithful workhorse" that rarely lets me down. (Replay lets me down a lot, particularly because it doesn't have a "Recording History" feature like the Tivo to tell me IF it's going to skip a recording, and why, or why it did skip a recording. Replay really needs a good "log" like that. Or am I missing something??!)

Cool, it works great on my 5000 machines. Thanks BrianJohns for creating this thread. As far as you said the Tivo can rewind back 30 minutes, it's buffor, the Replay can go back many hours in it's buffer. A recording log would be nice. Since I have more than one Replay, I don't miss anything anymore because if there is a conflict, the other Replay records instead. I love that my kids can be watching something in our family room and I can ask them to go upstairs to finish what they were watching.

You are missing something. ReplaySchedule does what you want. It appreas that DVArchive v3 will do that as well. Check them out.

"Return to Live" should have been called "Catch Up" -- all it does is jump forward to the current time when watching live TV delayed.

Just to make sure everyone is straight this one..

If you are both watching a previously recorded show awhile recording a current show you can press <'0' button> <select button> and you will jump from watching the previously recorded show to the currently recording show (LIVE). You can do the same thing by pushing <channel guide button> <select button>.

If you are recording a current show and watching a previously recorded show, and then the previously recorded show gets to the end and the menu pops up, you can at that point still push <'0' button> <select button> to jump away from the finished previously recorded show menu to the presently recording show(Live).

It's hard to describe in writting without the description becoming convoluted, but if you read hard, you should understand.

btw, if you are watching a previously recorded show pushing <return to live button> will not take you to the end of the recording and pop up the 'end of show' menu. You can, however, push <'0' button> <return to live button> to do this. This works because if you push <'5' button> <return to live button> when watching a previously recorded show you will be moved to 5 min before the show ends. Thus <'0' button> <return to live button> moves you to 0 min before the shows ending, thus the end.

I'll leave it there

hope this keeps things cleared up
