rad-"Don, sorry, but I seem to remember E* making MANY 'announcments' as to when the 921 would be out. Just a quick search of one site found this thread http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.p...4&highlight=921 with comments about the recent team summit. In a post from 4/23/2002 there's the comment: 721 in late May (In limited supply)
921 at the end of the year or early next year
E* never did make a hard date, they just kept using very vauge dates like end of such and such quarter to drag people on. Since I've been back in the D* camp only for a couple of months I wasn't following the HD Tivo progress as closely as the 921's but I don't remember D*/Tivo playing as fast and loose with availability dates, I may be wrong but I don't remember them being anywhere near as bad as E*."
Don't need to search the internet for rumors of announcements. I kept my own log.
The first one was in January at CES2002 made by an Eldon rep who was the only one talking about the 921. Prediction was September 2002 as ready to ship.
The next one was in August of 2002- made by an ETC employee to me in an e-mail- "Available by the Holiday buying season"
In November he sent me an update announcing that the 921 was going back to R&D for marketing changes, that is to add additional tuner capacity, *PSK modifications and a new chassis design to enable field hardware expansion. Also beef up flash ram for full software upgrade. The new prediction would be sometime summer of 2003. In April 2003, it was announced on the internet that May of 2003 it would be ready. I also obtained info that 200 units were produced and an attempt at 50 betas were slated in March but not enough employees capable of doing the beta. My source for this is confidential. May came and went and no word. Some reported it would be out by Holiday shopping season again for the second year. Dec 23 was hardly 2003 shopping season as even then it was rumored that the supply was only 1 unit per week to the warehouses until week of CES2004 when that number was increased to 10 per week and then in February it was put on QA hold to fix a large number of units with defective parts that cause many of the recent shipped 921's to need return for repair. Mine was not one of the units that had the analog problem. Mine was also NOT one of the ones that had telephone modem trouble. Mine works fine. It works better than this computer I am using right now.
Since the original reference was to Charlie Chats announcements, I was referring to how Charlie did the announcements which was "tune in next month...". Most of the rest of the announcements were on the internet or otherwise unofficial as in my e-mails.
Anyway, it doesn't matter to me because I have one and don't care how other want to rewrite the facts. If it makes them happy, I'm happy for them. I know what I went through to get one and it was worth the trouble. It just took a conference call to get the liars to admit the game they were playing and apologize and commit to sending me the next week's 921 allocation. I don't expect to go through the same problem with the TIVO as it will just be a 'me too' DVR here so when it comes it comes. I've had it on preorder from my dealer since 3rd week of January. I was told by the D* and TIVO reps that I would have it through that dealer on April 1st, which we all laughed about when I commented that was April Fool's day.
