Atlanta, GA - OTA - Page 89

[quote=markqct;17239022]I just received this email from WSB-TV.

"I am pleased to announce that we have resumed full digital over-the-air power from our transmitter site.

Thanks for the update Mark

I am 30 to 40 miles outside of the Atlanta coverage area. I receive 5, 8, 17, 46, with little to no interruption, but 2 has never been available long enough to watch. I am receiving their signal today, but is not steady. My main concern through this "ordeal" has been for my niece in Jefferson, (well within their coverage area), They have been in and out at her house ever since the "switchover". I sent her an email asking for her signal strength this afternoon..haven't heard from her yet, but the ch 2 signal here in Toccoa has improved, and probably after sundown should be viewable. Of course, they still have the option to build those translators, in Winder, Gainesville and Rome.... happy viewing....

Update... The sun has set, and ch 2 is very steady. The other Atlanta stations I receive are in the 80s on the meter, ch 2 is around 50 but no drop outs. Big improvement.

Finally getting 2 again here in Woodstock. I have trees in my path and it was a little iffy before. The signal is good now around 80+ % and no drops. Took too long but thanks WSB. I am getting everything I need up here now and some I don't need for that matter. 2,5,8,11,14,16,17,30,32,34,36,46,57,63,69

All from a stationary roof mounted Channel Master 4221 with a 7777 preamp. I had a home-made 4 bowtie antenna that was nearly as good but I'm happy with this setup now. I hope it's clear for everyone else now too. I saw plans for another channel as well. I think it was MyTV or something. Anyone know the details of that?

The folks at TV Guide are working on it. Until they correct we will not air the signal.

No more TVGOS service for Atlanta. Reply from Steve Flanagan at CBS46:

I want to give you an update on TVGOS.

Earlier this week we identified another make/model of converter having
the same decoding problem when the TVGOS stream is present. This
indicates to us that the problem is even more widespread than we
initially thought.

As a result we have made a business decision to discontinue the TVGOS
service completely. We are now in the process of returning the
equipment to TV Guide.

I suspect they will approach other stations in town looking for an
outlet. Please contact them for more information.

Someone posted several weeks ago that they had lost GPTV 8, at the time I had a strong signal. However, they have competely disappeared over the last three days... no sign of a signal. Anyone else having problems?
Thanks

I'm glad WSB tower work is done, my signal is peaking out at 84. Thx for the updates guys!
Holy crap! I knew something was up with the host station (CBS). I mean my TVGOS was working until these last 3 weeks. You mean to tell me a bunch of digital converter boxes are getting in the way of the program-listings-info signal! Wow.
Anyway! I'm glad I came here and got this information. You guys are great. Thanks for the info.

That's the official story for now. It would be more beleivable if it was happening in a lot more locations.

Anyone use a OTA HDTV USB tuner for your computer? How'd it work? Any advice?

I use HDHomerun for Mythbuntu with success. I recommend it.
35 miles east for Atlanta.

It seemed WSB was stable as of Friday up here in Duluth and now it appears to be going in and out again. Are they making "more adjustments?"

I use the OnAir GT (Windows XP) with great results in Forsyth County (the major stations come in at 80-100% signal strength for me). There is a thread about this tuner at AVS forums:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=695589

I also have an internal card (Windows XP) - the DVICO Fusion which is excellent. They also make a USB version. AVS DVICO thread:

Ditto for me. The signal strength was around 90% for me two days ago and then it started dipping to 60%.

After the above reply from WGCL was reported here, I sent an email to Rovi (formerly Macrovision, owners of TVGOS):

And today I received a reply from them:

If your Guide does not return in by 10/19/09 please reply to this email letting us know so we can update you as to the status of TVGOS data passage in the Atlanta area. We apologize for this inconvenience.

Obviously this doesn't jibe with what the WGCL CE said about dismantling their TVGOS equipment, sending it back, and terminating the business relationship. Certainly WGCL is playing hardball, perhaps justifiably. We shall see how it plays out!

"Dear valued consumer,

We were just updated by our broadcast operatios department that we are looking at other broadcast stations to carry our equipment in the Atlanta area.

For Comcast customers we will be installing equipment at their facility in the Atlanta area and expect TVGOS data to be restored in the next 1 to 2 weeks.

Thank you for your patience."
Thanks metalav8b, I got that too but have been far too busy to stop by and post here.

On another topic, I wonder what's up with WYGA and their 4 SD channels. Still seeing that hilarious analog interference rolling up the screen on 16.2 . Other 3 remain black.
Here's what they wrote me:

We expect the TV Guide data to be passing again by Monday Oct 5th. Please let us know if your listings have not returned by then.

I got 8 days of listings last night as well! My Sony DHG is off by 5 minutes, but I can deal with that. My LG is reporting a host channel of 21-0???
Well it appears I'm getting TV guide information and clock from WPBA 30.1 over the air. Last night, my Sony DHG DVR and LG DVR updated themselves (8 days listings)and my Sony got it's clock back.

I have two other Sony DVR's that are upgraded to the .21 firmware that were unplugged since the TVGOS blackout. I plugged them in this evening, tuned to 30.1, and a few minutes later, they had there clock! I'm hoping they download the grid and listings tonight. I'll keep you posted.

Hoping this is permanent and that Rovi has made a deal with WPBA to be the new Atlanta host.
Very interesting. The 21 you all are seeing is WPBA's RF channel number. Glad to see that they put it on a UHF station.

I wonder if this will pass through on cable systems too.

Just to be clear, they didn't fix the bug with WGCL. WGCL kicked them out and they moved over to WPBA. Perhaps the bug only manifested when they were with WGCL.

I'll update the FAQ if this stays up for a couple days.

Anyone have issues with WXIA (Channel 11.1) recently? I live in Cumming. Actually just changed from a homemade coat hanger antenna to a DB-4 (same location on roof). All other channels are better, but now I don't get WXIA. My old antenna did not have a reflector. It is pointed south (at most of the stations). Why would a channel that worked so well with my homemade antenna now drop? Is it because it is VHF?

Yes, 11.1 is on VHF 10.

I also live in Cumming. I don't know whether this bears on your problem but I used to get WXIA at 100% and that fell to 90% last week. One would have thought with the leaves falling, the signal strength wouldn't have dropped.

The DB4 is a UHF antenna. Some people have gotten VHF with it but that is not its intent. My ChannelMaster 4228 (similar in concept and structure as the DB4), also primarily a UHF antenna, does get hi VHF due to its design.

To add to your DB4, I would recommend an antenna like the Winegard YA 1713 or the Antennacraft Y10-7-13 to get WXIA (11) and GPB-HD (8) from Cumming. Or replace the DB4 with a 4228. Or replace the DB4 with a combo UHF\\VHF antenna. The 4228 does give me solid performance (90-100%) for all the major UHF channels here in Cumming.
