PVR/MPEG-2 encoding - what is the right hardware?

Hi,

I hope this is the right forum for this topic. I'm looking to buy a TV/capture card that can serve two purposes:
1) allow me to start playing around with PVR applications (like myHTPC, BeyondTV, or maybe even XP MCE)
2) allow me to archive shows from my existing UltimateTV unit to DVD format

To accomplish this I am looking at cards with hardware MPEG-2 encoding. The Hauppauge PVR 250 ($140) and the AverMedia m150 ($79) seem like good deals but it seems like the difference in price is because the m150 has no software included so I wouldn't know how to use its hardware encoding capabilities unless used in conjunction with a PVR app such as those I mentioned before.

Does anyone have any experience with these cards? What recommendations and/or warnings can you make about either of them?

Thanks,
David

Dave,

If you decide to go with the M150, you have too have MCE2004. You cannot use XP Pro. I found that out the hard way. I had to completely re-install my pc with Media Center. BUT it was totally worth it.
