I've pretty much given up on our local Fox. They don't respond to any of my emails, and their finances seem to be up in the air. I'm just waiting on the D* Fox-HD feed. However, I'm not happy about our ability to get all the Cowboy games in HD. Hopefully, most of the NFC East games will be picked up by the Fox-HD East coast feed, but the other games worry me. I'd get the Sunday Ticket, but I'm pretty sure the Cowboy games will blacked out here. That leaves lowly Kyle to deliver us some HD.

I've never bought Sunday Ticket, but why would Dallas games get blacked out here (ie. Houston D*)?

It does stink that we'll never get much out of KYLE.

This thread gave me the impression that any game on your local channel would be blacked out. I've never bought the Sunday Ticket before, so I'm not positive about the whole black out thing.

I cant see paying that much cash to watch NFL ball.... between the HD game on CBS and my homework that I tend to put off till sunday I am normally pretty busy sundays....

Hehe... I forget that you're still a student. My wife is still in school and hates the fact that I can come home and watch TV.

I'm not a big enough NFL fan to get ST either. I'll just enjoy what KBTX and Fox-HD East have to offer.

Don't you suscribe to every provider available (D*, E*, and Voom). I thought for sure that of all people you would buy the Sunday Ticket.

I HAD d*, and have e* now but no HD box (just top60) with them anymore... My next will be VOOM. Ive sold most of my equipment to pay for the other stuff so Ive done everything real cheap.

I'm finally thinking of setting up an antenna to pickup KCEN and anything else out of Waco. I'm not too worried about Fox or ABC since I'm betting those will eventually get picked up by D*. KCEN, KBTX, and KAMU would probably be the channels I'd like to get most OTA.

I'd like to attic mount if at all possible. My wife doesn't really want or will let me errect a tower at our house. I'm just south of Rock Prairie, so I'm at least near the higher area of CS.

Any recommendations of antennas? Maybe something I can pickup locally. I'm pretty much antenna illiterate.
Are you using anything now to pick up KBTX and KAMU? I don't remember off-hand if you have said you get those now. If so, all you need is some way to combine your current setup with a VHF for KCEN. If not, you will need a combo (VHF/UHF) antenna for all of them. Also, does your attic have that metal foil lining for insulation under the roof? If so, an attic install may be tricky.

I'm using $10 rabbit ears to get KBTX and KAMU. My wife would prefer getting rid of those though.

I'm not sure about the foil lining though, I'll have to check this evening. The house is just over a year old if that helps any.

Would an antenna like this work?

If it is that new, there is a good chance it has the lining in it, depending on the builder, of course. Good for the A/C bill, bad for TV reception, especially long distance, though.

Hey Dave, in my old attic mount I used a CM3020 UHF/VHF combo that I got from Lowe's. This thing is pretty big so you have to have an open space in the attic to mount it so that it is aimed towards KCEN. The reception I got with it was ok. I usually watched KCEN at night when the reception was better, but I did watch some day events such as horse racing with pretty good results on the old setup. You're welcome to try mine out if you would like. I also have a CM Spartan preamp and a RS double bowtie UHF that are not being used either. If you chose the separate route for UHF and VHF, the double bowtie could be used for KBTX.

An antenna like that should give you a pretty good shot at KCEN, if it will fit in your attic. Be sure to put some ice cubes in your pockets if you get up in your attic this time of year!!
I'll have to measure to make sure I have room for an antenna that size. Did you have luck getting KCEN without the preamp, or only with that installed? Luckily the place I plan on putting it does have an outlet nearby.

I think the only thing that might deter me is if I have that lining Sid was talking about. I guess I'll go around peeling up some shingles to see if I have it.

Don't worry about the outlet, the power supply goes next to the stb while the preamp part on the antenna doesn't require power. I used the preamp because of a long cable run, and yes, it made a difference. Do you know who your builder was? Maybe you could just call them and find out if they use the lining. I'm not sure if I have the lining or not.

Maybe something like this would work!!
homemade antenna for channel 12
Just called my builder and he's pretty sure there's no foil liner.

No if a cold front would blow in so I can get up in the attic.
As far as the lining thing, all you have to do is look up at your roof from inside the attic, in between the rafters, and you should see just wood if no lining, or shiny foil with writing on it if it is there. It's not directly under the shingles, it's just under what the shingles are attached to, usually a type of plywood. In other words, it would be the first layer of your roof from the inside. Unless someone installed "pink" fiberglass insulation under it, not likely.

I bet it is nice and cool in Canada, and you get the networks in HD.
Id take canada over htown this time of year any day... Better than its hot as hell houston where you can see the humidity in the air.
I've got a big ass fan, an antenna, and some cable. Hopefully I won't die up there.

I'll post results when I get some.

Good luck Dave! Try getting the antenna as high as possible. That's where I got the best results. If you want to borrow a preamp let me know. At 7:15 pm, my signal level for KCEN on my HD-TiVo and my old antenna setup was around 70%. BTW, the PQ for KCEN's SD stuff is horrible, but Leno looks great.
Hey, Dave, did you get that monster in your attic, or did the monster in your attic get you?? Hope you haven't suffered from heat stroke!!

I was able to get everything installed (antenna + preamp), but I haven't had any luck picking up KCEN yet. I'm supposed to point at 307 degrees, but I may not be exactly there. I can pickup the analog KCEN though. My orginal placement was way off using a GPS outside. I guess I'll have to play with the compass more to get it right.

It was quite hot up there, but a 20" fan kept things somewhat cool. The hardest part was running the coax down to my HD receiver.

Good to hear from you Dave. I've been reading the obits the last couple of days - expected to see, "Man dies trying to get HD in B/CS." So you haven't even got a blip so far?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I never had any luck getting anything in the attic, but I always figured I was doing something wrong. Eventually just gave up.

Praying for networks through D*...
