Waco / Bryan, TX - HDTV - Page 210

KNCT is in HD on DirecTV. I was checking my season passes and it looks like they duplicate everything I was getting on KWBU, so my panic can subside.

Thanks for the tip on KXXV! I almost fell out of my chair when I saw that. We've been promised HD for at least two years and I was beginning to think it would never happen. I suspect KCEN hyping their local "HD News" is putting pressure on the other Waco locals.

Well I finally dumped TWC for Grande (in Waco). My QAM channels with TWC were cut to just ABC, FOX, and PBS, and switching to Grande today got me back all the channels TWC had dropped on me. So, I'm a happy camper again with all the locals available to me again. HDHomeRun quick scan picked them all up easily, now to just get Windows Media Center working and I'm back in business.

Oh, and the Grande install tech had no clue what QAM channels were, and assured me I would not be getting any channels, just internet. I tried to explain it to him, but to no avail. One day I hope cable companies at least mention something about QAM to their employees, I've yet to find an install, support tech, or salesperson who has any clue what it is.

On a side note, I went with 12meg down, 1meg up internet (only a couple bucks more than Roadrunner's 8meg down, 256 up), and testing it on speedtest.net gave me 20meg down, 1meg up. So I'm a happy Grande customer!!!

I couldn't believe my eyes when I walked in tonight and the news was on in HD after me posting about it this morning. I must be prescient. Did they even advertise it beforehand?

KYLE-TV 28.1 (FOX) & 28.2 (Estrella) was off the air last night from 7:10 PM to 10:15 PM due to failure of both air conditioners at the transmitter site. The digital microwave STL reciever in the building lost lock due to the extreme heat in the room. (110 degrees)

Start predicting more stuff, maybe it'll come true. Something like: broadcasters announce plan to begin immediately offering all programs available online in Windows Media Center and works with streamers. As well, ESPN and many other channels available a la carte online
post #6280 of 6504
That prediction might not be that far off..... but for the xbox360 and not media center.

I really could see a streaming version of what sezmi is ($25/month for a package the basic channels).

Is that short for Precognitive?

I like that one even more :-)

Anybody else using the D* multi-room networking beta to view HD-DVR material on all receivers? What do you think? The only problem I have is that my HD-DVR constantly drops its connection. If you're watching a program on another receiver, the program isn't interrupted, but you're no longer able to view the playlist. I guess I need to scratch the wireless device and plug the DVR directly into the network.
I haven't tried the multi-room viewing yet. What are you using for wireless? I've got one hard wired, but don't think I can get a wire over to the other room. MRV would be very nice though.

It's the wireless gaming adapter D* recommended. Either dlink or linksys. I'll have to double check.

Ok, so I dropped the wireless adapter and hardwired the HD-DVR, and now, the D* multiroom works like a charm. Even with the wireless adapter, I had no dropout issues at all once a program was playing.

Dave, the wireless adapter I was using was a Linksys dual-band N gaming adapter. You're more than welcome to try it if you'd like - just pick it up on campus one day. Of course, you probably already have one with all your gaming systems.

I'm actually considering suspending D* and going without TV other than what can be streamed / dl'ed off the net. Currently looking into PlayOn that connects with the Xbox. I watched Family Guy last night and the quality wasn't too bad. I'll probably re-erect the antenna to at least get CBS and FOX OTA.

We'll see how long we last. We're not pulling the plug until after Lost.

Even with all the new channels coming online soon?
I know, it's crazy! We'd like to save some money on bills and I find myself much more productive without TV. I was crazy productive the two weeks my net connection was down. Still need that for work though.
The only thing keeping our directv account open is sports.... even with all the new channels coming how many of them do you actually watch?

Between my free clear QAM channels I get 85% of my TV viewing covered. If I can find an acceptable solution for ESPN (hoping the xbox gets that announcement at e3) I could very easily drop my tv service.
I will definitely be watching ESPNU. Also, D* just gave me STARZ free for one year, so I'm looking forward to those additions. I guess our viewing habits are different. The only things we watch on network TV are The Office and Biggest Loser (and the NFL).
Yeah I NEVER buy the premium channels.... I am right now paying for HBO ONLY for the pacific. Its last episode is sunday and I will be dropping HBO as that night. Netflix covers starz for me (although not in HD)..... I would be pissed if I lost Spartacus but I have no interest in watching anything else on starz.

I know these are not HD but the streaming versions are getting better and better (nbc olympics and march madness on demand for live events) and I have no doubt they will soon be on par with the broadcast version..... and probably one day will look better (because there is only so much sat space to compress all those channels into where internet bandwidth is constantly growing). They can already do pretty amazing things with movies (zune video and vudu can stream 1080p and it really is very close to bluray quality). ESPN3 already covers most of their channels so a single one like espnu isnt that important anymore. In some ways its vastly better because you can show all the live events in one place and not have to deal with only being able to show 4 things at once (or however many channels espn has these days). I have noticed a few times that there were 15-20 live events on at a single time (college basketball season).

I noticed last night that KRHD is broadcasting in HD at 40.1 OTA. From here Emerald Forest I now get reliably (so far!) KBTX at 3.1, KMAY at 23.1, KAMU at 12.1, and KYLE at 28.1, as well as KRHD, all in HD, using a second (effectively third) floor attic antenna--even though the trees around the house have all sprouted their leaves. As the neighbor's trees are now beginning to block out my D* dish, giving me the dreaded "searching for signal" too often now, I may just dump D* altogether, rather than pay to have a service person come out and move the dish, saving both the service call and the steadily increasing monthly fee.
Is there any way yet for me to watch KBTX in HD? I have Dish and live in CS.

I'm not sure if Dish offers it via satellite, but you can get an OTA antenna and you should be in good shape. KBTX's signal is pretty strong, so you may only need a small indoor antenna. Try one of the cheap ones from Wal-Mart first and see how that works.
Big/Lots has a pretty good little rabbit ear/UHF loop antenna for only $3.

Give it a whirl, and even if it doesn't work, your not out a lot of $$$.

Just a suggestion...
Can you record shows that come in OTA onto the Dish DVR?

I assume you can if it has an OTA tuner built in. My HD DVR from D* allows me to record OTA channels.

KYLE Off Air:

Kyle was off the air from 0800 to 1330 on Monday, May 24th due to a broken power pole at the Lott microwave repeater site. Electricians had to remove the old pole and populate the new one with all new meter and fuse boxes and conduit.
Since the storm went through last night I haven't been able to pick up the channel 44-1 or 44-2 OTA. Anybody else not getting 44-1 or 44-2? I get every other channel in Waco and 44 is out in both OTA tuner boxes.
