Yes, I had an old silver Scientific Atlanta box. I don't remember the exact model number.
They didn't transfer anything; I lost anything that had been saved on the DVR, and had to re-enter all my series recordings.
I just showed up at the Zimmerman Rd. office with my box, remote, and power cable. They gave me a new box with no real questions (she just wanted to know some account info). Since we rent the box (and remote) from TWC, they will replace them whenever we want. I had specifically asked if I could get "one of those new black Samsung boxes" so she wouldn't give me another older box.
Also, I had to call customer service to have them re-enable the caller ID on TV feature.

I like the Samsung box much better. It's quicker & more responsive when navigating the menu's. Also, it stretches the guide to fit the whole screen, which I like (I think the pillar boxes on the sides are a waste of space, screw aspect ratio). Occasionally it won't change from 480p to an HD resolution when I switch from an SD to HD channel, but I can just change the channel to something else, then back and it will fix itself. Also, some times it will create an echo after fast-forwarding or pausing a recorded show, but if I just hit the quick skip back button, it will fix itself.
It's not perfect, but after all the crap I went through with the other box (50% of the time I would get the channel not available message), I prefer this one much more.
