Improving LCD Rear Projection Black Level - Page 7

umr, i figured that would be the case with the different inputs.

the gamma values in my SM dont make sense to me. Why cant it be presented as a nice simple 1.0,2.2 or whatever. The gamma values are 32? ... and shift is 10? I bet they are completely different scales.
No idea. I still cant find a service manual. Samsung wont give me one. :(

booden,

Most SM values are specific bit registers that use values that are not user friendly. That is why they are in the service menu.

Typical values range from 0-7, 0-63, 0-255. This should look familiar (power of 2). Decimal values are rare in the service menu because the chips typically store the information as specific bit patterns that are not presented in an easy to use format in the SM.

You need a light meter like the one I recommend in the UMR Does GWIII XBR & WE thread to determine what your sets gamma is.

damn it!... just when everything was going so well my TVs gone and broke. I turned it on this evening for some xbox fun and there was no sound! I switched between xbox and digitital tv and still no sound.
I had a good look in the SM to see if I accidently changed anything, but I didnt. There are no parameters in the SM that affect sound.

Muzzakus, please tell me ive done something stoopid!? Is there any strange way to turn sound off on these tv's?

booden.....mute?

Hah, no I'm being factitious.

Booden, your upsetting me now, just when I was joyful for you !!!

I have no idea, I have not come across it. Maybe something under "options" in the SM. There are things that may affect it...Carrier Mute or Area, etc. ? Guessing here.

What about the user menu for sound, it's got all sorts of bollox for 3d sound, aswell as forcing output to external speakers, etc...give that a whirl.

Hope you don't have to send your tv back again. If you do, maybe it's time for a refund.

P.S. have you encountered crashing in the meantime ?

yes. the tv has crashed too!
Im getting a bit fed up with all this.

Ive checked all the tv's sound options, and tried the few things in the SM that might help as you suggest, but no joy.

This could go on all year!... I really like the TV but there are just too many problems. I may try and get refunded. We'll wait and see what samsung say to me when I call them.

You should have gone for the 61". Apparently they come out on the spot to service it due to shipping issues with this sized monster.

Bloody hell, can't believe it's still crashing. I'm going to report mine as soon as I get the free samsung dvd player "offer reimbursement" from the bastards. That should be here by now too, don't know what the delay is.

I also want the dvd player prior to any serious SM tweaking as apparently this is the pinnacle of DVD player quality. Upscaling, dvi, etc.

Im very upset about all this.
Im in the games industry and use the tv ALOT for checking out the latest titles and demo'ing our own work.
Ive now got a pile of xbox games ive still not managed to play because my tv is constantly busted. Bah!

Forgive me if I loose enthusiasm for this thread. I may well not even have a samsung LCD rptv by the time the week is up as the store I bought it from doesnt stock them any more. So it'll have to be a refund, and im unlikely to buy the same set again because samsung have really upset me with thier service.

Gee, you must be really pissed to be loosing enthusiasm for this great thread. haha.

No but seriously, decide what you prefer to do I suppose. Whatever it is you'll need to be seriously firm with Samsung as with any corporation. Put it all in writing, close the letter off with an outcome that you expect from them, by a certain date wich you nominate, and state you will report them to whatever the Consumer and Fair traiding authority is in UK if you get no response by that date. Relistically what you've been through is unacceptable, and it should be an instant replacement or instant refund.

I guess you may even have a license here "if you were to do it all again" what would you buy?

Your loss is my loss, no more tweaks and comparisons. Today is a sad day indeed !

I wouldnt buy anything. This was the only tv that had everything I needed for the price. The sell Sony GW rptvs in the UK but we get an old model called the 42SX300, which is the 'latest' sony here. The US equvillent is the WE models which are a whole load better, and far cheaper.

Im hoping they will still be able to replace this tv. I want a straight replacement or money back, nothing else. The big showdown is tommorow. Ill let you know how it goes once ive calmed down and cleaned all the blood off the floor.;)

I've finally ordered PAL DVE.

Had to do it from the US. Should hopefully be here within 14 days. Will tweak and report findings.

Booden, and progress with Samsung?

Well, I phoned them last week to get autorisation for a replacement.... which is something my retailer told me I have to do before they can change the set. I dont know why. I dont know why I have to do it, but anyway.....

They said they would call me back within 2 days and guess what.... no word. In fact, I can honestly say that Samsung have never returned a call.... never. I dont know what they are like around the globe, but in the UK, they offer simply awfull service.

Ive got to seriously think whether I want a replacement or my money back. I really want the TV, but samsung suck to high heaven, and im not happy giving them my money anymore.

As youve guessed, no doubt, from my tone, im not happy!

It's been awhile,

So how have things panned out for you booden ?

I've finally gotten DVE, and I've finally sorted out a lighter acrylic cover.

The TV now has good balance of better blacks and bright picture. The blacks are not a "black hole" type of black, but it's as good as it's going to get with this technology.

Now that I have DVE and blacks are out of the way...."I'm back baby!"
