I noticed last night that 5.2 was gone; maybe a relaunch is coming.

5.2 will back up Thursday, they had to take it off the air to do some testing.

From WRAL Chief Engineer
Peter A. Sockett

Maybe another sub channel coming online from WRAL?
I was thinking they've got one of the new encoders that will allow two HD channels to be presented in the same bandwith. That'd be cool... I'd like to see how that looks.

I "think" there are a couple of stations currently doing this... Probably easier doing 2 HD streams @ 720p...

That would be cool for WNCT so that we could get The CW HD but Im sure if WRAL is just getting this, it will be a while before any stations in ENC gets it.
Actually when analog goes away, the current analog antenna's of WNCT and WITN will be available for use won't they? If these are to be used though, a new channel would have to be approved.
WITN. WNCT and WNCT-DT use the same antenna. It is cut for all 3 channels.

Go to you tube and type in one of the stations call letters WITN, WNCT and so on and see alot of old classic clips of News casts, even a segment of Carolina Today.

Theres old clips of Owen Conflenti, Allan Hoffman with brown hair, old clips of Gary Dean and Linda Shore.

WRAL is not testing new encoders, they are testing a new technology that will allow for a more robust mobile signal.

That's right. I thought I had seen this somewhere, but then I thought someone had said they weren't all together. Oh well - that idea is shot...

Does anyone know what WRAL means by "More robust mobile signal"?

Does this mean increased signal distance?
Probably talking about mobile DTV. From what I've heard, it calls for about 4 mbps of extra error correction stuff, which allows signal to be received by mobile devices with much less signal.

Is it just me, or has the picture sharpness improved on 12? Even the analog looks really good.

Not just you I switched over to a new master control system yesterday. You will probably see some bugs and glitches untill the operators get more familiar with it. We are hopeing to start to move FOX on sunday night

I thought something had changed. Now 12 looks better than any other station here, and as good as NBC and FOX in Wilmington.

What did you put in?
In the last month we have been doing alot of changes we are on a new traffic system (OSI) Crispin automation, Omneon video servers, Miranda IS750 mastercontrol switchers, Miranda Kaleido Alto for monitoring, Pesa digital router, Evertz a to d and dto a's a, Evertz da's and Compusat sattelite record scheduler. Alot of money and time was invested to get all these devices up and talking to each other. I'm sure I'll have a few bugs crop up but in the long run our pic quality and reliability will be improved.

Ken-

With these upgrades, can we count on WCTI to record ABC shows in Hi-Def for playback when we have basketball that preempts the ABC network shows? That is, when I need to watch (or who am I kidding, DVR) Lost at 2 am, can I get it in Hi-def?

Thanks for all the inside info....

Ken,
Can you do HD EAS alerts/crawls too? Three of the Raleigh channels recently got this and everyone was excited about it over there.
Unfortunatley not yet the equipment I have bought is all HD capable but we will need to purchase additional HD server channels to be able to do this and with all the money I've been spending that wasn't an option for this year.

We can do EAS crawls in HD but I think what you are talking about are weather crawls and they come from the weather computer system again it only does SD after I get the projects I'm working on done I will look into this further. I can tell you it is something we talk about in almost every meeting we have about weather.

I think you will continue to see improvemts in all areas of our broadcast. Bonten Media our parent company is dedicated to giving us what it takes to do a good job. Unfortunatly things take time and as a group there has been quite a few large expenditures to get ready for 2009.

Ken when can we expect WCTI and WYDOs digital channels to change to VHF? Will this be on the transition day next Feb or before?

Looking forward to getting a stronger signal.
It looks like the dish might be a little out of line on 12. There are a few black sparkles showing up...

Ken, I guess I should have said text generator maybe... I think you got what I meant though. Right now we can't see the weather crawls while stations are in HD. Of course with FOX there is no solution because of the splicer yet, but to go back to standard def while warnings are on-going.

WCTI looks really good up here in Wilson. I compared it with WTVD and WCTI looks sharper than WTVD. Now if they could only go 5.1

I agree on the sound, but the picture is outstanding, and I'll go with that first.

Shouldn't you know about 47 pretty soon? The FCC issued a Notice of Proposed Rule Making for it a week or so ago, and doesn't it get approved shortly after the comment period (30 or 45 days or whatever it is)?

I'm not terribly familiar with the procedure, but it seems like it's moving pretty quickly for a government agency. =P
