Was that the jump your sprained your ankle on?

Did WITN break the news on their 11PM Wednesday night? I spoke with someone tonight who said WCTI broke in with a breaking news alert telling about the story during that timeslot last night. I don't watch the 11 PM news anywhere.

WITN is trying to get under WCTI's skin with something that ultimately will bite them back. Pure and simple vendetta. Just shows how small time of a news director they have to go with this story.

foxeng..the difference with this story and all the other base jumpers is THEY GOT CAUGHT. There was an arrest made, so it became news. Just like bomb threats, we don't cover them unless there is a real threat...or someone is arrested. Using your analogy, TV stations should never report on the increase of copper and metal thefts either...because some Einstein might get the idea himself? By the way, WCTI had TEAM COVERAGE of the story leading off their 5pm newscast Thursday. Is that over exposure for a tresspassing story?

I'm not fighting the battle for foxeng witney, but the problem with covering stories like this and bomb threats etc... is it leads to copy cats. Someone jumping off a tower from 1000 ft is just out of their minds and doesn't deserve any attention. Next thing you know some crazy college 20 yr olds will be down at one of the towers trying to get on it to jump off after seeing all this coverage and publicity on the news. I don't think WCTI should have covered it either, other than just a brief flash saying four people had been arrested after trying to climb over their tower property fence while cops were looking for drug dealers, and then move on to the next story. WNCT did right by not even covering it, although maybe they didn't even know about it... ? I notice the PBS antenna didn't even get mentioned, but radio stations did. I thought there was only WRNS on there?

After you ran with it like it was 9/11 CTI had no choice. What did you guys expect them to do? Deny it? Come on. I am not fool and this isn't my first rodeo. Nor second.

Is your newscast nothing but tresspass stories? How many tresspass stories do you guys do in a newscast? Better yet, how many tresspass stories do you lead with? Not that many I bet. It has to be something everyone cares about. The days of "live for the sake of live" thinking are long gone.

This was a nice way to rub it in to CTI. I get it. Been there. Done that. Got the tee shirt. I personally would have picked a different story to do your rah rah on. What it has now done is opened you up for the same thing to happen on your tower, for the scores of nitwits who hadn't thought of it. Wrong person in the wrong place at the wrong time could bring a tower down, not to mention the loss of life that will surely occur if that were to happen. And I have no doubt your tower has base jumpers on it and you have no idea it is happening. Just hope CTI's newsroom doesn't catch wind of it. Glass house scenario. In this case law enforcement did their job. The jumpers got caught, as it should be. My guess is they will be back someday. They usually do. It isn't news. No one outside of the industry cares. And the base jumpers certainly don't care either.

For the record, base jumpers get caught all the time here in the Triad. I don't know how many times I have been doing late night transmitter maintenance and see the telltale head lamps flying off the next tower over. No one in this market reports on it. It isn't news. But for everyone that does get caught, scores don't. When it is reported, it is an open invitation to give people ideas. The last thing you want are fearless knuckleheads hanging on your tower damaging equipment (usually the elevator or snagging auxiliary antennas up and down the tower) without permission. We don't need our insurance premiums any higher than what they are nor equipment damaged that doesn't work when you need it to and you miss a BIG news story or worse, takes you off the air when they damage the STL antenna. That is how these things usually play out. I don't need the headache and neither does MY management. Yours may not care.

My suggestion is the best thing in this thread is to let it die. It is a given, you won't change my mind and I won't change yours. Agreed?

WNCT announces Alan Hoffman is retiring this Fall. I guess I better watch because I won't be able to wait much longer for HD, or he'll be gone.

You TV people are a catty bunch.

It's like the fight scene from Anchorman in here. All we're missing is Univision.

Believe it or not, WNCT is the only media outlet pronouncing LeJeune properly. The others obviously don't want to change because they know if they do, it is basically saying their competitor is right and they are wrong, and also it doesn't matter to them because they are beating WNCT in the ratings anyway, so why should they change now?

WNCT isn't changing to HD news, so there you go...

jspENC:
It is NOT the correct phonetic pronunciation, period. We debated this before. It's a French name. I took French in HS and I know what I'm talking about. I buy "lejé-un" without the stupid fattened exaggerated [R]. I will make it a point or a self imposed assignment to put this to rest.
I am only interested in the correct pronunciation and I will come back with reliable undisputed information.
Thank you

Is WITN having any issues with their over the air signal the past few days?

I live in Greenville and have a Winegard 7694 antenna in my attic. Normally I receive channels 7, 9, 14, 25 and 38 at or near 100% reception all the time (regardless of weather conditions). Channel 12 I receive between 60-90% and sometimes drops out badly in poor weather (or if a plane or helicopter flies over).

However, for the past 4-5 days channel 7 has been awful -- I have repeated dropouts and the signal is all over the place from 0-100.

I am just trying to determine if the problem is on my end or something with WITN (especially since I am not having any change in reception with the other stations in our area).

Thoughts?
Channel 7 is definitely the most challenging to get a steady signal on, but I have not had any problems lately. I am thinking you have some multi-path problems being that antenna is up in the attic. Even outside, if you have a poor antenna, you will get drops so often when the wind blows it will drive you crazy. I don't know what to suggest other than taking the antenna outside and trying to peak the signal there.
Well, perhaps there was some validity to my reception problems. WITN has posted this today:

SKip Waters recently reached 30 years at WCTI. Where does the time go? Also I wish there was some site that had some of the old graphics they used to use at channel 12. I can remember graphics with a red triangle behind the 12. I am thinking early 90's? Also in this video is Jan Bean. She was really good as an anchor.

there are a lot of old things from 7, 9, and 12 on YouTube but I don't see the 12 with red triangle that you refer to (I also remember that logo).

This, IMO, is the best graphics and music they've had:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpYiTsEIkPs

Current graphics before they went nuts with it, also better music:

The old clip of Skip in that package came from the end of this video:

also, WPDE with a slight remix of the first video:

It's stuff like this that drives me to watch the Raleigh stations. How about Jim Howard and the Man-T-O instead of Man-E-O.

One of the things that really irritates me is the poor quality of local commercials. Both by the TV stations and Suddenlink. Children are cute in pictures, not trying to sell tractors or cars.

Children in ads aren't isolated to this market. Ironic you bring it up, check out the last few posts in the Greensboro thread.

This one was really good I thought. Snowy pictures there! Must have been taken way out somewhere.

Do any of you TV station guys want to do the expose of the year? Find out why this was allowed to be filmed and who authorized it. This is the last thing that ECU needed. This is horrible.

I saw that, and it sickened me. The student affairs department chair or someone similar authorized it. I remember when it was in the news... IIRC they did a press release on it.

edit: http://www.wcti12.com/news/29506217/detail.html there is a story by WCTI on it from when it was approved. It's not any kind of hard hitting piece, but I agree that now, after the fact, there probably should be one.
Been watching WBTW 13 Florence this morning. Their dolby digital machine is set up nicely, with full surround at all times instead of just left and right only on WNCT. WBTW sounds better than WRAL too. I don't see the blurry problem there either.

Also I was thinking recently with some of the new station promos running that WCTI does not have anything (that I know of) running saying they are the only station doing news in HD across East Carolina!? I would think that it should be priority one to have spots going saying they were first in HD and remain the ONLY newscasts in HD. WITN can't say their tower is taller, but WCTI could say their content is superior...
