watching a few minutes of Desperate Housewives it appears the jitters are back. As usual, the OTA signal is fine. Tom, please forward to DirecTV so they can fix this annoyance.

This problem seems to be limited to the "prime time" programming. I did not see it on the local news, any football games, or on the race earlier today.

For what it worth, the households that still have analog TV's hooked up to Directv still have the same local channel lineup as when everything went to digital on June 12 but no subchannels. Could anyone answer me the question: Does the HD version of Directv's HD local channels also broadcast the the local channel's HD subchannels?
Can't speak for the others but we haveno agreement to carry the "sub" channels on Direct or Dish. Luckily we have them on Comcast.

Thanks for the continued update on Direct signal problems for WAPT.
I will call them now.

Direct TV asked that I give out their Main engineering reporting phone number for you to call when you see the problem with WAPT so they can try to see it happening that moment.
the number they gave me is: 800-347-3288
also email me at tbondurantwapt@gmail.com so I get it quickly on my cell phone and can call them as well.

About the jitters on WAPT. In one of my previous posts I mentioned that it only did it on certain televisions. Mine is an off brand Viore plasma. WAPT does not skip on my converter box in the bedroom. I have a theory. I'm not an engineer, but it seems that it only skips on filmed shows such as Desperate Housewives, Greys Anatomy etc. However it does not skip during the news, cheap local furniture/car commercials and live broadcasts such as Dancing with the stars. Think about it, what is the difference between filmed prime time shows and live broadcasts. Heres what I think. Filmed movies and I suspect some HDTV is filmed at 24 frames a second but video runs at 30 frames per second. Analog TV has a way of broadcasting a 24 frame show without there being any flicker. With HDTV, its a whole different animal and I know very little about it. But since the skipping is only on prime time shows and not live or SD video, It must have something to do with the frames per second. Its not syncing up. It looks like missing frames to me.
I forgot to mention. I do not have cable or dish. WAPT drops frames when I'm watching using my antenna on one of my televisions. Other TV's are fine.

Interesting theory about film. On my same LCD TV, which is 1080p and capable of 24fps, the WAPT feed from DirecTv has the strobe effect but OTA it does not. It may be how DirecTv is encoding the WAPT feed. None of the other channels do this, however. ABC is 720p, as is FOX and FOX looks fine.

I have also noticed the issue does not seem to show up on live HD broadcasts. Dancing looks fine right now on DirecTv (now back to football!!!) - but I'll check again @ 9:00PM when a new program comes on that should be film based. I have also seen this in reverse in the mornings, where the morning programs look fine, but some of the commercials have the strobe effect.

AT&T U-Verse is now available at my house...looks pretty tempting. If it was not for the NFL Sunday Ticket, I would really be considering a move. I must have lost satellite signal a dozen times today.

The 9PM show, Castle, on WAPT-HD via DirecTv has the strobe effect. It is happening on film based HD programming. Dancing with the Stars was fine.
tbondurant mentioned a month or so a go that WAPT installed a new encoder after the old one kept going out. Thats when the trouble started. Its been skipping frames during the filmed shows and commercials ever since. My moms Vizio LCD looks fine as does my converter box TV. It just does it on certain models and now apparently on satelite as well. I'm not even sure the station itself can see what is happening. They might have to actually find someone with one of those off brand Viore sets like mine or find a sat receiver thats acting up to actually see it. Its really kinda strange to watch. It looks like there's jump cuts in the film. but the audio remains constant. You keep having to wait for the video to catch up with the sound. A car going down the road looks like its slamming on brakes and then stepping on the gas. An actors lips will suddenly start moving fast as if they are trying to catch up with their own voice. At times its almost comical. But still only on prerecorded HD shows, and never on live or SD video programming.

Shark tank appears to be fine on the sat...

No, only the main channels.

also just a hint for those that just got their locals from DTV in HD. If you previously had series set to record on the sd channel, you must go in & reset that to record on the HD channel.

I tried calling the number Tom gave us the last time I saw it happen. I got the run around and was never directed to engineering - it was a waste of time.

It happens on my Sony XBR LCD 1080p and also on my Vizio 768p (720p) TV. OTA the signal is fine. It only happens on film based HD programs and commercials. SD, video tape HD, live HD all look fine. Very frustratring! Thank goodness I can record off of the OTA signal. I don't have that luxury in the bedroom however. The HR22 does not have an antenna input.

Tom - any more ideas or any other way to reach the engineering department at DirecTv? I talked to one of my neighbors, and they said that 16 looked fine to them. They were the only ones. Everyone else I have talked to said it is dropping frames.

I am still hounding Direct TV to get the signal fixed. If it was us causing it, you would see it on Dish, Comcast and over the air. they do not have something compatible set up correctly and have had plenty of time to get it right before going on air with it. If we have to switch to 1080i, we will but it will be a royal pain on our end to upconvert ABC and Regis that are delivered to us in 720p.
BTW, did anyone notice a closed captioning problem with Direct HD inthe last day or so? We had complaints for that too and we are really careful about our closed cpationing signal going out.
"If it was us causing it, you would see it on Dish, Comcast and over the air."

It IS being seen over the air on some televisions. Only on film or 24 frame programming. Not on live or SD video.

I heard a rumor that WWJX-DT 51 is airing My Family TV. Can anyone confirm that?

I called the number Tom gave us several days ago. I was given the runaround as well. The lady said she was submitting an engineering ticket on it, but its not fixed yet. We shall see.

16 WAPT HD via DirecTv is still unwatchable again tonight. This is becoming a joke. Also - FOX 40 HD via DirecTv has quit working again on my HR20-100 but works just fine on my HR22-100. This is the kind of mess that causes people to jump ship. I am getting failed recordings on FOX because my HR20-100 does not detect a picture.

They fixed this problem once, why in the heck is it back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am just getting a black screen on Fox 40, not happy trying to watch baseball.

I assume you are a DirecTv subscriber. Do you have an HR20-100 receiver? That seems to be the problem...my HR22-100 in the bedroom shows FOX 40 HD just fine. This was a problem when they first went live on 10/7. The problem was fixed on 10/8 - until today.

I've been having problems with 40, 16, and 35 also...ever since I got home this afternoon. No problems at all with 3, 12, and 29. 16 is always the best signal, but it's been going all over the place. On 40, I had dropouts every few seconds. Perhaps it's the weather? I never have problems like this before.

Nice to see that FOX 40 HD via DirecTv is still screwed up on my HR20-100. Still no picture or sound unless I reboot my receiver. And then I better not change the channel or it goes bye bye once again. This is getting so freakin' old!!!!
