Welcome to more confusion.

Why do cable channels hide there local HD channels on such odd numbers? I was in in a hotel and everything was in SD. Finally discovered the HD stations on some odd high numbers that was surrounded by blank adjacent channels. you would have never known they were there unless you manually tune through every channel one at a time.

They want you to buy their box

I thought I answered that before you ask int he previous note.
We are back now to full power.

I'm new to this forum, but I found it tonight due to my ongoing frustration with HD in the Jackson, MS market.

I also noticed last night that WJTV was not streaming 5.1, and to be blunt it pisses me off. I DVR'd the "Hawaii Five-O" premiere just to see if I'd like it, and the opening sequence in that show begs for 5.1 but instead I got a flat 2.0 presentation. I checked "CSI" earlier tonight to see if it was still an issue, and it was. I'm not a regular viewer of all CBS programming, but I do like "Criminal Minds" and it's going to upset me even more if that show is in 2.0 as well. It's not like I spent thousands of dollars on my Home theater to get "glorious" 2.0 audio.

Since I'm new, I won't even go on my rant about Comcrap.......errr........Comcast cable tonight. I'll save that for later. I'm definitely looking to switch to satellite soon, not unless our market somehow stops catering overnight to the poor basic cable subcribers.

Couldn't pay me enough. I'm not generally afraid of heights, but that video made me rethink that.

I've a friend VERY high with CBS...I'll ask him...this only been a problem for a few weeks...they (12.1) USED to do Dolby Digital 5.1...

Thanks, I really appreciate that.

I apologize in advance if this makes no sense at all. I'm not on the up and up with all of the correct jargon.

Has anyone noticed any weird brightness issues on WAPT HD? I'm watching it through Comcast. At times it seems as though its getting brighter for a second or two then it suddenly snaps back to where it was. It's pretty subtle, but definitely noticeable. I've only noticed it during actual ABC network programming.

I don't suspect it to be a issue with my TV, because this is the only channel I've noticed it on. Has anyone else noticed this?
I haven't noticed anything wrong with WAPT. but I use an antenna so I get it straight from the source. It could be some problem with comcast. I do know that people on here have said the picture is superior over the air than with cable.

You did. I was just mentioning the fact that you could pick up WAPT in low power with rabbit ears but not with an outside antenna

Next time I see it happening live, I'll have to switch over to OTA to see if I notice anything there. Thanks for the reply.
Now that WAPT has removed the old analog antenna system parts, our digital signal is transmitted "cleaner" whcih means when you scan, you are more likely to get us if you did not before. However, we are at half power today because we lost a cooling fan in one of the transmitters yesterday and had to order one overnight. It is always something...Thanks for watching.
I'm curious. What became of the old analog transmitters and other equipment after the digital transition. Did the stuff go to the dump? It would be a shame to see perfectly good expensive transmitter be scrapped, but I can't see any use for it in this country unless it were used for a low power analog station or maybe some other country that hasn't converted yet.

Newer analog transmitters are able to be converted to digital. I suspect a station like WDBD might have done this, as did WRBJ most likely. WJTV might have done so as well.

Older ones went into the scrap heap.

WRBJ 34 might as well be in analog. even though its sending out an HD signal, all the content is SD. Worse yet network programming is letterboxed which comes out windowboxed on a widescreen TV. The picture so dark and dull during network programming that its unwatchable. I know its like beating a dead horse, but thats the reason I never watch CW34 at night.

I want to know why I've been noticing strange artifacts on a couple of ABC shows. I watch WAPT-Jackson. For example, I've tuned in the last two weeks for the new show "Detroit 1-8-7," and during each of the first two episodes I've noticed frequent discoloration or "blotches" on the screen, usually a purple color. This isn't happening on other channels.
Has anyone found out why it is that WJTV is no longer streaming 5.1 audio? This is an outrage!!!!!!!! Seriously!!

Are you on cable? I haven't really noticed anything over the air. Seems most of the problems I read about on here are problems with cable or satelite.

I was watching on Comcast cable. I wouldn't doubt it if that's the problem. I'm already sick of the lousy performance of their services. On any given day you never know when one or more HD channels will be enitrely out, or suffering repetitive audio cutouts, freezing, etc. I'm looking to change to satellite, if for anything to get the large increase in HD channels, but I haven't had the time to get around to it yet.
What i would do is to get a satelite for the cable- only channels and hook it up through the component jacks or HDMI cable if its available, or use the old red/white/yellow cable if you have an old TV. and put up a good antenna for the local channels. since its free you won't have to pay extra for local channels. The picture is also better for over the air HDTV, except for the subchannels which are only SD quality. I've seen messed up audio and video for years on cable, I thought they were going to do a better job once everything went digital, but I guess i was wrong. If you live out in the sticks or can't put up an antenna you'll have to pay.

Does anyone know what happened to WDBD. I can't get it on our Directv and Directv has a message telling us that there are technical difficulties and they will air it when those technical difficulties are cleared up.
Rich,

I just turned on Fox 40, and I am getting it both on Directv and OTA. They must have been off the air this morning.
It hasn't cleared up. May be the analog setup for Fox 40. The message is still there.

Were you able to find anything regarding this issue? I am very frustrated, as my wife and I watch 12 CBS shows during the week, making up about 80% of our total viewing.

What's worse is that I have emailed the general manager, director of engineering and director of programming at WJTV. Unfortunately, they are not good about responding. I sent feedback to CBS.com, but figure that is a long shot. I asked them to try to get action on this or grant me a waiver to get WCBS-HD in New York.

Tonight, I am also noting hiccups and pops in the audio. Great!

Join the club, buddy. I have flooded WJTV with e-mails in the last couple of weeks with zero response coming from any of the main players there. The only responses I've gotten were from on-air personalities who said they'd forward the message to engineers.

Most of the shows I watch are CBS shows, and it's very frustrating. I'm having to turn up the audio level very high to understand dialogue, and everything else just blends into a mess. I was watching one of the "Hawaii Five-O" shows recently and every once in a while there'd be an ear-splitting distortion in the audio that made me feel like my ear drums were going to burst. What's been so disappointing about that show is that the action in it is screaming for a 5.1 presentation, and we're being cheated out of that because of WJTV.

I guess I've been a little out of the loop lately, but I just heard this morning from a friend of mine that AT&T's U-Verse service is now available in limited areas in Clinton, MS.

I checked my own address/phone number on their website, but unfortunately I'm still listed as being out of their service area. Does anyone know if they're going to keep expanding their coverage in this area?
I don't want to sound like a smart aleck, but I haven't noticed any problems what so ever with any local station over the air. All I can say is I feel sorry for the cable and satelite customers. Because its obvious that you are paying a monthly fee to watch a crappy picture and sound. I'm glad I have an antenna. wow. I hope I didn't make anyone mad because I've brought this up before. I feel bad for you if you live in the sticks and have to subscribe.

The only over the air problem I've noticed is from RTV 12.3, which briefly goes out of focus from time to time, but only for a split second.

Update: As of sometime yesterday, WJTV flipped back on the DD 5.1 switch. HOWEVER, I still only hear Left and Right, no center or rear channels on CSI: NY tonight.

In short, it's half fixed. I'll have to try and email them again and tell them that the surround channels in their audio equipment isn't mapping properly in their audio output. Maybe in a few weeks, they'll solve that problem...

This is frustrating, as I have not had these problems from WDBD or WLBT engineering when I have contacted them. Haven't had a problem to present to WAPT since I went HD a year ago, but tbondurant (believe that's correct) is very good about responding.

You're correct. I noticed tonight that my receiver was indicating a 5.1 stream. HOWEVER, as you stated, we're still only getting left and right channels. It's taken them weeks/months to get to this point, so I wonder if it'll be another few months before they get it 100% fixed.

I'm just shaking my head in disbelief.........
