Unless you want the MPEG4 channels the HR10-250 will continue to work as a DirecTiVo box for at least 3 more years. Probably more then that if D* uses any good judgement.

My common sense tells me (just like you were wrong about the HD local rollout), I choose to lean towards what DirecTV says - and ALL I STATED IS WHAT THE PRESIDENT of the company said TWICE on May 4th. If its wrong - at least it is based on 'named' sources', not sources pulled out of thin air.
Well please dont take offense and I am not saying you dont have common sense but every politician that runs says he wont raise tax's too but I bet you dont believe that. Having been in this industry as long as I have and the others here whose background in DVR's know that it takes a long time to get one that works right and is pretty bug free and im sure that D* is trying to not deliver a piece of junk to the market place and because of that it has been delayed several times.

I take absolutely no offense to you, you have stated what you believe and you are entitled to have and share your opinion. I don't like those that have the 'I know better than you' approach and try to put people down with comments like Bwahahahahaha. Especially when those people have posted many things that have turned out to be incorrect in the past.

As for the post you made - you could be right, you could be wrong (so could I). I have not put my spin on it, I am just repeating what was said by Mr. Carey, and that I choose to believe it. If he said summer, and it came out in October I don't think my world will change much, or that he was being deceptive. Some would say that if it came out September 25 (even four days after summer) that he was misleading them.

And unless you don't mind losing the MPEG2 HD channels that you now are getting from D*. Those MPEG2 HD channels will be switched to MPEG4 in about 1 year (no more than 18 months) - and the big 4 DNS in MPEG2 in some DMAs will be eliminated VERY SOON. But of course if you only care about SD and OTA - no worries mate.

That may be the consensus for anyone representing directv, but most of the smart people here or those with common sense about these things, think it will be later than this summer.
exactly, i'm willing to bet on it.

no way, nope.

I talked with Direct TV today and they seemed to think it was coming out next month for sure. They said that they were beginning to get specs on it which usually means they're about to go ---- either way, you guys freaked me out enough to go ahead and order what they had (including the antenna) for a Sat setup. They said I could probably upgrade for free if they released a new one. Any advice (should I cancel the antenna for 99 bucks) or just let this thing get set up and worry about it later.

P.S. - They did say the new DVR would render the antenna obsolete.
The antenna will not be obsolete, unless the only channels you care about are ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox. For any other digital OTA channels in your area, you still need the antenna, which will work with their new receivers.

Most DirecTV CSRs know so little about HDTV and DVRs that the company could be accused of misrepresentation of the products and services.

This forum is a much better and more accurate source of information and opinions on what works well and what does not.

exactly, so if your fine with those channels, forgetaboutit, if you want more, get it.

personally, for a hundred bucks, i'd get it.

And you base that ASSUMPTION on .................

Is it that you just like to challenge people? I don't get it. I simply make a post and give in it information spoken by the President of D*. Does that really bother you so much - did it hurt your machissmo?

Oh - i just figured it out. First you would BET on being right - then you would BET on winning more BETS than me. I guess if you BET on EVERYTHING you WOULD win more BETS than me. You would also lose more BETS than me. Duh!

Oh and BTW, since you are in Canada and can't legally have DirecTV what is your concern anyhow? You're not stealing the signal in Canada by using a U.S. sub card/receiver I'm sure - as that would be a major violation of the law I would BET.

awe, now your gonna play the heavy on me.

do you really think i care what you and my government think about me? lol, please. i'm paying full price with american dollars and that's good enough for me, if that's not good enough for you, you can go f_ck yourself, sideways.

i know what i know from reading up on these matters, buck. i'm not some loser that buys everything people are selling, no, that's not me, that's you.

I posted this further down: As of today I can no longer order a HR10-250 through my account at www.directv. Matter of fact no hd is available, just standard sd, and sd dvr. The HR10-250 still shows up under the equipment tab just not in my account. I don't have HD yet, was waiting on DNS waivers. Could this be the reason?
I have hd and can't order the hd tivo either....but Im not sure how long this has been the case.
Maybe "drum roll " the HR20-250 is closer than we think> :D
post #4158 of 4353
HD TiVo is still available through third party vendors, such as Newegg.com , retail stores, and also through ebay.
Let's hope this means the HR20-250 will be available soon.
I got into a conversation last night with a member - he is even speculating that a big reason that no additional MPEG4 HD local channels (such as PBS, or WB, etc) have been launched is due to the delay launching the HD DVR. Never heard that before, but in some measure it is possible I guess.

cross your fingers because it's probably a refurbished unit.

there was a big run on the HR10's not long ago when directv announced their leasing plan was about to start.

i got 2 more at the time and many other people added more too.

throw in the constant rumors of problems with the HR20 and numerous delays announced by directv concerning this unit's release date and it all makes sense.

i have 3 HR10's now but i wish i had more.

I've been with DirecTV for over 12 years. Finally I am building my home theater the way I want it and will go HD. I am having the installers in this morning to put in a proper HD capable dish.

I bought the HR10-250 because I want the TiVO brand. The DirecTV installer told me the HR20 would be out very soon, and I told him if it wasn't Tivo branded, I won't need it.

I hate that they are forcing me to choose between Tivo, and some Tivo knock-off with additional channels (MPEG4 video). Still, I don't want to do business with cable companies so I'm left with little choice.

Maybe if none of their existing customers opted to take the upgrade, they would get the point.

I'm also really hoping that the announcement last month that they are continuing their relationship with Tivo might mean an MPEG4/Tivo HD box at some point in the next next two years.

Hoping the same also, but faster and with a bigger harddrive would be perfect.

Hoping the same also. Likely?

It seems to me that there are several possibilities right now concerning the DirecTV DVR situation.

1. The recent agreement between TiVo and DirecTV means that there will be guide support for DirecTiVo receivers for the next few years.

2. The non-patent-infringement clause might allow DirecTV to include more "TiVo-Like" features in their new products.

3. The new DVR might use TiVo guide data, possibly indefinitely.

4. A recent announcement of DirecTVs desire to swap out all existing receivers (starting out west, I believe) may mean that they have a plan to convert all services to MPEG4, not just HD (in which case all HR10-250s will no longer function). After all, there will be additional savings in bandwidth if they do this, and it is clear that they favor more channels over better quality.

Like most of you, I don't have any inside information, but it is certainly their right to make any changes they want, and it is our right to fire them if we don't like what they have to offer. I do have three HR10-250 DVRs, and I will enjoy using them for as long as they are viable. When that is no longer the case, I will have to choose between whatever providers exist at that time. I live in a rural area, where cable is not offered (yet)

As of now there are no plans for a new D* TiVo unit, but upon customer complaint and lack of interest in the HR20-250 over the next year or so, who knows.

The tech just finished installing my HR10-250. It appeared to be brand new in an unopened box. He says they have plenty. I am happy! :)

that's great news, elvisisded!

how they got their hands on a bunch of new ones is beyond me but the main thing is they have them. :)

Circuit City and BB both have plenty in stock also. Doesn't look like any problem to me at all
