If you dont watch imported movies like Japanese anime, European stuff, it really has no importance to you. I only have region 1 movies, so the region free thing is just an unused bonus

Just for clarification there are players that can be "hacked or modified" to play all regions but the player must also be able to convert pal to ntsc if that is required as it is on region 2

the Zenith does this beautifully!

Is there a non 1080i version ? the reason i ask is i see it listed for $50. to $80.http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks.ph...&Search=Search
post #63 of 1897
Can someone clarify if this unit will upconvert to 1080i to a non-HDCP DVI projector such as the Pany l300u? The FAQ mentions the Z1 which I thought was also non-HDCP DVI so I'm confused.

Q, great job on the FAQ. Might I make a small suggestion? When updating the FAQ, instead of making a new post regarding the update at the end of the thread (which can quickly get buried) if you could edit the original post and put a dated revision history right in the front we can see at a glance what has changed. What do you think?
I'll post a quick note here and more details in the main thread. I know people were complaining but I have not had the time to check through the 1000's of posts to see if anyone had the answer. (So please excuse if this is old news)
But I was able to program my universal remote to do the upconversion. It is an All for One Kameleon 8 and with device codes 0591/0741 advanced code number 069 does the upconversion. As with the front button the disk has to be stopped. Hope this helps.

I just ordered one from *G* as well. Couldn't pass up the chance to get 1080i over component+region free (since I have about 100 European dvd's that I haven't been able to watch in 4 years..)

Anyway, quick question; Does this player have the capability to play SVCD? I looked at the manual, and figure it won't do WMV/DIVX/MPEG4, but it may still do SVCD, right? If it could play non authored mpeg2 files etc, that would be great too.

Thanks

does vcd/svcd fine for me. even on the cheapest crumiest cdr's

don't think it plays non authored mpeg2's

Hey Q,

Just realized that the FAQ does not have the new info about the green desaturation due to SD rather than HD color matrix. Might want to add if/when you get a chance.

Thanks Primetyme, appreciate it!

Best Buy (make that Worst Buy) has this unit up for sale on their site now. Click here.

What's the build date of yours? Because mine won't play SVCDs. It will play plain VCD's far better than any other player I've got (three Panasonic's, a JVC and an APEX) though!

Thanks,

It can play SVCD if you change EEPROM values, I didn't try it myself since I don't have any SVCD. If you do a search on the main 318 thread, you will find the info you need.

I'll have my player by Monday.

I really like the ease of making this a Region Free player. Will it play all discs, or will there be a problem with those that use the PAL system?
Reports are that it does a very nice job of playing PAL discs. It of course still outputs an NTSC (or HD) signal when playing a PAL disc, but this is what most people (though not all) want when using it to play a PAL disc.

We are now at 116 posts for a FAQ!!!

Q made a suggestion on day 1: If you have posted here and it's now in the FAQ, go and delete your post PLEASE.

If you have to reply about a Q FAQ here, please PM Q... don't post here!

This is not a sticky if someone (i.e. Q?) has to keep bumping it up.

Sir Q: you are doing a great job, but can we help to get this fixed? ... this whole 318 is getting waaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of hand. Talk to a mod... work out if it really s.b. a sticky, or lock this and perhaps consolidate it into one.

My 10 bucks... Thanks...

Just do a search thread with keyword "EEPROM", you will get that post with the info you need easily. Maybe Q can put that info into FAQ?
You could always post a "new and improved" 318 FAQ thread.
I see from the FAQ that the 318 will do a PAL > NTSC conversion internally, but can it also play PAL natively without the conversion?

TIA,

Ross.

No. It is preset for NTSC or 60HZ HD output. Conversion though is nearly flawless.

My projector (dell 2100mp) doesn't have a stellar onboard scaler and therefore I have been sending it a progressive signal (I have a Panasonic RP62). With that in mind, would I still see much benefit from using this player at 1080i? (via component) Thanks.

John

For those interested, a complete Pronto TSU3000 PCF file for the DVB318 has been posted at Remote Central. You can download the file HERE . It contains all sorts of undocumented goodies, including the remote code for changing upconversion resolutions. Enjoy!

Is there a way to convert that to MX-500?
The Pronto pcf file is nice but would be better if it was a ccf file for me anyways since I have a MX-700 and I can convert ccf files but not the pcf file for use. Can anyone convert the pcf file into a ccf file or a mxf file? I have a Zenith DVB318 in route looking forward to hooking it up to my new Sony KV-40XBR800.
I haven't read all 7 pages, but wanted to say my remote is getting flaky. It will no longer power on or off the unit. Also, yesterday I noticed it would not let be navigate up or down in the DVD menu options of a DVD. I could only hit select. All other functions work correctly so I doubt it's bad batteries. Unfortunately, I did not program my universal remote with the power or navigate functions before this started.

I emailed Gochnauers so we'll see how they handle my issue. Anyone else have a flaky remote?
Somewhere in this or the FAQ thread I've read that if the Zenith's response to the remote or on-panel buttons gets sluggish it can be returned to normal by unplugging the player for a minute or so?
I haven't noticed the remote being sluggish, but mine is more directional than my other remotes. Sometimes I tend to aim the remote at the screen instead of the player and it doen't respond. Reaiming it has fixed the problem thus far.
noob here, please be gentle

If I were to hook this DVD player up to my Kenwood VR6070 (component switching) will I still be able to use the upconvert feature via component cables?
