DiscoveryHd on Comcast? When!?! - Page 3

I am excited about DiscoveryHD, of course, but very interested about WGN. I am a sports fan and WGN is broadcasting lots of sports in HD. I've never heard even a rumor about WGN on any Comcast system outside of Chicago. Is this confirmed?

JWhip or our other outstanding members of Comcast "insiders", can you comment on WGN for other Comcast markets?

That would be a great addition to the HD lineup (or even the SD lineup if that's all we would get).

Won't happen anytime soon, if ever.

I never said they were adding WGN-HD, Just that they were adding WGN. They are getting rid of 2 PPV Channels and adding WGN and the Hallmark Channel, both Analog

Ken H, thanks for clarifying. Too bad, I would have liked it, even if in SD.

The WGN Superstation that airs outside the Chicago market does not air the HD sports (right now just Cubs & Sox home games).

The only other HD programs on WGN Chicago are WB programs that are not broadcast on WGN Superstation since other markets have their own WB stations.

(Yes I know I'm lucky to see the Cubs & Sox in HD. I LOVE IT!!!) :D

Raidbuck,
While SD, WGN is being added to Comcast Baltimore Metro Counties analog FSS line-up effective 6/1. Hallmark is being added the same day.

What is "FSS"?
GoIrish,

Thanks for the information, what a nice surprise, that is probably the only SD channel I would have liked to add! Lots more sports.

jckessler,
Comcast's term for the combined analog tiers is Full Standard Service, FSS.

There are reports over on broadbandreports that Dallas will be getting Discovery (along with PBS and WB) within a month from a Comcast tech who has been very active in keeping us up to date. Nothing showing up in the program guides yet though.

Here in Indy, for about 1.5 weeks, channel 192 has been added. It is labeled as "To Be Announced". Currently they are simulcasting a classroom channel from a local university.

Is this just here in Indy or nationwide? Does anyone have any ideas what this channel is earmarked for?

Indy channels:

173 - ESPNHD
174 - INHD
175 - INHD2
178 - SHOWHD
179 - HBOHD
181 - Local NBC HD
182 - Local CBS HD
183 - Local FOX HD
190 - Local PBS HD
191 - "National"? PBS HD
192 - To Be Announced
195 - Cinemax HD
196 - Strarz HD

Thanks,
JJK

Nothing out of the norm here in Detroit. Lets hope something is coming and the guy in Indy is just getting is work done early becasue he has nothing to do (like watching the Pacers in the NBA finals).

From the Northern California higher ups, I've heard "we are very close to Discovery HD". No dates, but that's a good start. Unfortunately, it doesn't look good for HDNets, TNT-HD, or any other existing HD channel out there.
Discovery HD is right around the corner. Very, very close. HOwever, not so with TNT-HD and HD Net which is even further off into the distance than TNT-HD.
Probably June 24th or so when Alex/Arlington VA changes their Channel Line up around and moves all but Sho and HBO to Digital Tier.

Can't wait to see DiscoveryHD on Comcast. Just cancelled E* HD pack after the WCF games on TNTHD. DiscoveryHD is the one channel I miss the most next was HDNet but since there is no timeshfting on E* they were of little use.

I hope DiscoveryHD on Comcast will not have glitches with my JVC 30K.

I understand the unlikelihood of HDNETs (too much like INHD although several cable systems have both) and TNT-HD (why waste the bandwidth on almost no HD, although I hope they get it by November for the NBA season).

I'm less understanding about BravoHD+ and hope that Comcast will change its mind on that channel. I just haven't heard anything encouraging at all about it. Of course, unlike DiscoveryHD, for which Comcast is about the last major system to acquire, many systems don't have BravoHD+, so I guess we just have to wait another year or so.

Here in Chicago we have most of the stations in the same relative order (though some numbers are different and HBO/Showtime are reversed). We have our local ABC channel before NBC, and WGN (local WB station) in your "National PBS HD" slot. I'd guess your local WB station is coming online at 191, and maybe DiscoveryHD on 192.

I live in Indy as well and if you go to our local PBS website the new channel is just a new multicasted channel. Comcast added the channel on 192 when it recently went live. There isn't any data but the channel is called ideas and here is a website for more information: http://www.wfyi.org/wfyi2003/dtvideas.asp

So, does anyone have any more info regarding DiscoveryHD being added? Hopefully "soon" is very, very soon. (as in tomorrow)
According to an email I recieved from the Northern California Comcast management, they hope to begin offering Discovery HD in the next 2-4 weeks. They will do some type of media/marketing blitz to go with it as well.

I think I mispoke about HD Net. Move it in front of TNT-HD.

hmmmm...interesting that you took the time to make that comment...I'm going to speculate that you heard of some progress in the negotiations between Comcast and Mark Cuban...

Makes sense in that HDNet is HD 24/7, whereas TNT HD is occasionally HD. I got the sense that $$ (and/or minimum subscriber guarantee) was the issue between Comcast and HD Net and that if they could agree on that aspect of a deal, it would fall into place.

If Comcast could get HDNet, that would crush Direct TV, as Comcast would duplicate Direct TV's HD lineup, PLUS add locals in HD and regional sportsnets (in some areas) in HD, PLUS InHD and InHD2 PLUS Cinemax HD and Starz HD.
I had given up hope on HDNET. Now that would really be something. With that Comcast would be the undisputed leader (outside of VOOM, but they don't have local sports, HDNET, INHD and local HD except for antenna).

Perhaps someone should start a new thread, HDNET on Comcast, When? (I don't know if the possibility is close enough to warrant it, but it and Bravo are the only 24/7 HD channels left, I think.)

I never gave up hope for HDNet on Comcast, just figured it was a ways off.

There is one more 24/7 HD channel (besides HDNet Movies, of course):

Wealth TV.

But it seems to be pretty much off everyone's radar screen. It's only available via BUD right now. No talk or rumors of it being added to any cable or DBS.

I think it needs a name change. "Fine Living" sounds so much better than "Wealth TV" but I assume their programming is very similar.

Also I think Wealth TV needs to up its original programming. According to its latest press release or web site information, it has only 300 hours of original programming, or about 10.5 days worth (if played 24 hours per day). It could get old quickly unless its original programming hours increase.

Hello new to forums.
I would like to receive DiscoveryHD also
Am new to the HD area so I have a question.

My HD box will be delivered 6/19
I have basic analog service, will I be able to get it?
Or will I have to subcribe to digital?
(once it's available)

Welcome! You will need at least digital classic! Analog won't cut it for HD!
Also check what box their giving you! Make sure its a HD box 5100, 6200, 6208 etc...
