How big can I make my screen? - DAZIAN CELTIC CLOTH

Hi,
I am in the process of planning my home theater. The two projectors that I have narrowed down to are:
1) Infocus X1
2) BenQ 6200

I want to make a really big screen with the speakers behind it. I am thinking that Celtic cloth will do the job. I don't mind a screen door effect but I want it bright enough to still be watchable. If I use Celtic cloth for these projectors, how big of a screen can I build before the picture starts getting too dim?

The celtic cloth is not a good option for a screen... You will note that about 50% of the image will actually go through the material and not reflect back. The X1 calibrated will only be about 445 lumens. Given that you want a big..no a really big screen the X1 will not cut it... the BenQ calibrated is almost twice the lumens and will be a better choice but the fabric alone makes for a horrid looking screen..

Dazian Coated Celtic is a viable alternative to the other microperfs such as the Da-Lite Audiovision.

I hope that it is available as fabric for DIY. Is Da-Lite Audiovision cheap? Where do I buy it?

Thanks

Not sure if you read this thread comparing screens from Dylan on....Dazian

or pictures by Greg Jones aka bugman72.....but it can give you an idea of what to expect.

Hope this helps;)

I'd perfer pro-microperf screens (Da-lite Audiovision or Draper AT1200) myself which are not much more expensive than the Dazian CCC. The big boys (Stewart Filmscreen or Screen Research Clearpix 2) would definitely be out of reach (at least for me) right now:(

All of dalite screen materials can be ordered with the snaps already installed into the fabric where you can make your own frame and just buy the extra other side of the snaps to screw into your frame... I do it for customers all the time.. It saves money on the frame.. I have the factory specs for the spacing for the proper stretch for each fabric and you can transfer this to your screen frame.. snap for snap... Easy solution ...

Most manufacturers will do this ... you can get any size you wish... black borders any size you wish.. its a snap..

Very nice Robert,

A couple of us wanted to know if it were possible to do that (snaps) diy mount to your own frame question in this...thread. How would we construct mounting hardware to a frame such as this, concidering the black border?

Here is a pic of the screen I made in the 2003 shoot out ...

It might help... A goo digital grey lite..

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attac...chmentid=22098

It is a 1 by 4 ..on the face nailed to a 1 by two... ..mitered corners... inside edge chamfered with a router outer edge rounded over... Put the snap studs on the back of the frame just like they do commercially...

Nice,

Would we need to purchase the snap studs w/ the screen or do we purchase them seperately?
You order them with the screen..

I always order an extra 10 or so just in case..
That frame only took me 35 minutes to make.. and an extra 15 minutes to wrap it in fabric..

Alright, now we're cookin w/grease. I just received the Audiovision sample from Da-lite and didn't realize how thick it is. Good quality stuff compared to Dazian Coated Celtic.

vxd1, you wrote:

"Jason (pro-dealer) quoted the Audiovision (pro-screen) lower than the Dazian (non-pro-material), so its a no-brainer."

You might want to check you figures. Dazian's advertised retail price for cut lengths of 122 inch wide "Coated Celtic Cloth for projection" is $15.80 a running yard, which works out to about 52 cents a square foot. You can build a 5.6 foot by 10 foot Dazian screen for about $32 in fabric!

The suggested retail price for Audiovision fabric is around $10 to $12 a square foot, as I remember. I'd really be surprised if Jason is offering Audiovision for less than Dazian cloth. Did square feet get maybe mixed up with running yards?

First of all, Barrie

Welcome to the forum:)

Second,
That post was a comparison of the quality vs. quanity and their intended purposes for our application i.e. audio transparency and gain requirements, not sq./ft. to sq./yard.

The Dazian is a pretty cheap and cool alternative.

I've ran a 12' diagonal 16:9 picture with my X1 and I like the results. Right now I'm at 9' diagonal and wouldn't go an inch less.

The X1 is plenty bright enough to easily do 9'ft diagonal @ 16:9, and IMO it's still bright enough to do 12' @ 16:9.

The highest I've gone with the X1 is somewhere between 30-40 feet diagonal on my old apartment building's wall (with lights nearby) and to my surprise it was a brighter than I expected (I expected to barely be able to see a projected image). Not bright enough that'd I'd want to watch at that size, but it surprised me. The first time I did it I was projecting through a WINDOW and a screen door! The picture still made it through (even though some of the image was reflected by the window) and was brighter than I expected.

So, unless you want a SUPER bright picture than I don't see how the X1 isn't bright enough to do 9-12' diagonal @ 16:9. You could always get a high gain DIY silver screen to make it even brighter.

Although this won't be good if you are going for acousticly transparent screen, here is something to try with the Dazian Celtic Cloth...I made a screen for my ancient CRT with this a year ago and put non-shiny black velvet behind it...it looked pretty good....

I bought enogh material for 2 screens 71" by 53" at the time....a couple of weeks ago, after reading the post about putting mirrors and such behind other materials, I had an idea....

I put 2 layers of the Celtic cloth together, stretdhed it tightly, then put the velvet behind it....picture isn't really brighter but the colors look much better....blacks remained about the same....

you have to have both layers of CC right against each other or you get a blurred picture tho....

Good luck all
