Orlando, FL - OTA - Page 10

Does anyone know if WB18 and UPN65 are just being lazy, or did they lose some hardware during the hurricane? This is in respect to the fact that neither has shown any HD since (at least not that I have seen). Just curious (and hoping I'm wrong - for when the new fall season starts).

WOGX is also fox o & o, but i am not sure if they have the splicer installed yet.

WB18-HD was hit by lightning subsequent to Hurricane Charley.

They are of course working to repair the damage ASAP.

As for UPN65, it's not unusual for them to "just be lazy".

Fox Sports FL has gone HD (FSN-FLHD) but haven't seen any mention of it in this thread (forgive me if I missed it).
Is this available OTA? Brighthouse?

According to this thread http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=409554
WOGX is HD ready. I believe they are run by WOFL.

Kid_Digital_NYC - Thanks
Also interesting info on Bravo - have to check it out tonight...

I was watching some of Fox's national programing on both WOGX and WOFL. I didnt notice any Fox 'bug' or local logo that is supposed to be there if the the splicer was installed. Can anyone confirm if it is installed and running?

It has been confirmed many times that the splicer is installed at WOFL.

The reason you don't see the bug is because Fox isn't transmitting HD yet.

Anyone have any thoughts as to whether it is a good idea to take down the OTA prior to the hurricane?

Definite yes. It will turn in to just more flying debris
Took mine down this morning. (got enough other things to do as time gets closer)

Same goes for the dish if you have one.
How will you know how to position it when you put it back up?
Thread Starter
Just undo the mounting bolts at the base, installl at the same spot when its over. You wouldn't be changing anything that determines where the dish points.
use a marker and mark the positions that the dish are at

Thanks...good luck everybody.

I am having problems getting WESH from Lake Mary.
- I have the Sony HD-300 using DTV
- I just plugged in a channelmaster Stealth antenna
- I don't have a coax run to the attic, so it's inside
- I get everything but WESH
- On WESH I get no signal (and from the menus I get a 0)
- Is there a good antenna that mounts by a dish?

Any ideas or thoughts?

Thanks

I'm leaving all my gear up, including a 40' high microwave antenna. I was watching OTA and satellite 10 minutes after charley. It was very nice. Everything made it through fine I would expect the same this time.
I'm planning to leave everything up as well. I fared well the last time with no power loss but certainly won't count on that happening again. With the OTA antenna in the attic there shouldn't be any issues there.

However, the power supply for the pre-amp in my OTA antenna is up in the attic along with the antenna. It won't do me a whole lot of good if I loose power that way then will it? I guess I'm headed up in the attic in the morning to move that down with the TV so it can hold with the UPS on the TV for at least some amount of time in the event of a power loss.

This is probably a dumb question but is anyone else concerned about how easily the digital channels go down when there is a storm? What happens when the analog stations are shut down for good?
I thought I understood that once they loose local power and switch to generators many of the stations power down the digital transmitters in order to save power for the analog transmitters while they are on generator power.

Assuming that's true it's probably not an unreasonable approach given the relatively small percentage of the total population that actually uses the digital signal, and at the same time cannot receive the signal in any other way (OTA analog, cable or satellite). It did however seem to take an awfully long time for WESH to get their digital transmitter powered back up after Charley.

Here's what I'm receiving (and not receiving) as of 10:00 AM on 9/6:

WESHDT (2-1) OFF
WKMGDT (6-1) ON
WFTVDT (9-1) ON
WCEUDT (15-1) ON
WKCFDT (18-1) OFF
WMFEDT (24-1) ON
WOFLDT (35-1) OFF
WOPXDT (56-1) ON
WRBWDT (65-1) OFF

Some of these could be my antenna alignment (I haven't been up to check yet), so if anyone can confirm their reception, it would be helpful.

I know this isn't really the place, but we have a house in Melbourne Beach, and we are desperately seeking info on how bad it was hit - anybody know? Thanks for helping out.

As of 7PM I'm seeing the same except that WKMGDT is also out now. My antenna is in the attic so it doesn't usually move during this sort of stuff.

mgtr - Don't know specifics on Melbourne Beach but I can tell you the entire Florida East Coast from West Palm to Daytona got hammered pretty hard. You might want to check on Florida Today.

FOX Purchases Panasonic Systems For 720p
By Staff
Aug 31, 2004, 14:55

Secaucus, NJ--FOX Network's engineering and operations team has purchased eight Panasonic AJ-HD3700B D-5 HD mastering VTRs to be used for 720p HDTV recording in its network operations. The primary application for the D-5 HD VTRs will be to record for archive the upcoming season's broadcasts of NFL football games, including the 2005 Super Bowl, one of the network's key sport franchises, all of which are being produced by FOX for the first time in the 720p HD format.

These D-5 HD VTRs are in addition to those FOX purchased last year for its network operations in Los Angeles, primarily used for accepting network programs delivered by producers and produced in the 720p HD format that airs on FOX.

FOX will also install the new AJ-HD3700B VTRs at the FOX Network Center in Los Angeles, and as of September 12, 2004, FOX will convert all of its network operations to the 720p HD format. At that time, the network will distribute at least half of its primetime schedule in HD, as well as six regular-season NFL games per Sunday, and all post-season NFL games, including Super Bowl XXXIX. This fall, the network will also air an HD broadcast of the World Series, and will televise NASCAR's Daytona 500 in HD next February.

"The D-5 HD machine is the optimum machine to use to archive our NFL coverage in the 720p HD format, just as progressive scanning is the optimum format for capturing high-quality, crystal-clear images of the fast-moving sports action of the NFL," commented Andrew G. Setos, president, engineering, FOX Group.

"FOX is a leader in the advancement of technology in sports broadcasting, and Panasonic is delighted that the network has chosen D-5 HD and expanded its commitment to the format," said John Baisley, president, Panasonic Broadcast & Television Systems. "The availability of a full slate of NFL games in HD on FOX every Sunday is certainly a boon for sports fans."
