Everyone's a noob at some point. All of life is learning. No one's born with the knowledge (although some think they are, lol).
Sounds like you were getting some radio frequency (RF) interference on the cable coax connector on your set. Could have been caused by any number of things...a bad (or cheapo) length of coax cable, poor connections, something spewing RF emissions right near your set, etc.
As for your the buzz...I always keep my cable box volume at maximum, and adjust volume through the set. Otherwise, you might get noise from the TV's own sound amplifiers if the incoming signal isn't high enough. That's been my experience. I personally think the cable box volume "maximum" is a standard output level, and anything other than that is an "attenuated" level. Could be wrong about that, but it's been my experience with my Scientific Atlanta cable boxes.

and reinstall the software on a different directory ( "vbforum" ) because of issues I was having with my Webhost.
