well, how about this. It's pretty danged hard to get content, even from the places that are supposed to have it from producer to retail and from retail to consumer. Ya really think D-Theater even *makes* it to niche status? If so, awfully tiny niche...What's more, isn't one of the biggest reasons for JVC 30ks to be that cheap because of it's essential pray if you've got a good one/have to send it in for the fix kind of thing...I.E. a lemon?
If I didn't know you any better I'd say you were suffering from D-Theater envy. But I do know you better than that and I know the sort of movies that interest you, so that can't be it. ;)
It is a tiny niche, but probably not as tiny as you think. One of the reasons we are seeing shortages of certain D-Theater titles is those very same $300 JVC 30Ks. People are snapping them up when they wouldn't give it the time of day for $1,199 (the price I paid for my first 30K). More 30K owners means few D-Theater titles to go around. With the advent of cable boxes with IEEE1394, I'm sure a lot of these folks are getting the 30K to record with, but for them D-Theater is icing on the cake.
There are, however, places that maintain fairly good stocks of D-Theater titles: Widescreen Review and DVDEmpire are first places I try when ordering tapes. There are several others such as Buy.com, but they are less well stocked. WSR is a bit more expensive, but when others are out of stock they seem to have supplies still available.
Those 30Ks are cheap because they are refurbs or open box returns. I am not aware of any retailer or etailer selling them for prices below $300 for NIB product. The going price for a new 30K is still about $460.
I do think the 30K (and probably all JVC D-VHS VCRs) are ticking time bombs. I went through bloody hell, as did many, over a year ago with JVC trying to get the thing fixed. JVC replaced my deck with a new one with all the fixes and that deck has been working perfectly for over a year under heavy use. I hope it and my other 30Ks and the 40K I have keep going strong, but you never know with this stuff.
