FOX HD - Affiliate List and Upgrade Schedule

Thread Starter
Please read New Rules before posting

Now that Fox has begun it's HD broadcasting we are changing the focus of this thread. We will continue to update the affiliates, so feel free to lurk and check on your affiliate and see if there are any updates. However the main topic of discussion will now focus on reporting problems and assisting those at FOX in correcting any issues or problems that may arise.

This thread will be heavily moderated to keep on topic.

Do not Post:
1. Unrelated questions about programming
2. Questions about the status of your local affiliate. (Anything we know will be posted in this first post - this is a topic for your city's thread in the Local HDTV forum.)
3. Complaints about your non-HD affiliate.

Topical posts:

1. If your affiliate has not upgraded to HD, post here if you have an estimated upgrade date from your affiliate, or if the info listed in this post is incorrect.

2. If you live in an HD city, post any observations you have about the HD presentation of your local affiliate. Any glitches, problems, bad bug locations, sound issues, etc.

We are fortunate to have a tremendous amount of participation from people affiliated with FOX, so we want to keep this constructive to assist FOX in solving any problems that arise as promptly and efficiently as possible.

Will Fox be handing out the HD equipment to stations (such as WFFF Burlington) even though they are not currently on the air in digital?
WRGT-DT Dayton, Ohio. I was on the phone with one of their engineers during the time the Fox HD splicer upgrade was being installed on 5/10~5/12.

Keep in mind, though, just because your local Fox station is currently upconverting Fox Widescreen to 720p(or 1080i) it doesn't mean they have HD upgrade installed yet. For instance, my other Fox affiliate, WXIX Cincinnati has been upconverting Fox Widescreen to 1080i for several years.

I would like a list that shows what channels could pass through a FOX HD program if it was sent tomorrow. If a city gets added that someone knows is 720p, but does not have what they need to pass the HD programming, let me know and I'll remove it.

FOX has committed to have all digital network affiliates HD capable by this fall, in time for the NFL season to start. Of course there will probably be a few scattered exceptions.

Not until they meet the minimum criteria, on air 720p signal.

WGHP Greensboro/High Point/Winston-Salem NC is 720p now and is scheduled for splicer install this Tuesday.

Gee ... let me guess where one of those "exceptions" will likely be

At what point are they "HD-Ready" - that's what I'd really like to show. If 720p is not really the indicator, I'll put a footnote on each city until they're confirmed "HD-Ready".

DMA #65 :D .... I was originally encouraged about Sinclair's HD equipment purchase announcements ... but as they say, talk is cheap, and I haven't heard of any actual actions wrt WDKY-DT.

If referring to network, it is when the splicer is installed and commissioned. The whole process takes 2 days. (mine should be ready to go by late Wednesday afternoon at the latest) You will not know unless the station tells you or you see real 720 on the air.

I have seen the test loop and the PQ is OUTSTANDING. The loop is 2 minutes of Super Bowl 36 (in 720p)(Rams scoring a touchdown), 2 minutes of ID4 (the bedroom scene with Will Smith), 2 minutes of Ali McBeal (take you pick, it all looks the same) and 2 minutes of color bars when the station insert happens. Repeat. The loop runs basically 8am to 5pm (when the installers are working) and then they shut it down to get ready for prime time. On the day that I was looking at it, they had SIX DIFFERENT program streams running, all in 720p, but not all with HD content on it. One had a 70's show episode on it (SD 4:3), one had color bars (16:9), one had the test loop, and I forget what was on the other three. We just watched the test loop (stream 6) most of the time I had it up (about 15 minutes) and quickly scanned through the rest.

I take it that your FOX is a Sinclair. If Sinclair has a 720p stream on the air or has told FOX they will have one waiting, then you should see 720p on Sept 12th. If Sinclair has told FOX they do not intend to have a 720p stream up, then you are SOL.

I'll re-define the list to reflect your definition "splicer installed" will be considered HD-Ready. Until confirmed otherwise, I'll assume 720p broadcast only - splicer not yet installed.

I think I saw that loop in Charlotte awhile back - posted the question in the OTA forum wondering why it popped-up during the Simpsons. (Sometime between 5-5:30pm)

KTTV Los Angeles has been broadcasting SD upconverted to HD for nearly a year. I haven't seen any true HD being transmitted, so I don't know if they are completely ready or not.

The installers put a hard wire by-bass on the thing since you don't want it switching during network when there is no ASI stream up. There is a note on it that says do not remove before August 2, 2004. Someone may have been playing with to see if was still working. (I will have to resist the temptation myself! )

I know for a fact that KTTV IS ready. I have seen pictures of their splicer install. (their install is what was used to show stations what it all looks like.) They were the first and the test bed for the splicer I have been told.

SIDEBAR: I know people in LA had commented in the local thread area that about a year ago they thought they saw several Bernie Mac episodes in 720p DURING prime time. Bernie Mac is one of the shows that will be shown in HD on FOX this fall.

No FOX would be SOL because they will have lost a potential viewer :D

You can probably add WBFF 45 (Fox Baltimore) to that list of Sinclair exceptions. They've said on occasion that they don't have plans to upgrade to 720p equipment in the future. So I will be pretty much watching nothing but WTTG-DC in the fall. Thankfully I have Raven's season tickets so I won't have to worry about many of their NFC games.
