Samsung HLP Discrete Codes

Thread Starter
Has anyone figured out how to use the discrete codes on the Samsung HLP's? I would like to program my MX-500 universal remote to access the various inputs directly.

Thanks,
Eric

I actually found this thread on the Remote Central forum:

http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin...hread.cgi?1114

Dumb question, but what exactly do I do with all of these codes to program my MX-500. Each function seems to have numerous codes. Do I need a PC programmable remote?
There's a similar thread here, linked in one of the "popular threads" post, but I don't know how to use those codes for my remote (Harmony) either

I think I may have figured this out - gonna give it a shot later today (assuming of course my Tv is actually delivered :))

If you have a Radio Shack or One For All remote I believe you can use advanced codes. See this site (DLP codes listed at the bottom):

http://www.hifi-remote.com/cgi-bin2/ueic.cgi?TV_0060

Here is what I'm planning to try with my OFA 6131:

1) Program the "TV" function of the 6131 remote using 0060 (the Samsung device code) and then teach it the various advanced codes from the site above (discrete on/off and each of the inputs):

2) Once these discrete codes are on the 6131, I can then teach them to my MX-500.

Should work, right? I guess the big question is, does the 6131 accept advanced codes and if so, can I use any of the buttons in the TV mode?

Hopefully I can give it a shot later and report back. Much cheaper solution (esp. since I already have the remote) than buying that IRClone setup to get your MX-500 to accept discrete codes (even then I'm not sure if it will work).

So I tried this method out and the 6131 was definitely able to learn the advanced codes and transfer them to my MX-500. Only problem was, very few of the codes actually worked correctly. The following worked as expected:

Discrete On (001)
Discrete Off (253)
S-Video 1 (192)
PC (073)

The S-Video 2 code (019) actually controlled S-Video 3

The other codes didn't do anything.

I sent an email to OFA asking for the HLP advanced codes - will post back if I find anything.

Anyone else have any luck with this?

I programmed these codes also, went to my local BB they all work great on the HLN but I got same results as you on the HLP. I think I got a couple of the regular inputs to change also but nothing useful.

I'll try an email to Samsung looking for a little help.

While I was surfing the net I found some different codes. I'm heading out to go check them now.

Yeah that must be it - would have thought they would have left the codes alone and maybe just added an HDMI discrete code for the HLPs - oh well. Let me know if you find anything out. I will do the same - waiting to hear from One For All.

I have some more codes for you to try. I have Tried a few and they seem to work.

Button EFC OBC

Discrete ON 001 153
Discrete OFF 253 152
Video 1 188 132
S-Video 1 192 133
S-Video 3 019 251
Component 1 190 134
Component 2 061 136

When using a OFA remote you key in the EFC number

Need the experts to clarify something re discrete codes...

If, using the standard HLP remote, it takes 6 button pushes to change,
for example, the contrast setting by +1/-1, is it likely there will be a
simple discrete code to increment/decrement the contrast, or does this
require a macro (and a remote supporting macros)?

From memory, the 6 button pushes equate to:
- Invoke the menu = 1
- Transit to the contrast option = 2 (3?)
- Change the contrast +1/-1 = 1
- Escape from the menu = 2 (3?)

(Note: I am recalling this from memory at least a week old, but you
get the idea).

Nice work thepackfan!

Tried a few of these out quickly and some work some don't. The following seemed to have worked:

Video-1
S-Video-1
Component-1
Component-2
Discrete On
Discrete Off

Others I tried that didn't work (I did this quickly however):
Video-2
Video-3
S-Video-2
S-Video-3
DVI (this is the one I really care about)

Would be interested to know what other people found.

Eric

I just realized I had more inputs that the HLP actually has. There are 3 analog inputs that are noted as av 1-3 and svid 1-3 but these are the same inputs depending if svideo is used in the connection. I deleted some of the codes. Its a little tough since I don't have one of these sets yet I have to go to the local UE to check my changes.

I'll keep trying. I need these to set up the single button macros for the wife.

Your efforts are greatly appreciated :) I plan to test these out further tonight and this weekend.

Just got this response from One For All customer support. I specifically asked for the HLP codes, although I don't see HDMI so these may be the HLN codes. Most of the codes look different than what PackFan and I have posted already so hopefully they will work. I will attempt to try them out tonight. The table is pretty difficult to read (at least it's alphabetical) - sorry

Below are the advanced functions;

Instructions for inputting advanced codes

1. Find the function you wish to duplicate. The functions should be labeled
the same as they appear on the original remote control for your device. The
3-digit number to the left of each function is the code you will likely use
(ex. tv code 054--function code 497 is "Sleep")

2. To use the advanced functions: tap the SET button one time, then enter
the code for the function you wish to use. For example, on a TV working on
code 054, you would tap SET followed by 497 to activate the "Sleep" feature.

3. You may also program some of these functions directly onto the universal
remote control. This feature is useful for frequently-used functions that
are not already preprogrammed on the remote. To use this feature, just
follow the sequence in step 5.

4. First press the device key that you wish to program. Next, hold the
SET button until the remote blinks twice, then press 9-9-4. Now tap the SET
button, followed by the 3-digit code for your desired function. Finally,
press the button that you would like to assign for this function. It's best
to use buttons that do not already perform functions in the mode you are
using (ex. the PLAY button can be used in the TV mode since your TV does
not use play for anything else.)

5. After a button has been reprogrammed, you can still access it's
original function by tapping the SET button first. However, if you need to
reset a button on the remote to the original function, just press "SET"
(wait for two blinks)-9-9-4-BUTTON-BUTTON."

PROGRAMMING EXTENDED FUNCTIONS: (key setup)

1. Tap the DEVICE key
2. Hold down SET until the red light blinks twice - release
3. Press 9-9-4
4. Tap the SET for one blink and release
5. Enter the 3 digit advanced function code (see below)
6. Tap the DESIRED key...the red light should blink twice

Not really sure if these new codes will work. If you compare these codes to the ones from the website I posted above you will notice that the code for each function varies by either 256 or 512. I remember reading somewhere that there are really 256 unique codes and then they start repeating. So these new codes may in fact be identical to the original ones. Not overly optimistic but I will post the results later hopefully.

These are the codes for a Pronto remote. Also, these are the HLN, not HLP codes.
I just received an emal from samsung. They informed me that the only set they have with discretes is the tantus. At least OFA new that the HLN had codes also. I informed the CSR @ Samsung that the HLP has them. I requested that he look a little further.

So I tried out all three sets of suggested discrete codes - 1) The codes from the hi-fi remotes website; 2) The codes that PackFan figure out; 3) The codes I posted from One For All Customer support.

Here are the codes that work (the OFA device code is 0060):

Discrete On - 001 & 257
Discrete Off - 253 & 509
Video-1 - 188
Video-3 - 076
S-Video-1 - 192 & 704
S-Video-2 - 080
S-Video-3 - 019 & 531
Component-1 - 190
Component-2 - 061
DVI - 060
PC - 073 & 329

Note- when two codes are listed either one will work.

I was not able to get any of the codes for Video-2, HDMI or ANT to work. The HLP's don't have a Component-3 (077 is the code) so not sure if that works or not.

Eric I don't know if there is a Svideo 2 I think that might be the one listed as video 1 Since there only is 3 analog connections
post #19 of 441
I got another email from samsung about the codes.

Dear Customer,
Please contact our Customer Care Center, you can request to speak with one of our product specialists, we can be reached at 1-800-726-7864. Please have your model# and Serial# available upon request.

Thank you

So since I haven't actually got one yet I can't go any further. Eric if you get a chance givethem a call.

Will do.

I'm pretty sure that even though there are 3 sets of audio/video connections you have the option of selecting either S-video or composite video - you only have 3 sets of audio however. When you go to the input screen it lists AV1 and SVideo1 separately.

Haven't called Samsung yet, but I figured out a OFA code for DVI, Video-3 and S-Video-2 (edited my post above). So basically the only inputs we are missing are Video-2, HDMI and ANT, which isn't a problem for me at this point.

Sounds good. When I get mine in i'll continue to look for HDMI That one is the one i'll need. If you happen upon it let me know.

Just called Samsung tech support (tried this weekend but apparently the "HLP Specialist" isn't in on the weekends). Anyway, they said they have to look into what the advanced codes for the HLPs are, although the person I spoke to apparently understood what I meant when I described UEIC advanced codes. The CSR took down my information and said Tommy (their TV product specialist) will supposedly call me back. I didn't mention that I already figured out most of the codes and specifically pointed out that I was interested in HDMI. I did however ask for advanced codes for all of the functions. For example it would be nice to have an advanced code to change the source in the PIP window, which for some reason was not important enough to be included on the Samsung remote - kind of silly.

My understanding is the only additional codes are for power off, power on, and input switching, and that they are the same as those for the HLN's (at least all the codes posted here have the same results on my HLN. While I would love codes for switching pip source and audio, I would be happy if I can just get the input switch for TV(Ant) working... which seems to be non-existent.

Could any of the codes here be programed into the MX-700?

Does the MX-700 connect to your computer? If it does go to remotecentral.com and check out their forums - you can download an *.mxf file which you can upload to the MX-700.

If it doesn't then you basically have to program the advanced codes listed in my post above into a One For All or Radio Shack remote with advanced code capability (most have it and you can pick one up pretty cheaply). Then you can teach those codes to the MX just like you would any other remote. When you program the OFA or RS remote do the following:

- Program the TV Device using device code 0060
- For each command you want to program do the following:

1) Hit Set
2) Hit 9-9-4
3) Hit Set
4) Enter the 3 digit advanced code
5) Pick a button to map the advanced code to - it can be any button other than a few of them. I usually use the number keys for the various inputs. Just write down what each button represents and then you can teach each command one by one to your MX.

Sounds complicated but it's actually quite simple once you get the hang of it.

Not sure if anyone has a working HDMI code yet. The DVI code that I got to work was actually the HLN code so that should hopefully work.

I know this might sound like a dumb question, but what is discreet codes and whats the big deal about them?
