Mike - I definately like the idea about a forum devoted to the Marquee - this beast has so much information on modifications and updates in different places on this forum and in the archives, it is hard to know where to begin. Were you thinking of perhaps incorporating one into your Wisdom Technologies website? By the way, I wasn't planning on touching that section of the neckboards you're thinking about, nor was I going to touch the power suplies for now (other than what has already been done with the HVPS). Also, thanks for the insight regarding the AC coupling cap - your experience in this area is much appreciated.
Mark - I realize that Mike doesn't neccessarily answer / give opinions on everything he might have an idea about, I was I surpirsed that he hadn't said anything for a couple days, considering how fast he jumped in after Jaehong posted his findings. Honestly, I was wondering if marquee mods were a touchy subject with him considering he actively sells them here.
I'm glad that you've started this project. You have my support, and I'm even willing to contribute parts if needed to help the process. I'm all for improving the Marquee, I'm also looking to learn more from others here on the forum. I'm not an engineer, I'm just a troubleshooter. I kept my distance because I have to be careful to not disclose my proprietery mods. I'm willing to contribute, but you must understand that there are some things that I cannot discuss... However, there are still plenty that I can share, so count me in.
To start I think you should start a new thread, give it a name. Copy and paste what you've already started on this one to the new one. We'll keep the "maintenance" thread as it is, and the new thread will be a second thread that deals specifically with improving (redesign/mods) the Marquee. I have new stuff to add to the maintenance thread, as well as to the new thread. You'll have to step up and be the captain of the new thread, we'll help you keep it on track. That way we'll keep the new thread as focused as possible. I'll later link both from my website. You've presented some excellent ideas, two of them really have my attention.
I just came back from a visit to Mark's house. I took my JVC DVHS deck and MP-5 transcoder with me to his house. I wanted to see what the final circuit looked like on Mark's 9500/MP. We had the HD sat box (VGA/RGBHV)on input 2, and the transcoder on input 1 of the Marquee. I setup the remote to select inputs from a touch of a button. The HDsat input was Pure HDnet Hi-def. the Transcoder input was U571 D-VHS.
I wanted to use U571 because it would be the best test to show how well the transcoder performed on dark scenes, as well as the transcoders gamma performance. The green neck board on the projector had a slight bloom that would not go away, and will need replacement, so it would not allow a true black level test.
In comparison The MP-5 produced a sharper and clearer image. The colors jumped off the screen, so much that Mark thought the colors were too bright. The gamma was perfect. The image had punch and detail even in the dark scenes in the sub.
The HDsat box produced a somewhat flat image, colors were dull, detail and punch was lacking. The pure HD image should have easily outperformed the MP-5 showing a dark film like U571.
We'll return in two weeks with upgraded neck boards, and we'll do the same comparison over, but we'll be comparing the MP-5 to a different HDsat box, and I'll even bring my HDsat box. Hopefully Mark will have replaced his sat box by then.
