Salt Lake City, UT - HDTV - Page 6

For those of you using Titan TV to schedule your recordings beware (or I guess that you already know) that Titan TV has been listing the local Salt Lake City UHF UPN channel 24 programming under the KSL-DT banner.

I caught on very quickly when the Jerry Springer program was listed under KSL and I thought "what the hell!".

Right after the LDS Conference and Yellowstone HDTV broadcasts KSL will broadcast " teenage transvestite hookers with big boobs..." (!) Just kidding.

Yeah, I just about had a heart attack when I saw Enterprise HD. I wonder what's going on there. Anyway, is the WB now officially broadcasting in HD? Gilmore Girls looked to be HD to me. Have they been in HD for a while now and I just missed the announcemnt? Either way, my anticipation for the upcoming season of Smallville just went through the roof.
Hey, Gilmore Girls does look like it's HD. And it looks like they're only broadcasting two USDTV subchannels now. I think they were doing 5 for a while. Now if we could only convince them to drop those last two....

Anyway, thanks KUWB!
Yes KUWB-DT is in HD, there were some troubles in the begining from transitioning from SD to HD, they were missing audio for a while but by 7:06 PM they had the problem resolved. I noticed Sunday morning that the USDTV bandwidth had dissappeared from the channel, so something was up. Gilmore Girls and One Tree Hill looked great once the audio was fixed and I can't wait for tonight to see two hours of HD Smallville.

Take a look at myfreehdtv dot org website.
I found One Tree Hill in HD last night on 30-1, plus the regular SD programs looked light years better.

I have a Friend that bought a home in cedar hills and he get HD no problem on OTA, I used to live in American Fork anf I also recieved HD no problem
post #157 of 3661
I see that one person has posted they use an SS (I assume Silver Sensor) antenna and another using a Radio Shack antenna. Does anybody recommend a particular antenna for an attic (I'm willing to go rooftop, but I'd prefer attic) for somebody living in West Jordan? I need both UHF and VHF as it will be feeding both an HDTV and some regular TVs...
Thanks Dave.............

I am glad to hear that HD should be available in Cedar Hills...

If your friend is available for me to chat with please drop me a PM.

Thanks again for the info Dave,

Steve

I'm at least one of the ones using a SilverSensor in the attic from Provo, and it works great for me. My only comment would be "the worst that can happen is it doesn't work, so try it." For $22 from amazon for the Gemini branded one (search for ZHDTV1), it's worth the risk IMHO.

My only warning is that it's really directional, so if at first you don't succeed in aiming correctly...

They converted thier microwave link between the studio and transmitter to a digital system and that helped thier analog transmitter as well. I have a OTA DTV set top box plus subscribe to Comcast HD service, I wonder if Comcast will be adding the HD WB since they are transmitting HD now?

Just caught part of the Smallville re-run on 30.1. Looked SWEET in HDTV. My kids and I can't wait for the new season!!

I am looking into getting a OTA HD tuner, but I don't know if Spanish Fork is too far to get a decent signal, all I really want is FOX, thanks for the help
post #163 of 3661
Well, it just so happens that I live in Spanish Fork and get perfect signal on all stations, including FOX. I have a large, 10-year-old, Radio Shack antenna (largest they sold at the time--I think it cost around $70-$75 then) mounted in my attic, pointed somewhere in the general direction of Farnsworth Peak. I threw it up there when we moved into the house years ago for standard OTA coverage and have never been back up to check on it since. When DTV hit a couple of years ago, I just plugged the antenna lead in the family room into my then new Sony SAT-HD200 and poof, there's HD just like like magic.

I know it may seem dopey on my part, but I just don't understand all the trouble others have with FOX. I'm located 54 miles from Farnsworth Peak and have never had a dropout on FOX (or any other station for that matter) caused by low signal strength as best I can remember.

Maybe I've just got great luck...

Yeah I live in Spanish Fork too, east up highway 6 near the golf course. Just using a wimpy Silver Sensor I get about 75 for Fox and about 85 for the rest of the major networks. It'd be nice(convenient) if SFCN carried HDTV since they have that great system already in place, but at least OTA seems to come in nice and solid just about everywhere in that neck of the woods.

Just got off the phone with Fox's engineering, 532-1300 option number 5. They said the splicer is up and operating properly and that football will be in 720p this weekend; even though ALL of last night's programming on 13-2 was in SD. They blamed the network feed.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I just bought an LG LST4200A based on all the rave reviews here...

kudos to wb for getting their hd up & running. smallville looked awesome last night. it was a nice surprise because i wasn't expecting hd from them for awhile, even though they got their equipment a while back. i guess all the attention has been focused on fox!
i'm still not getting the fox ota hd feed, & it's still in stereo! i'm gonna call again. i encourage others to do the same. good luck.

No HD and breakups from FOX too with a 40-45 signal strength. The problem lies in Terrain Eurastus.....at least i don't live in Riverdale - I hear things are worse.

FOX needs to bring their tower up to full strength - NOW

Michael.
I do live on the border of Riverdale and Washington Terrace and I was only able to get channel 13 after a neighbor topped a tree and even then I only get 20-30% with random breakups.

Crank up the power FOX!!!
I got word today that Comcast will not be and does not plan to be offering KUWB-HD at this time to their subscribers/customers. They did not provide any reason why they won't be providing Smallville, Gilmore Girls, The Mountain, One Tree Hill, Everwood, What I Like About You, Reba, Comando Nanny, Jack & Bobby and the broadcast premier of The Lord of The Rings in Dolby Digital 5.1 in November to their customers. Check out myfreehdtv.org for alternative reception issues.
Kudos to KUWB for jumping on the HD bandwagon. I watched "The Mountain" tonight and save CSI:NY (My new episodic HD fav) this is some seriously good HD pictures.

Good Job!

Michael.

PS - Booooo! on Comcast for not providing this to their customers.....
We had a bad PSIP computer this morning, until about 11:00 AM. If you were trying to change channels back to KSL-DT from another station, you may have had no luck.
BTW.......
One more week until "The History of Yellowstone".
Tape dub was made yesterday, from the editing system. Looks good .

Seems that more and more sports franchises are telecasting locally in HD. I wonder if the Jazz will ever get on board with this.
Looks like UPN is adding more and more HD programming to their prime time lineup. Anyone know if Salt Lake's UPN station plans to broadcast in HD?

I just called KPNZ, Channel 24 and asked them specifically when they planned to start broadcasting in HDTV. The answer surprised me. The gal that answered the phone said that broadcasting in HDTV is not presently on the stations list of things to do (doh! ... come again?). She said that it takes a broadcast license for the necessary channel and that there aren't any HDTV licenses currently available. Amazing reply!
She's right!

Since KPNX came on the air after the channels were handed out, they didn't get one. So, they have to make the switch from analog to digital on their existing channel, or scrounge around for another channel assignment, which is probably unlikely. Same goes for Channels 20 and 32, as well as low-power stations.

Our family viewed the HDTV Yellowstone program on KSL after Saturday afternoon conference. The videos were stunning and the scenery was great except... the MTV-like cuts every 2-3 seconds for 90% of the program were driving us crazy. You would just get an "oh, look at that" feeling and then zap, off to another scene, zap, off to another scene. I literally started counting "one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three... zap, cut to another scene... one thousand one etc.).

The narrator reading what was written on the screen, when we would rather be looking at a waterfall or buffalo while the reading was taking place was also distracting.

I am curious what kind of HDTV camera was used for the production because it is a good one. Some HDTV (that is not upconverted) just looks soft sometimes, but this camera produced razor sharp video. We use a DLP micromirror projector on a 95" diagonal screen in a darkened room.

Have to give the program a 3 on a scale of 5.
