Baker,

I am in Lehi (just north of Thanksgiving Point) and get all the digital channels just fine. With a decent antenna I don't think you should have much trouble.

Well I got my receiver hooked up.. I haven't purchased an antennae yet, but I remembered that I seemed to get some reception on the house coax, so I figured I'd hook that up to see if it worked.. I got 83% signal on every channel I found, so I don't think I'm going to bother with a different antennae.. this one's already in teh attic even =)

I'm fairly impressed with it so far.

Anyway is there a master list or a definitive list of the channels available? I just want to make sure I'm not missing any.

Thanks,
Jason

So. . . .

Why no "Saving Private Ryan" in HD on Thursday 11/11 on ABC?

Another local problem, huh?

Sigh

might be related to the fact that it was uncut & unedited. there's a thread about it in the hdtv programming section.

what was shown instead?
It was shown in SD.

Saving Private Ryan

I called Channel 4 once the show started to ask them to flip the switch to HD but they said that they have edited the program for language and will only be showing the edited SD version of it. They said the reason was to avoid fines from the current FCC regulations.

I don't understand this! The parent company ABC should know what the laws are and edit the movie at the top level and not leave it up to the individual stations to do this. If ABC would have done the edit in the first place than maybe we would be able to see it edited in HD.

can we get enterprise in HD here?

if so, what chan?
Nope, no ST:Enterprise in SLC.

As to Private Ryan, many stations didn't air it at all, many aired it unedited, and some edited it. (No idea as to actual numbers, just an impression from the articles I've read over the last few days.)

Yes, I would have liked to have seen it in HD too, but alas, no such luck...

HELP,

I can't seem to get the WB on HD. I've refreshed by channels and everything. Any ideas?

I get all other HD stations on the SLC feed with no problems. (2-1, 4-1, 5-2, 7-2, 13-2)

Thanks.

Questions: What kind of DTV Tuner do you have (make and model)? 2)what happens if you manually select 48 or 30-1 into your box? Do you get a blank screen? Does it say NO A/V or some other message? We changed some thing in our PSIP, when we went HD in September, to match the program stream parameters that the FCC is adopting in 2005 and have heard many complaints from certain brands of set-tops boxes. I'm trying to get some information put together to support this theory, so any feedback will help greatly appreciated.
My OTA DTV tuner is an old Samsung SIR-T151. Very basic, but it does the job. If I manually select 48, it says NO A/V, just like you said. Is there anything that I can do?

Thanks.

I'm going to check something on my set top box at home it is an SIR-T151 as well and before after I rescanned the channels it began working again when I had this problem. Let me check a couple of things this afternoon and I'll get back to you.

NASCAR on Sunday?
Sound problem with Men In Black?

What happened to the HD broadcast of on Sunday?

Race was being broadcast on channel 5 KSL in HD and DD 5.1 (which looked and sounded great) up until about a half hour to go in the race KSL cut to SD to show a ticker at the bottom of the screen but then they never switched back to HD.

Was there a technical problem or did someone forget to throw the switch?
I tired to phone the station but just got a machine (wish I had a direct toll-free number to get to the engineering dept. of all the local stations).

Is this switching from SD to HD done by computer or by humans? Why is there so many mistakes like "not throwing the switch"?

The sound on channel 5-2 for the broadcast of Men In Black was cutting in and out making that channel unwatchable. Is this a problem with the new sound board?

I realize that this HD broadcasting is relatively new technology and it has dramatically improved in the 1-1/2 years that I have been getting HD but there is still mistakes made on a regular basis. I am afraid to ask anyone over to the house to watch an HD program for fear that some type of glitch will happen and I will have to try to explain the problem to my friends.

I'm sorry if I sound like I am whining about this but I am just curious to know if anyone out there feels the same way. I have never watched more broadcast TV than I do now with all the current HD programs available. I guess what I would like to hear is that the local broadcasters are doing everything that they can to give top quality, error free broadcasts to the public on a regular basis.

Just my 2 cents.

I guess I'm going to have to add that disclaimer as well.

I'll change some wording so it doesn't look like I stole it from you.

On the NASCAR thing, looks like the Master Control Operator didn't switch back to the widescreen feed (NASCAR is only SD, but shot in widescreen, then upconverted by NBC) after the crawl. Most of the time, switching is automated, but some special (i.e.: not pre-scheduled/pre-timed) things have to be done manually.

Still working on the audio thing....looks like we still have an intermittent problem with metadata dropping out. I think "MIB" was in stereo. All of our tapes from last night showed 5.1 throughout, and were fine. So, somehow, the stereo metadata is fighting the surround metadata.

We had a couple of problems with the NBC-HD satellite receiver a few weeks ago, so we got a new one....looks like it fixed some, but not all, of the problems.

Yea bbart,
The switching at KTVX is computerized if the switch is programmed into the playlist.
KTVX MCOs sometimes forget to watch the HD feed and let it stay on network or stay on SD upconvert.
It would be cool to have a web enabled switch for a siren in Master Control.

We are trying a new "work-around" setup for our NBC-HD audio. Let's see if it helps the problem with the "toggling" between stereo and 5.1.

The number for Engineering is in the local phone book.....(801) 575-5960.
Give us a call if the sound goes bad. We can force the NBC playback back to stereo if it is acting up. (Let it ring...there may not be anyone really close by to answer immediately, at night.)

Hopefully, here is a prelim drawing of the new News Audio booth and console. The desk and ancilliary equipment aren't shown yet.

i didn't get any sound for the first part of "lost" the other day. there was no sound until after the 1st commercial break. then the sound came back, but the video was only sd. after a few more minutes the hd & dd5.1 finally came on. any idea what happened?
We were well aware of the lost audio on LOST. I just takes a few minutes to talk someone through reaquireing the audio. After the HD feed gets delayed an hour by the server, we send it to another box that decodes the MPEG2 and breaks out the audio and video. Every great once-in-a while this box looses the audio PID and doesn't reaquire it. Then we just have to turn the audio off and back on again on this decoder.

Can anyone in the Orem area get 13-2? I put a 6' antenna in my attic and I can get most channels. The channels I can't get is 13-2, 7-2, 30-1, or 14-1. I can get 2-1, 4-1, and 5-2 (although sometimes 4-1 has a weak signal).

I'm thinking about moving my antenna to my roof in order to get 13-2 and the other channels listed above. I know that 13-2 has a weak signal (is due to increase signal in March 05'), so I don't want to do this if I still can't get 13-2. So, if anyone in Orem can get 13, that would be good news to me.

Thanks,

BTW- I'm 34.7 miles away.

Wow, yeah, I'm glad to know that I'm one of only 1870 Utah residents that was able to get NBC back in July... (And I don't even live in Cache or Grand county.)

(For those like myself that were initially confused by George's comments, this will help:

Seinfeld in HD?

What happened to the broadcast of the Seinfeld special on Thursday that was supposed to be in HD? If there was a technical glitch why was the news in widescreen and the Late Show in HD immediately following that.

I wish I could get a waiver from KSL so I could get NBC from Direct TV!

FOX-13 signal loss?

Has anyone notice that the strength of channel 13 has been weaker lately. I have been able to get 13 at 20% signal strength with very few break-ups up until a few days ago and now the signal is near non-existent.

many people across the country didn't get it in hd for various reasons. my 1st thought when i saw that it wasn't in hd was that ksl edited the show for content for some reason. then i figured someone must not have flipped the switch because it was thanksgiving or something.

no noticeable drop in signal strength here in holladay for me. however, i do notice that the football broadcasts have frequent audio dropouts. yesterday during the cowboys/bears game, for example, the sound would skip every few seconds. on the other hand, the spider-man broadcast had no dropouts. the sound for the movie was pretty much perfect. so are the sound dropouts a local problem or a problem with the feed from fox? is there a fox engineer in the house?
NBC did not inform their affiliates' Master Control people, via APT (Affiliate Programming Tool), that it would be in HD. So, at least here, it was not recorded in HD for delayed playback.
Regarding the Seinfeld special, if it was a clip show, then it couldn't have been in HD since the original airings weren't.
HD wasn't even a glimmer in anyones mind yet.

I doubt it was originally shot on film either, so they couldn't have rounded up the original film and converted it.

I didn't see the show myself, but the only parts that could have been HD would have been the stuff that was shot recently, so there would have been a lot of flip-flopping back and forth from HD cast setups for the clips, then upconverted clips, then back, then forth, etcetera.
Not really worth even trying to have some in HD.

From the programming side of AVS is reporting that the clips WERE in HD. They were shot on film and edited in video and they had to remaster the original film and they used the remastered HD clips but DID NOT stretch the 4:3 out to 16:9 or 14:9 so the clips DID have black side bars. The interview segments were in 16:9 HD.

I defer to Ken English since NBC is his domain and I am not in even in Utah.
